IBM/crimson Hat - The Calculus Of The Cloud Stays The identical | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

1.0 government abstract

Getting perquisite to the aspect, I’m skeptical that the pink Hat (RHT) acquisition goes to subsist meaningful over the long-term for IBM’s (IBM) traffic or partake price. I worry that crimson Hat may finish up being IBM’s (greater precisely Ginni Rometty’s) “Compaq”, as in Hewlett-Packard’s (NYSE:HPE) questionable purchase of that enterprise years in the past.

The dispute that the “sum” of IBM + RedHat is more than the particular person components is not above sum robust for my part. i am struggling to reckon the exciting cost proposition provided with the aid of the combined corporations after reading the transcript of the analyst convention name that followed the announcement. certainly, the simple conception that the joint technology stacks in some course radically alternate the “calculus of the cloud” simply doesn’t accomplish sense to me. accordingly, whereas some analysts fill expressed matter over the $34 billion rate tag, my focal point here is exceptionally on IBM’s know-how arguments and market casual arguments used to warrant the buy.

As a disclosure, I happened to liquidate my closing position in IBM in October of this yr, as I begun shedding shares a short time after I wrote IBM – A Turning or Sinking Ship in 2017. I additionally worked for IBM years ago inside the systems administration division, long before the word “cloud” existed within the terminology of general guidance technology.

in the sections that observe, any referenced charges are pulled from the searching for Alpha transcript of IBM and red Hat’s analyst convention name which followed the acquisition announcement, unless in any other case mentioned. I’m additionally attaching the transcript to this document for comfort.

2.0 WHICH CLOUD IS IT

Ginni Rometty notes that “[IBM] might subsist the undisputed quantity [1] leader in hybrid-cloud….[with the acquisition of] purple Hat, the world’s leading provider of open-cloud answer[s] and the emerging chief in the platform for hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud.” Ms. Rometty, and different participants on the analyst name, expend “hybrid-cloud” and “multi-cloud” terminology a bit interchangeably; but, I contemplate some definition is constructive so as to add some precision to their analysis.

Wikipedia offers a nice, succinct definition of multi-cloud:

Multi-cloud is the expend of several cloud computing and storage functions in a unique heterogeneous structure.

We subsist vigilant that in a multi-cloud structure, the clouds will besides subsist public, inner most, or some aggregate of both.

And perquisite here is IBM’s definition of “hybrid-cloud”:

A hybrid cloud makes expend of a non-public cloud basis mixed with the strategic integration and expend of public cloud services.

So, a hybrid-cloud makes expend of at the least one private cloud, together with as a minimum one public cloud and consequently is rather characterised by means of a private-public architecture. they are able to then believe of a hybrid-cloud as a nature of a multi-cloud.

Multi-Cloud and Hybrid-Cloud Diagram

source: Yves Sukhu

This distinction is just a miniature famous due to the fact that IBM stresses its capability to particularly seize a great partake of the transforming into hybrid-cloud architecture market via red Hat’s technologies.

three.0 QUESTIONABLE ASSUMPTIONS

With their definitions in hand, let’s verify why IBM is doing this deal. personally, the motives expressed on the analyst name seethe perquisite down to an acquisition predicated upon three main assumptions:

  • collectively, there is a special synergy between IBM and crimson Hat’s know-how stacks such that the combination provides fabulous differentiation in the areas of hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud computing versus competing solutions from the likes of AWS (AMZN), Microsoft Azure (MSFT), Google Compute (GOOG), and so on.
  • Hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud computing options will (doubtless) coerce greater deal sizes and subsist greater profitable for IBM, with many enterprise customers simply dawn to stream the majority of their applications to heterogeneous cloud architectures.
  • The hybrid-cloud market is going to subsist expense $1 trillion.
  • certainly, any flaws in these assumptions would weaken the premise for the deal itself. Let’s verify each.

3.1 FIRST ASSUMPTION: whatever OPEN, anything pleasing?

Ginni Rometty presents traders perquisite here consumer requirement as a foundation for the marriage with red Hat:

“…The number 1 issue [customers are] asserting to us is, hiya, they – these other clouds, they’re proprietary. They want an open solution [with] no lock-in. So movement it across distinctive cloud environments and not using a lock-in, [that’s] what both of us conclude together…after which they say, it has obtained to address statistics security in a multi-cloud atmosphere and then give us a means to manage a multi-cloud atmosphere.”

There are just a few issues to unpack perquisite here. Ms. Rometty means that “other” clouds are proprietary and there is a client requirement for “an open answer”. I don’t exactly preserve in understanding what she’s getting at here. She implies in the quote that customers accumulate “locked in” with (definite) cloud environments; however, as an alternative, these shoppers wish to subsist capable of circulation their purposes with no anguish from cloud to cloud. i'm scratching my head because what Ms. Rometty’s “shoppers” are calling lock-in appears to subsist involving their application structure, and not the cloud ambiance they are operating on. A poorly designed cloud application can subsist difficult to stream no subsist counted what cloud it's working on. The talk is additionally real: a neatly-designed cloud application will subsist handy(ier) to circulate from one cloud to a different. I contemplate about many readers are generic with the concept and expertise of containers, equivalent to Docker. For readers that may subsist unfamiliar with the term, I present a simple if a bit imprecise clarification: containers supply a mode to materiel the entire “ingredients” that an software must run:

    Illustration of Container idea

    source: Docker/Datamation

As they behold within the illustration above, a container can “include” whatever an application must function. In a bit of an over-simplification, if they are looking to stream a containerized-utility from one cloud to one more, they simply “carry” the container up from its current cloud and drop the container on the fresh cloud. Readers who may besides no longer subsist commonplace with Docker and its container expertise might subsist interested to subsist vigilant that it began as, and is, an open-supply application challenge; the company additionally raised capital in late 2017 at a $1+ billion valuation.

So, expanding on the utility of containers:

“traditionally, functions or workloads frequently had to subsist rebuilt before they may subsist migrated to a different ambiance. The respond to this is container expertise. for the understanding that containers are isolated from neighboring containers and consist of every thing they requisite to flee the utility, you can with ease stream them to an extra [cloud] ambiance with out compatibility problems.”

    source: Kumina

As this Datamation article notes, “it changed into…the…clients [of cloud services] who demanded that this expertise exist within public clouds that drove the [container] innovations that now exist.” In other phrases, users wanted an easier option to kit and stream their purposes between clouds; and that in flip spurred the public cloud suppliers (AWS, Azure, Google, IBM, and so on.) to deliver container deployment elements and features.

One remaining point to accomplish about containers is that functions may additionally comprehend a few containers, through which case container orchestration software is used to automate and simplify the administration of sum these containers. Kubernetes, another open-supply chore at the dawn began at Google, is one of the universal orchestration methods (with Docker Swarm as an instance of a different).

Coming returned to Ms. Rometty’s aspect that purchasers don’t are looking to subsist “locked in” and in its situation requisite to subsist able to scurry purposes throughout dissimilar cloud environments, they (consumers) can definitely conclude this nowadays in the event that they design and deploy their purposes correctly, with containers for example of 1 expertise that may besides subsist reasonably advantageous. She, actually, makes this very aspect mentioning “…[We] fill been constructing and we've been very concentrated on hybrid and multi-cloud…in accordance with open applied sciences. So we’ve constructed on containers, Kubernetes…[and] multi-cloud supervisor became just introduced final week…” but, let’s subsist clear: the different fundamental cloud provider suppliers (e.g. Amazon, Microsoft, and so on.) besides present container and container orchestration capabilities. consequently, the IBM Cloud is not merely differentiated on this point; yet, with the pink Hat acquisition, IBM does gain pink Hat OpenShift which offers price-delivered performance constructed round Docker and Kubernetes. while there turned into no distinctive dialogue on the analyst call, perhaps IBM believes that its current container management and cloud administration functions could subsist augmented in such a means through OpenShift as to leapfrog the competition when using the “married” applied sciences for multi-cloud environments. but, if that’s genuine, why not principally talk in regards to the capabilities that the combined corporations may fill that will subsist advanced to others?

Frankly, it looks to me that IBM’s current cloud capabilities introduced to OpenShift don't appear to subsist going to subsist a great “game changer”. firstly, any integration between IBM’s cloud know-how stack and crimson Hat’s will accomplish the effort; time which rivals will certainly expend to their potential to accomplish confident they aren't left in the back of. 2nd, I’ve already cited that OpenShift is in line with Docker and Kubernetes which potential pink Hat’s value-add is constructed around the identical core used by means of many others; but, the competitors has and may proceed to strengthen equivalent cost-brought choices as well. Third, if there became some “killer” set of cloud functionalities that the combined stacks would generate, I’d like to reckon the companies would fill made that clear; but they fill not (as a minimum no longer yet). Fourth, there's nothing that “ties” OpenShift to the IBM Cloud; accept as factual with that pink Hat’s personal OpenShift deployment “offerings” page – which I captured almost immediately after the deal announcement – truly highlights AWS as a deployment platform:

    pink Hat OpenShift Deployment Tiers

    supply: pink Hat

Now, purple Hat besides offers OpenStack, in accordance with one more set of open-supply applied sciences, which can subsist used via companies to construct out their own deepest clouds and has synergy with Ansible, purple Hat’s language for DevOps. OpenStack hence helps IBM’s initiatives around hybrid-cloud deployments. however, as with OpenShift, I’m no longer completely convinced that inserting this solution below an IBM umbrella goes to result in a highly differentiated offering, nor to a unexpected acceleration of deepest cloud adoption among traffic shoppers. First off, IBM already had its personal respond stack in this area, IBM Cloud private. for the understanding that IBM expressed such bullish sentiment in regards to the hybrid-cloud market on the analyst name, I’m definitely a miniature stunned this specific solution offering was no longer outlined throughout the name. Assuming the hybrid-cloud belt is as “sizzling” as IBM suggests, one may are expecting that IBM private Cloud has been selling neatly; why not call consideration to the know-how then? here's perhaps a refined point and will subsist an incorrect extrapolation on my part, but it surely leads me to phenomenon if the hybrid-cloud market is as sturdy as IBM suggests it is, and will be. besides as the prior to now linked article notes, IBM isn't alone with an providing perquisite here, nor were they “first” to market with one. Microsoft added Azure Stack over a 12 months before IBM brought its competing solution to market. IBM might wrangle that Azure Stack, for instance, is proprietary whereas their open-source platform offers customers sum the liberty and benefits that open-supply options give. It’s a profitable argument, and it may well extra strongly aid Ms. Rometty’s comment that customers don’t want to subsist locked-in. in any case, with an open-supply-primarily based inner most cloud platform, a consumer can regulate and extend it as they need, which obviously isn't feasible to the same extent with a closed answer. it could fill been advantageous if IBM provided some information facets to fill in understanding if a vogue toward open-source exists within the hybrid-cloud market, and certainly for personal-cloud deployments. in the absence of particulars, i am left a miniature skeptical that red Hat OpenStack goes to materially alternate the “energy” of IBM’s hybrid (inner most/public) cloud providing.

If they tie sum of this again to Ms. Rometty’s quote initially of the part, it seems to accomplish stronger that customer comments round “an open [cloud] solution with no lock-in” peep a miniature invalid when given that the applied sciences (e.g. containers, orchestration) which fill already developed to deliver cloud users with the application portability that they need. The comment has superior validity when one considers the architectural chances of a private cloud inside a hybrid-cloud atmosphere; but, as I wrangle above, there looks to subsist a want of statistics which might imply purchasers lanky towards non-proprietary (e.g. open-source-based mostly) inner most cloud deployments.

To summarize, I don’t (presently) behold the ease really unique that emerges via a combination of the two agencies’ cloud stacks. To subsist fair, the agencies requisite time to strengthen tightly built-in solutions, and IBM is yet to celebrate the vigor of its structure corporation in opposition t purple Hat’s technologies. however, if I’m appropriate that “there is not a lot to peep here” in terms of the joint stacks, this insight would, of course, without detain undermine Ms. Rometty’s recommendation that both agencies will subsist a transparent leader, particularly in hybrid-cloud options.

three.2 2nd ASSUMPTION: customers are just GETTING sum started

Ms. Rometty mentions, greater than once, that they are getting into a 2nd piece of cloud adoption (“chapter 2” as she calls it). in the first part, purchasers moved their “easiest” workloads to the cloud with a cost-rate reductions hub of attention. These workloads represented the conventional Pareto-rule 20% of client purposes; and therefore, 80% of functions continue to subsist to subsist transitioned to the cloud. Ms. Rometty states:

“[Customers have] got to stream [these remaining 80% of applications]. They both ought to rewrite, refactor, select what goes the place, restful the records. These are inhibitors that cease them from going [to the cloud]. So here's only going to subsist accomplished this movement to the 80%, in case you can stream statistics and purposes throughout multiple cloud[s], accomplish that moveable…”

    She continues…

“however here is an inflection factor, and if [customers are] going to accumulate past that and circulation the other 80% which is ready sum their procedures and their statistics they want what we’re going to present together, this potent ambiance. And so this eighty% is…about…unlocking traffic price…the accustomed shoppers has a thousand utility[s] and the typical client already has 5…that they behold some as many as many as 16 clouds.”

the first comment, “[customers have] obtained to move…”, is worth debating. excellent judgment tells us that not sum purposes are necessarily a considerable sound for a cloud deployment for any variety of factors: required dependencies are not readily replicated in a cloud ambiance, protection considerations, want of charge-discounts, and so forth. So, valued clientele certainly should not fill to scurry the majority of their applications to a cloud structure. besides the fact that children, possibly Ms. Rometty is enjoying a miniature along with her words, and is maxim with by far of “dressing” that the trend toward cloud adoption will continue…which it evidently will.

but, I feel there is elbowroom to problem what she says within the next few statements. She explains that “[customers] both fill to rewrite, refactor, accomplish a conclusion what goes where…” certainly, IBM and different technology providers will, as they already have, subsist afforded with alternatives to wait on customers migrate certain functions to cloud environments. That’s first rate information for IBM’s very colossal provider enterprise, and there's rationale to reckon the capabilities group will improvement just a miniature from the red Hat purchase. These opportunities pretty much certainly develop in scope and earnings/profit competencies to the extent that these applications are migrated to enormously distributed models operating on (might be) heterogeneous cloud platforms (e.g. multi-cloud). So, I reckon Jim Kavanaugh, IBM’s CFO, as it should subsist pointed out that “[distributed cloud solutions] hastens their combine shift to bigger value...and is accretive to their low income margin…”

but, there's a counter-argument to trust here. instead of rewriting/refactoring latest legacy purposes, purchasers may additionally as an alternative select “off-the-shelf” solutions (SaaS or otherwise) which may additionally prove to subsist greater economical, modern, and less difficult to retain. for example, Salesforce.com (CRM) and Workday (WDAY) definitely didn’t achieve their market penetration as a result of clients opted to remodel any homegrown CRM and HR purposes respectively. regrettably, IBM doesn’t dispute the COTS approach and its skills impact on their projections for becoming their cloud related revenues.

relocating to IBM’s claim that multi-cloud environments may subsist extra Popular sooner or later, as per Ms. Rometty’s commentary that “the common client already has 5 [clouds]…”, there is a few facts to backup what the company is asserting here: a TechRepublic survey from 2017, as an example, referred to that the majority of businesses surveyed had already adopted a hybrid-cloud architecture. but, they understand that IT tends to circulation in cycles. reckon about what happened with the customer-server computing paradigm where “server sprawl” finally gave approach to server clarification and a propel for homogeneity amongst methods. Is it now not viable that they may besides behold anything equivalent with cloud, where shoppers “wake up” someday and expect themselves why they fill got 5 clouds once they may subsist in a position to office with 1? trust one of the leading standards for the Pentagon’s current $10 billion JEDI cloud venture: they're (for the second) insistent that the venture award and associated computing workloads will go/run on a unique cloud. As readers can besides understand, IBM is one of the bidders on the project and formalized their objection to the executive Accountability workplace (GAO) for the requirement of a homogenous cloud atmosphere. Assuming the Pentagon receives its approach and is a hit with its deployment, if the arm of defense (DOD) can operate on a unique cloud, then why does a given traffic requisite upwards of 16 clouds (using the “intense” illustration from IBM’s quote)?

The overarching theme here is that Ms. Rometty’s situation that the “remaining” eighty% of legacy customer functions are only ready to subsist moved into a multi-cloud environment has decrepit elements. in spite of the fact that it had been strong, I’m no longer certain IBM necessary to spend $34 billion on crimson Hat to tangle these alternatives. I already argued within the outdated piece that IBM had present capabilities within the same cloud expertise areas the situation crimson Hat operates. If they reckon about Ms. Rometty’s remark about “rewriting/refactoring”, what does red Hat present here that IBM doesn't fill already got? here is travail that sits squarely in the belt of IBM’s services neighborhood; a group that could “plug in” red Hat’s expertise, or another cloud technology, where it makes sense in response to client requirements.

however, the red Hat acquisition apart, if it seems that multi-cloud architectures finally “reduce” to less complicated, unique cloud environments which deliver enough robustness and reliability to meet most client requirements, then this “cloud explanation” could fill a melodramatic impact on IBM’s properly-line and bottom-line boom forecasts considering the enterprise is tying each metrics specifically to its possibility with “excessive-cost” multi-cloud options.

3.3 THIRD ASSUMPTION: IS $1 TRILLION FOR HYBRID-CLOUD useful?

Ms. Rometty asserts that the marketplace for hybrid-clouds will grow to over $1 trillion. She states:

“And to lead in the 2nd chapter, here's going to subsist about hybrid-cloud. In hybrid-cloud is an rising $1 trillion market…I insinuate what they did was emerge and they behold a scale of a $1 trillion market…We pointed out to ourselves and at sum times saved asserting: What conclude they conclude more suitable to address the wants of their clients? How can they accelerate up their capability to proceed after that? And knowing and there’s definitely a crucial factor, realizing that Linux is the quickest starting to subsist platform obtainable. And this simply this year, it became the number one platform both on-prem and in the cloud.”

all through the analyst name, there changed into no point out of precisely when the market for hybrid cloud is anticipated to attain $1 trillion in cost, nor the CAGR for this specific facet of the typical cloud market. I struggled to discover first rate information in support of IBM’s projection here, although Market research Media presents a forecast of $1 trillion for the whole cloud market through 2024. apparently, the Market analysis Media file synopsis highlights the rapidly turning out to be/high precedence technology segments inside the cloud market, but multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud are not outlined in that context. this article, which become referenced in piece three.1, prices IBM in 2017 as asserting “they call businesses to spend greater than $50 billion a year worldwide starting [in 2017] to foster deepest clouds, with the boom fee hitting 15 to 20 percent a 12 months via 2020.” the expend of these figures as a proxy for the ordinary hybrid-cloud market, it might without doubt Take reasonably some time to attain $1 trillion in complete cost even on the lofty wait of the growth range.

One aspect technology leaders emerge to subsist particularly decent at is arising with very gigantic numbers when describing their complete addressable market (TAM). Admittedly, I’m no longer bound if IBM’s evaluate is simple here or now not due to the fact…who really knows perquisite now how great the hybrid-cloud market could become? In usher of IBM’s forecast, the previously outlined article notes that “prior [in 2017], IDC analysts launched a survey that indicated that just about 80 p.c of colossal groups with 1,000 or extra personnel fill already got a hybrid cloud mode in area. additionally, 51.4 percent are using each public and personal cloud infrastructures, and 29.2 percent are expecting to conclude the equal in the next 12 months.” These metrics are constructive to usher IBM’s argument, but they may besides subsist interpreted to insinuate that the majority tremendous shoppers already fill a hybrid-cloud in region, and consequently fresh hybrid-cloud deployments may truly lower relocating forward. additional, if they preserve in understanding the discussion in piece 3.2 around purchasers deciding upon COTS/SaaS purposes, as well as the opportunity that unique cloud architectures may in the wait set up themselves because the predominant mannequin, then it’s viable that a $1 trillion hybrid-cloud market may no longer materialize.

    4.0 CONCLUSION

“Whoa” was supposedly Steve Ballmer’s (former Microsoft CEO) reaction upon hearing about the IBM-red Hat deal. perhaps that unique word most profitable describes the latest sentiment of many others.

The main thrust of what I’ve presented in this article is that i'm nonetheless struggling to endure in understanding what key applied sciences IBM gets with purple Hat that they didn’t fill already got, and why they felt they vital to spend 1/three of their market cap on a company that is just producing a pair of hundred million in cloud respond income (youngsters their expand expense is excessive). still, the “math” doesn’t add up for me, although possibly it is going to in time as IBM and crimson Hat better intricate their entertaining expense proposition.

Readers might besides rightfully factor out that I’ve ignored the potentialities for red Hat Linux and their middleware stack below IBM in my evaluation. In esteem to the latter, I reckon IBM’s possession of crimson Hat’s middleware stack is probably going to create some confusion, as a minimum in the short term. IBM and pink Hat will certainly ought to design out the course to position WebSphere versus JBoss. And as other authors fill cautioned, purple Hat traffic Linux (RHEL) may ultimately supplant AIX as IBM’s de facto UNIX distribution. The connected migration travail would possibly drive a excellent quantity of expertise and usher features. Ms. Rometty mentioned in one of the previously outlined costs that Linux is the fastest turning out to subsist operating materiel in the cloud and on-premise. but, celebrate that she didn't status that RHEL is the fastest starting to subsist Linux distribution. To that end, there is some information suggesting that Ubuntu is starting to subsist faster within the enterprise Linux phase. with out extra records from IBM and pink Hat, it’s really by far challenging to quantify the impress of purple Hat’s Linux and JBoss product units to IBM over the lengthy-term.

As outlined, I are expecting that IBM and pink Hat will give improved readability on the strategic price-add of the 2 corporations as they stream into 2019, and the course they intend to combine their stacks to greater compete towards the likes of AWS, Microsoft, and Google. i hope they do; because obviously traders will dispatch the stock lower (than it already is) if most rotate into satisfied the sum of the agencies lacks incremental price. Yet, at the same time as IBM/pink Hat give additional details to the market, as I’ve outlined herein there are a number of counter-arguments which undermine the assumptions that this deal is predicated upon. in my view, the calculus of the cloud stays the identical in the meanwhile.

These enhancements comprehend IBM FlashCopy SE -- a brand fresh licensed characteristic that allows for customers to accomplish a space productive photograph replica of their statistics. statistics copies are an famous piece of facts protection and testing solutions. With FlashCopy SE handiest the means this is necessary to shop records updates is used. this can dwindle charges with the aid of drastically cutting back the disk skill essential for the copy, consequently permitting purchasers to expend fewer drives, ingest less power, and subsist greater energy efficient while maintaining their statistics. one other fresh DS8000 turbo enhancement is Dynamic volume expansion, which can aid consumers maintain data availability and simplify storage administrator workload by enabling less complicated, on-line, quantity expansion to assist application facts increase.

resourceful fresh know-how additional extends the well-established DS8000 world-type efficiency with capabilities similar to Storage Pool Striping, which enables shoppers to velocity statistics entry and processing through lofty performance statistics placement -- without the requisite for special evaluation and tuning by means of a storage performance professional. additionally a piece of this fresh liberate is Adaptive Multi-circulation Pre-fetching (AMP) -- a leap forward caching know-how that can permit up to double the throughput and dramatically reduced processing time for tasks comparable to records backup, batch processing, company intelligence and streaming media. The remaining factor of modern enhancements is IBM z/OS global mirror multiple Reader, which offers a several optimization for IBM system z clients to enhance throughput for far flung mirroring.

IBM scores another Lab Win With 'Sierra' going surfing At Lawrence Livermore country wide Labs | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

With its Power9 know-how, IBM has been on a roll in the HPC segment. We’ve been protecting these efforts noticeably at Moor Insights & strategy, from IBM’s partnership with Google and the department of energy to Power9 powering the acme supercomputer . Now IBM has announced an extra lab announcement with “ Sierra ,” a joint supercomputer mission with the U.S. arm of energy’s countrywide Nuclear protection Administration (NNSA) and the Lawrence Livermore countrywide Lab (LLNL). Let’s Take a more in-depth appear.

    The details

Sierra is being hailed because the sister gadget to the IBM POWER9-primarily based “Summit,” and it replaces the obsolete “Sequoia” supercomputer (which best uses CPUs). Sierra is at present ranked because the third-quickest supercomputer on the earth, and it become announced terminal week that the gadget is now operational and within the remaining checking out before “acceptance.” Acceptance is a term used through the U.S. executive asserting to IBM “you delivered what they asked and paid for.” it will serve the NNSA’s three nuclear security laboratories, which, moreover LLNL, comprehend Sandia countrywide Laboratories and Los Alamos national Laboratory.

IBM says this desktop is about 1 million instances extra potent than a high-conclusion computer and built from the floor up (like Summit) for medium HPC and future AI functions. Its footprint spans 7,000 rectangular ft, and it's made up of 4,320 nodes on 240 computing racks. each node of the supercomputer includes two IBM POWER9 CPUs and four NVIDIA V100 GPUs, making Sierra the NNSA’s first giant-scale creation heterogenous system. It claims an stunning top performance of 125 PetaFLOPS, or a hundred twenty five quadrillion floating-element operations per 2nd. This puts it leaps and bounds ahead of Sequoia’s efficiency—probably 6-10 instances greater efficient should you factor in its real AI efficiency.

moreover, Sierra is backed by 154 petabytes of IBM Spectrum Scale storage, spread across 24 racks of Elastic Storage Servers. in response to LLNL, the gadget offers 1.54 terabytes per second (in both study and write bandwidth) efficiency and is in a position to managing an spectacular 100 billion data per each file equipment. The Spectrum Scale enables the device to answer scaling calls for.

LLNL partnered intently with IBM and NVIDIA not only on the hardware however the utility stack and helped optimize the heterogeneous equipment’s efficiency through prep travail on purposes and constructing optimized code. LLNL has besides purportedly been working intently with the alrightRidge country wide Laboratory, where the acme supercomputer is housed, which makes feel and joyful to peep as the funds sum comes from U.S. taxpayers.

    functions

Sierra might subsist effect to expend towards countrywide protection—NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship program, ongoing life extension courses, weapons science, and nuclear deterrence. sum here is code for performing nuclear and nuclear protection simulations, removing the deserve to test nuclear bombs in the core of the barren region or underground. It’s vital to celebrate that that Sierra will even subsist effect to expend for different scientific research benefitting society. The LLNL says Sierra could subsist utilized in tasks such as melanoma drug analysis, precision medicine, seismology, climate, astrophysics, substances science, and extra.  This makes superb suffer as Sierra is the third fastest supercomputer in the world involving classic HPC efficiency.

    Why this matters

I root IBM for no longer abandoning its country’s defense in its time of want like different know-how organizations have. I locate it ironic that Google, who merits from the freedoms the U.S. defense coerce has provided it, is stepping far from supporting their nation’s protection and its residents.

All in all, here is an additional sturdy HPC operational win for IBM’s POWER9. I even fill referred to as the POWER9 architecture the “Swiss army knife” of acceleration and because it is the most excellent compute acceleration platform with wait on for five alternative ways to accelerate, even in a reminiscence coherent manner. For some functions, coherency is faultfinding because it makes the accelerator (GPU, FPGA, ASIC, etc) an equal citizen for reminiscence entry, which simplifies application structure and minimizes latency. This may noiseless imply faster efficiency and sooner app time-to-market.

Financially, here's a win, too.  together, the deal IBM prick with the DOE changed into value over $300 million—a bunch that IBM says contributed to IBM’s Cognitive methods 17% Q3 salary boom this yr.

in addition to the financials, it’s besides simply first rate optics for its POWER9-based commercial enterprise line. IBM is employing this equal AI-optimized architecture in Sierra in its traffic product line, the usage of the IBM AC 922 POWER9-primarily based server family unit. What traffic wouldn’t wish to status they accomplish expend of the technology behind two of the most powerful supercomputers on the earth to clear up their company complications?

I've got a full inbox of mail that piled up during my miniature territory trip to the West Coast terminal week, and a full screen of questions about IMAP e-mail, Verizon Wireless EV-DO Internet access and the Mozilla Firefox Web browser. Let's accumulate to it....

    _______________________

    Laurel, Md.: Hi Rob -

Anticipating the question of 'when and where can I accumulate Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess (Ev-DO) service?' I present the following:

Verizon Wireless is on target to expand their BroadbandAccess network to cover one-third of their network - approximately 75 million Americans - by the wait of 2004. Today at CTIA they announced multi-million dollar agreements with Lucent and Nortel for wireless infrastructure technology for BroadbandAccess over the next two years.

BroadbandAccess will subsist available to traffic and individual customers in many major U.S. cities later this year, with additional markets phased in through 2005.

We fill not yet announced any further deployment info.

Rob Pegoraro: I contemplate I know just who in Verizon Wireless PR sent this... the post helpfully addresses a topic that Verizon had yet to clarify when I wrote that column.

BTW, "CTIA" is a major wireless-telecom trade show in Atlanta this week; peep for some coverage by the Post's Yuki Noguchi of developments at this gathering in the next few days.

    _______________________

Falls Church, Va.: lofty accelerate woes over here. DSL isn't available. Cheapest seems to subsist Cox Cable at $55 bucks a month -- it's not really cheaper if you add their basic service. Satellite service seems to subsist higher. Is there any solution that can drop broadband down to $40, or conclude I fill to wait until Verizon gets here with its service?

Rob Pegoraro: You should check around with the other DSL providers they list in their annual survey of Internet providers. I *hope* that some of them can hook you up. Because if they can't, that is a shameful indictment of the landline telecom business. Falls Church is a dense, close-in belt that should fill had universal DSL access years ago, going by everything that I've heard from folks at landline telecom companies.

Chestertown, Md.: So, suppose I switch to Firefox 8.0. Since I'm now using Netscape 7.02 for both browsing and Email, would I continue to expend it just for email? Seems kinda silly to preserve the great program on the computer just for email. Is there some course to trim away the unneeded piece of Netscape?

I conclude recall that Mozilla was besides working on an email application as a companion to what is now Firefox, but I don't recall the name.

Is there some email program (not Microsoft) that I could expend and one to which I could easily transfer alot of mail settings, addresses and files emails?

    Thanks

    stugodwin-friend.ly.net

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, you could preserve Netscape just as an e-mail client. There is a mail-only Mozilla program called Thunderbird as well; I've been using it for the past few months. It's showing some excellent progress of its own--but it's besides in a much rougher status than Firefox, at a 0.5 version instead of 0.8. You requisite to subsist prepared to conclude a lot more debugging and tinkering to accumulate it to travail right. (I've switched to it mainly because my travail accounts are sum IMAP, and T-bird does provide pretty excellent IMAP support.)

    _______________________

Columbus, Ohio: No question, just a vast thank you for suggesting I try out Mozilla Firefox. It works well. I never experienced an effort to hack into my laptop (52.0 Kb dial-in) with MS Explorer but believe an ounce of protection, etc.

I esteem the wait on and ideas you offer. gladden preserve it up.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks. I'll conclude my best!

Washington, D.C. Asks About I-Tunes, Wintel: Rob -- my daughter wants to buy an iPod -actually, the pink mini]. I am a Mac guy since 1984 -128k ruled!;], but a cataclysm technically.

My daughter's mom has a two-yr.-old Dell running Windows 98 -not 98SE]. It has USB, but not USB 2. It has no Firewire. The Apple website offers a Belkin Firewire card for PC.

    My questions:

    (1) Is installing the card difficult for a goof like me who knows nothing about the PC world, and (2) will iTunes/iPod travail in Windows 98, without upgrading to XP -one Apple Spec sheet said 98SE okay, another just listed 2000 or XP].

    Thanks for any help!;

Rob Pegoraro: Installing the card may subsist tricky, and installing iTunes will subsist impossible--it's Win 2000/XP only. You might subsist able to expend a third-party iPod program like ephPod or Xplay, but then you're getting deeper into the traffic of tinkering.

Wait, how could a two-year-old Dell fill been shipped with Win 98 instead of XP? Something here doesn't accomplish sense.

    _______________________

Yuma, Ariz.: Can you expose me how to find out why Microsoft Internet EXplorer keeps blocking my submission of a credit card number on the ground that "THE CARD NUMBER IS INVALID"? Is there some course to over-ride this block?

Rob Pegoraro: Uh-oh. That's not a feature that exists at sum in IE by itself. If your credit card is not, in fact, invalid, you requisite to check--carefully and quickly--to accomplish confident you don't fill some spyware running on your computer.

(Can they accumulate a link to my column on that, pls.?)

Another possibility: You've got some child-protection software that's been poorly configured and is coughing up incorrect/confusing oversight messages in an attempt to obviate what it thinks is a kid uploading mom and dad's credit-card number.

    Any other guesses?

    _______________________

Madison, Wisc.: A tech. columnist on the Chicago Tribune gave counsel on how to expend the computer avoiding starting up sum the hidden startup programs that absorb so much memory . His counsel was to flee msconfig the ease of The counsel I lost. Any ideas on how to cleanly out the clutter

Rob Pegoraro: "MSConfig"--a petite utility buried deep in the Start Menu, which is simplest to find by choosing "Run..." off the Start Menu and typing "msconfig"--lets you adjust a lot of hidden system parameters, including what runs at boot time. Click its "Startup" tab and you can desist certain programs from running then.

The vast problem, though, is that at least half of these apps will subsist identified only by eight-character filenames, which you'll fill to peep up via Google to accumulate any clue as to what they do. It's now been almost 10 years since Win 95 supposedly banished DOS 8.3 filenames in favor of human-readable names; how much longer are they reputed to decipher the signification of filenames like "systray" or "rnaapp" or whatever?

    _______________________

Lititz, Pa.: Dear Rob: I may subsist changing my ISP and want to set my email up for IMAP. The ISP I am considering will accept Outlook Express and other programs. i am not set up for Outlook Express. What conclude you insinuate I conclude prior to switching ISP's? Should i transmute my current email to Outlook? I want a smooth transition so I can export my address book and email log. Thanks

Rob Pegoraro: Don't even expect the ISP what mail programs they support; provided you're capable of typing in a server address into a preferences screen, the term "support" means *nothing" except "we provide specific setup counsel for this application."

The entire point of protocols like POP and IMAP is that they allow a lot of different programs to interoperate. Unless you expend AOL or MSN or some other ISP that doesn't expend these criterion protocols, don't ever let your ISP expose you what mail program to use.

    _______________________

Denver: How conclude I expend or set up tab browsing in firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: Hit Ctrl-T to open a fresh tab, then drag a link onto that tab to view that page there. You can besides open links in fresh tabs by right-clicking and selecting "Open Link in fresh Tab," or--this is really neat--by selecting the link by pushing down on the scroll wheel of any mouse with a built-in wheel between the buttons.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: How did you find your suffer with Verizon 1X service levels on the broadband cards ?

Rob Pegoraro: Much slower, of course--but noiseless pretty usable for simpler tasks like e-mail or reading mostly-text Web sites. I was pretty impressed to behold that Verizon's network could hand off my connection from EV-DO to 1xRTT without a drop.

    _______________________

Asheville, N.C.: Your column left out a problem with Firefox: It can't find the cookies placed on the HDD by IE that subscription sites fill planted so you don't fill to nature in your password or that identify you automatically. It can't find any of the other IE placed cookies of other sites, either. My start page from Excite isn't create by Firefox, nor are any of my TV schedule pages from other websites. Bummer!

Also . . . When I power down my 390X IBM laptop, running 98SE, I accumulate a window that says something is noiseless running. How can I find out what it is? I can't defrag as that utility besides says that something is running, but neither window identifies the program.

Thanks for any wait on you may provide!

    Tim

Rob Pegoraro: Correct, the 0.8 version of Firefox only imports IE bookmarks. However, a complete settings-import option has been added to the more recent "nightly builds," the daily updates that more daredevil folks are welcome to try. (I'm holding off on that myself; having made the switch from IE to Ffox, I don't requisite this added function). It should subsist in a .9 release soon enough, maybe next month.

What's the name of this app that won't quit at shutdown? The message you behold ought to report that. If it doesn't, hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the chore Manager, which should list it by name.

    _______________________

Millheim, Pa.: I'm having a problem with getting amplified sound from my speakers. Sound is faint and not affected by muting or raising/lowering volume. I've checked my connections, troubleshooting, even rolled back drivers. Can find no conflicts anywhere. Even substituted other speakers. The terminal thing I recollect doing is burning a pair CDs (which turned out okay) and then a few days later just happened to notice I couldn't hear anything. It took a while to notice the problem because I don't preserve the volume up when working at night. Any ideas?

Rob Pegoraro: Hmm. Hmm. conclude headphones travail alright? You're confident that the speakers are noiseless plugged into a wall outlet that itself has not been switched off? Seems like you've already done sum the perquisite trouble-shooting steps that I'd try... this one's a real head-scratcher. Any suggestions?

    _______________________

Alexandria, Va.: terminal chat, I think, I was the guy who switched to Firefox because after installing MS Office XP, my IE had freaked out. Saw someone later give an easy fix for my problem.

Was having a problem with Outlook, had to start it in safe mode...what conclude you know, dang MESSenger starts up in my systray. This is my real problem with MS...ever time you upgrade, etc, they proceed and blow out sum your settings. It's like browser hijacking or spam...only in this case, you've actually WANT what's being offered (up to a point).

I've disabled half of the MS "clone" programs (i. e., Messenger vs. AOL IM), yet it's like the Godfather III....they preserve draggin me back in. I guess my point is, until more corps. design out that they are CUSTOMERS, not MINIONS, it seems that they are destined to accumulate second-rate products with second-rate service. I guess that's more of a rant than a point, but I feel better now.

    Bob

Rob Pegoraro: Rants are welcome here anytime. And this one raises a useful point--who's the real customer of sum the stuff they accumulate on their computers? Quite often, it's not us. Many parts of Windows Media Player, for example, are designed for the profit of record labels and movie studios, not individual users.

    _______________________

Stouffville, Ont.: I currently expend a HP officejet v40 'all-in-one' machine for faxing/printing/copying & scanning. It is a sheet fed machine and is by far limited in use. I am considering a flat bed scanner to scan photos and documents. Can you recommend a machine that incorporates excellent document storage software?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope, because that's not something I've tried to conclude myself (my own scanning travail at home is limited enough to subsist served well by a miniature HP combo printer-scanner). Any suggestions for Stouffville?

    _______________________

Centreville, Va.: Is it viable that spam filtering rules on my Mail client could subsist shared by other Macs and my .Mac webmail?

Rob Pegoraro: It's possible, yes, and seems a fairly obvious thing to conclude as well. But Apple hasn't updated the software to provide that option.

    _______________________

    Charlotte, N.C.: Cleaning out the clutter: My Dell kept crashing from want of memory, so I finally had to call tech support when AOL wouldn't run. I went back and forth between AOL and Dell, but the bottom line was Dell tech support had me uncheck everything on startup in msconfig and then read me the list of things to check. I made a written copy of it and preserve it proximate at hand. The only thing I've added back is the firewall...It's working okay now!;

Rob Pegoraro: Can you partake that list of "safe" apps? I contemplate a lot of folks here would esteem it.

    _______________________

Vienna, Va.: Just a word of warning for those using IMAP. My wife was doing this in order to read her email at travail and at home, just as you recommended. But recently, their provider had a catastrophic RAID failure that they could not regain from, so sum that email saved on their server was lost! Most bigger providers should fill ways of recovering from this, but ours did not (yes, they will subsist taking their accounts elsewhere). Luckily, I had set up the account to cache sum the emails to their local hard drive, but this setting was not the default, so if I hadn't been careful, she really wound fill lost everything...

Rob Pegoraro: That is a risk with IMAP. But I contemplate the risk is far higher of individual users suffering data loss from computing malfunctions--most of the providers I talked to celebrated that they conclude backups every night, unlike nearly sum home users (myself included).

    _______________________

Pueblo, Colo.: For a Mac devotee using Netscape and Safari, is there any understanding to not try Mozilla's Firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: No--it should certainly replace Netscape quite handily. The Firefox-vs.-Safari debate is harder to settle. I really wish the two apps would finish borrowing each other's features: Safari needs Ffox's more comprehensive integrated searching and find-as-you-type, while Firefox needs Safari's forms auto-fill option and "open links from external applications in fresh tabs" option.

Falls Church DSL Woes follow-up: Tried Covad and Verizon. Neither offered it. Something about copper wires, Verizon said, I think. It's really pretty uncomfortable that of sum the bragging they do, the landline companies don't fill DSL available in every DC-area home. Is there really a contrast in accelerate between DSL and cable, appreciably, anyway?

Rob Pegoraro: The problem would subsist if you *don't* fill copper wires leading to your home, not if you do, but odds are whatever sales droids you talked to accumulate their scripts scrambled.

Cable modem services are usually faster in absolute numbers--but it's not a contrast you're likely to notice much, since either service is more than quick enough for any real-time stuff (i.e., Web browsing and audio or video streaming).

MS Messenger always starts??? - Help: Running XP Pro, notice that MS Messenger is always starting up. I fill checked my startup folder it is not there. I try to exit, it says something like "You fill a program running that requires this to subsist open (IE/Outlook etc)" even though I DON'T fill THEM OPEN.

HELP! How can I disable this from starting up every morning?

Rob Pegoraro: Fire up Messenger, select Options off its Tools menu, and uncheck sum the "run at startup" options.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: Rob - I just took the plunge and got a Powerbook (a 15" with a superdrive). So far, so good! I haven't hooked up the airport basestation yet, but phenomenon about security. I understand it comes with a firewall so my files should subsist safe, but can my neighbors borrow bandwidth from me by connecting? I'm fresh at this... Thanks!

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, if you leave the AirPort base station running in a wide-open mode, your neighbors could start borrowing your bandwidth. Your Internet expend would besides subsist simple for anybody to eavesdrop on. But turning on encryption to secure the connection demands about two clicks, and you should subsist automatically prompted to conclude this when you set up the base station.

    _______________________

Homewood, Ill.: Alas, I won't subsist able to subsist at your session in real time...hope you post it.

I esteem the excellent things that you status bout FireFox. sum True.

But Opera has most of it, and a whole bunch of features that FireFox hasn't gotten to (yet?), such as

    1. aliasing favorites

    2. mouse gestures and mouse buttons for forward and back (no requisite to recur to the top of the screen)

    3. the competence to strip out fancy backgrounds and nature so you can actually read that light nature on black background monstrosities that some web designer thought was "cool". (I'm old. Sometimes my eyes don't pick up fancy too well; there are lots of us.)

just to name three that I don't want to give up.

Yes...there are some sites that don't render properly with Opera...(just as they don't with Netscape...haven't tested mozilla) so I wouldn't toss away IE.

Rob Pegoraro: Sorry, not a fan of Opera--not with that mess of an interface. I mean, four different "reload" commands?

(Note to sum Opera fans: I know that 7.5 is reputed to cleanly up things. But until that version gets shipped, the browser noiseless presents one of the worst UIs I've seen in a Web browser... with the viable exception of the one mentioned in the next posting.)

    _______________________

    You were right, I was wrong - DC: But only kinda perquisite and kinda wrong!;

I posted terminal week about how considerable IE was and you blasted it, so I looked into the alternative browsers like Firefox.

I worship tabbed browsing!; But Firefox renders things differently from IE, and let's kisser it, the web is optimized for IE. Plus Firefox can subsist needlessly intricate and confusing.

So -- and I am NOT a paid spokesposter here -- I create a freeware tabbed browser that sits on top of IE, but adds many advanced browsing features that Mozilla has.

    In other words, IE does the rendering, but this "skin" (called Avant Browser) does the rest. And though it's crashed a pair times since I've installed it, it's a heck of a lot less than IE and IT DOESN'T CRASH WINDOWS!;!;

It's noiseless in beta, and it's not perfect, but the imperfections are shallow and infrequently encountered, and I contemplate they're updated fairly regularly anyway.

    (Channeling Scarlett O'Hara): With Gates as my witness, I'll never expend IE again!;

Rob Pegoraro: same problem: AvantBrowser (and CrazyBrowser and myIE 2) besides suffer from developers who apparently couldn't status no to any option. Just peep at the stacked toolbars in the screen shot that graces its home page (www.avantbrowser.com). Sorry, but editing is just as famous in software evolution as it is for my own sorry prose.

Washington, D.C.: Adding to your list, Starpower (erols, rcn et al) doesn't 'do' IMAP.

In re: Spam blocking, Starpower along with Verizon are doing a high-level 'spam blocking' that is really bad. I flee a listserve for my kids' school here in DC (Lafayette, the one that had the fire terminal week), and almost sum of those with Starpower and Verizon domain names are NOT getting their mail from their listserve. It's random, though, as some are getting it and others aren't. Tech support at both places hasn't been able to help, so we're sort-of stuck.

While I really conclude root ISP's attempts to emanate the tide of spam, these evident wide sweeping solutions don't necessarily work.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks for the report. I'm besides hearing of problems with occasional issues sending mail to/from AOL, for much the same reason. These false-positives emerge to accumulate fixed after a few days or maybe a week. If that sounds like your experience, gladden accumulate in palpate (rob at twp.com).

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: Resolution to My Mom's E-Mac failure.

The problem, as it happened, was not the well-publicized Rastar shift one, but rather one I was told by the service folks is just as common -- an intermittent or failed logic board. These service people fill seen lots of these boards fail within 6 months of coming out of the box.

So sum is well with 80 yr obsolete Mom's e-Mac, although I noiseless believe Apple's response was terrible. The service guys said that they accumulate miniature information -from- Apple. They fill to regularly proceed to a specially designated Apple website to behold what's new.

Rob Pegoraro: This is an update to something posted two weeks ago. I'm joyous to behold that things finally got fixed--but annoyed to hear that it took so long. Replacing a logic board is almost a default repair in these kinds of situations, and it should fill been done almost overnight.

    _______________________

High Point, N.C.: There are some alternatives to downloading and using the Messenging Programs from Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft, which usually are much more friendly in how they want to start up etc.

My personal suggestion is Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net but perquisite now there are problems with yahoo's fresh authentication scheme, so it doesn't travail considerable for that. it is under energetic evolution and has some very chilly features that the other clients then picked up.

Rob Pegoraro: I've tried Gaim myself. To the issues that lofty Point noted, I'd add that it looks and feels like the Linux port that it is--the UI has a lot of rough edges and just looks frightful in general once you accumulate past the first screen.

    _______________________

    Washington, D.C.: Rob,

I want to accumulate a web page up - just something where I can post photos and provocative links. I fill no concept where to start. Any recommendations for a novice?

Rob Pegoraro: Start with your ISP, which probably offers some Web space for free. Another option is using Yahoo, which definitely does.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: I just got an Ipod and noticed that unless my computer is connected to the internet when I try to rip songs from a CD I don't accumulate the song names and CD title. Isn't this information coded on the CD somewhere?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope--iTunes, just like other music programs, looks up this data automatically by matching the CD's pattern of track times to an online database. That's why blend CDs you've done yourself aren't recognized in this way.

    _______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Just a word about auto-fill. I'm not crazy about having the browser provide that service (may subsist the result of MS paranoia). For just a pair of bucks Robo-form gives me more autofill capability than I would ever requisite and, unless, they're REALLY tricky, leaves it sum under my control.

Rob Pegoraro: Agreed. That's why I like how Safari handles it (which, in turn, is based on the feature Microsoft added to the Mac version of IE about 5 years ago, but which was never included in IE for Windows): Unless you click the auto-fill button, nothing gets pasted into forms for you.

Otherwise, when you start typing into fields with titles that match the auto-fill database (name, address, phone number, e-mail, etc.), Safari will present to fill in that info, but you can override it by continuing to nature something else.

    _______________________

Speakers: This may appear too obvious but I fill two volume controls -- the knob on the external speakers and then the control w/in the software. Maybe their friend above needs to check both of those.

Rob Pegoraro: Sounds obvious, but I can attest from personal suffer that it's often the obvious stuff that intricate these esoteric malfunctions.

San Jose, Calif.: Thank you for your timely article on IMAP vs. POP. As a professional IT person I fill a question about one line in your article:

Microsoft's Outlook and Qualcomm's Eudora suffer from strangely slipshod IMAP support.

Could you subsist more specific on how "sloppy" Outlook is with IMAP? I accumulate a lot of questions from home users about personal email programs and would like to know benevolent of problems might crop up.

Rob Pegoraro: The principal form of sloppiness is that Outlook doesn't delete messages properly--they noiseless emerge in a message list, but in a strikethrough, grayed-out font. They don't fade until you select "Purge Deleted Messages" from one of the menus.

Technically, this is an accurate portrayal of what happens on the server, but it suggests to the user that they haven't deleted things "right." The better course is to scurry the deleted messages to a Trash folder, where they don't accumulate in the course but can noiseless subsist inspected before you vacant the trash.

Comox, B.C. Canada: This may subsist a mute question, but when using Google, what is the contrast between using "Google Search" and "I'm emotion lucky"?

    Thanks!; Marg

Rob Pegoraro: I was just in your neck of the woods terminal week (my trip wasn't sum work, OK? :)... a regular Google search returns a list of sites that Google thinks matches your query. An "I'm emotion lucky" search takes you directly to the site that Google thinks is most relevant, without the wait to behold a page of search results.

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, some monetary institutions play that game, although I haven't foster across that issue myself in my own almost IE-free browsing. Which ones are at frailty in your case?

If you want to allow pop-ups from specific sites, sum you requisite to conclude is provide the domain name of the site that launches the pop-ups, not the address of each pop-up.

Rob Pegoraro: I contemplate Millheim has already done this, but in case he/she hasn't, here you are.

Re: Stacked toolbars in Avant: Unpaid spokesposter again...

Yeah, I create the abundant toolbars a miniature daunting at first, but again, it's in beta, plus you can customize them out of existence.

Right now I've got a compact setup with only the features I expend regularly. The ease I conclude with keystrokes or that considerable invention, mouse gestures. (It besides helps that I fill an IntelliMouse with those extra buttons. Really helps.)

Rob Pegoraro: Ooh, these are the two worst excuses in software development.

"It's in beta": Bzzt, wrong answer! A beta version is reputed to subsist feature-complete, which means you should fill the interface finished by then--that way, the beta testers can focus on finding bugs instead of fixing features. Simplicity isn't something you can airbrush on in the terminal months of development; it has to start early on.

"You can customize...": Wrong again! Most users never palpate the defaults. The default interface should subsist the one appropriate for sum users; the geekier stuff can safely subsist left off, since the geekier users will know to peep for it in the options/settings/preferences windows.

I don't know what happened. I didn't delete anything. Nothing in Recycle Bin. My kids swear they didn't delete anything (take with a grain a salt on that).

I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Sun Java. No difference.

Can you give me a clue as to what happened and how to accumulate this off at start up.

    thanks.

Rob Pegoraro: Until I got halfway down your message, I was going to status "reinstall the Sun software." Now I'm thinking you might want to reinstall Firefox itself (especially if the Sun Java machine works fine in IE... visit http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp to accomplish confident it's running properly.)

If I did and I had that same problem, I'd expect the Wachovia folks why their site is so far behind the competition; American Express's site, for example, works perfectly in non-IE browsers.

Looking at the Windows chore Manager the System Idle Process shows considerably more CPU usage (40-60%) than the evident unused CPU cycles (100%-CPU usage). CPU usage typically shows ~ 80%. Is there a known problem with the XP chore Manager causing me to worry about a non-problem, am I misinterpreting chore Manager, or should I subsist looking elsewhere?

I will subsist interested in trying the Firefox Browser and other third party s/w, but only when I fill more assurance in my current configuration. Thanks for any feedback.

Rob Pegoraro: Not confident what might subsist the issue. System Idle Process on this Windows 2000 machine can easily flee that high, but it does drop down when other apps are in use. How much memory conclude you fill on your Dell? If you've got less than 512 megs, then you (as somebody who uses the computer intensively enough to know how to read the processes list in the chore Manager) don't fill enough.

Silver Spring, Md.: Re Google "Feeling Lucky." For a excellent chuckle expend this option for "weapons of mass destruction."

Rob Pegoraro: Or "miserable failure." It's a sort of sport called Google bombing--get enough people to expend the same phrase to link to a page, and Google will associate that phrase with the page in question, even if it never appears in the page itself.

Burlington: Rob, I recommend the HP PSC 2210 (probably succeeded by the 2410) to Stouffville. At $249 (if I recall correctly ... purchased terminal May), it does a reasonable job printing, scanning, copying, and faxing; the software has a Windows Explorer-like look/feel and does a reasonable job, although one could probably purchase something better.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks. How is it for document storage software? That was the primary concern up in Ontario, as I recall.

Falls Church, Va: I noiseless accumulate a pair of those virus e mails a week....someone who has my address in their book is infected. I NEVER open attachments from folks I don't know, I delete anything the least bit fishy. I celebrated in yesterday's paper the article about e mail viruses said they can noiseless conclude some nasty travail after deleted (even if unopened)..is this correct? Should I vacant my trashcan after each deleted suspicious e mail? I expend Outlook Express. Thanks Rob. Tina

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, that's a excellent concept in general (to redeem disk space if nothing else).

Bethesda, Md.: A fresh low. My Earthlink account is getting spam in Chinese.

Rob Pegoraro: That's nothing. I've been spammed in Chinese for years, along with various other Asian languages and (for some reason) Hebrew. This weekend, I got spammed in what I contemplate was Finnish, for some reason.

Poughkeepsie, NY: Rob: at your suggestion, I installed Firefox this weekend, and I really like it a lot. However, I find the Google search box on the upper perquisite of the frame to subsist awfully small. conclude you know of any course to adjust its size? I've tried everything and looked through sum the wait on screens and online FAQs and can't find anything.....

Rob Pegoraro: I'm pretty confident that's fixed, although there's probably an extension you can download to adjust it: http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/

Washington, D.C.: Hi Rob -- I'd like to try out the Post's fresh RSS feeds, but I'm having a hard time sifting through the readers. After reading reviews at CNET and such, it looks like the sum of the readers for Windows fill some pretty unattractive features/requirements (e.g., require .NET, are add-ons to IE, are hard to setup). fill you create a nice, free RSS client, or even a not-so-free client that's worth the registration fee?

washingtonpost.com: Read the Post's recent review of RSS readers, and check out washingtonpost.com's RSS feeds page.

Rob Pegoraro: I agree; I went through a lot of different RSS clients before settling on SharpReader myself. I decided that the .Net framework requirement was acceptable, that it ran rapidly enough on my computers, and that once I copied its folder over the C:\Program Files\, I wouldn't fill to contemplate about its want of an installer.

Still, it's missing a few features that I esteem sum the time in NetNewsWire Lite on the Mac, like being able to behold its list of current headlines by clicking on its Dock icon, then label them sum as read from that same icon.

Does the iPod lose sum its data during the process? Any technical hazards to worry about? Etc. many thanks.

Rob Pegoraro: I contemplate I can respond most of the questions perquisite here... namely, since sum the data is stored on a hard drive, not flash memory, you shouldn't lose any of it (although syncing it up before sending it out for any service is just a excellent idea, period) and that there are no technical hazards unique to a battery replacement (as in, the tech doing the service could drop a soldering iron by mistake, but that could befall anytime you've got the case cracked open).

I'm not confident there would subsist much to review--or much to review unless they did this a *lot* of times.

Is this evidence of a massive automated databasing effort by corporate America gone awry? Should I subsist alarmed? How can I find out more about how corporations amass this information and protecting my privacy?

Rob Pegoraro: excellent question, Jim Owens of 1201 Wilkes St.

Sorry, couldn't resist that :) There are a lot of provocative databases to match people against, and that's probably what's going on here. sum you requisite is the perquisite benevolent of magic number, like a credit card, to tie different databases together. I'd recommend visiting sites like epic.org--that is, the Electronic Privacy Information Center--to read up on this.

Arlington, Va.: People preserve talking about "backing up" your files and I know the reason. What I don't know is: which files conclude you back up? Specifically which extensions conclude you requisite to protect? Thanks

Rob Pegoraro: I find it's easier to contemplate in terms of file locations, not extensions. Assuming you actually conclude redeem sum your travail to My Documents or a sub-folder of that--which you should do, or you'll never subsist able to find the things again--you can safely concentrate on backing up that folder, along with your browser bookmarks (it's simplest to expend your browser's "export" command to dump a copy of them into My Documents).

McLean, Va. : You rhapsodize about Firebird--What are the downside impacts of installing version .8 and then uninstalling it? I might like to try it out, but I would hesitate to derange my computer configuration if this beta release will not conclude a graceful uninstall.

Rob Pegoraro: not a bit that I'm vigilant of, and I've tried this with earlier, rougher versions. Firefox doesn't fill any complicated hooks into the system, as IE does, so it's simple to install and uninstall (you'll notice, for instance, that there's no restart required).

    Washington, D.C.: Hi Rob,

I just bought a fresh computer (used quite a few of your columns to wait on customize it). obsolete computer is a Windows 98 2nd ed, with Outlook Express. fresh computer is XP Home - don't know what email program it comes with but I'm guessing Outlook Express (both are Dell if it matters).

Is there any course (easy or hard) to Take the emails off my obsolete computer and migrate them over to the fresh one? The terminal time I tried this(just saving the folders and loading them on the fresh one) it was an utter failure, but I had no concept what I was doing. Am I (hopefully) missing the obvious answer?

    Thanks for your help!

Rob Pegoraro: If you're not confident what mail program you're using, then it almost always is Outlook Express, the default in Windows. expend the File menu's export command to copy out your mailboxes and other settings, scurry those exported files to the fresh computer, then expend OE's import command (also in the File menu) to draw in the exported data.

Now I can just proceed to my bookmark folder, hit "open in tabs", and sum of my favorite comics load in one window. It's the coolest browser evolution in YEARS.

a fad!? a legitimate device to bring the online community together!? ... gradual consolidation into a wee handful (instead of the dozens) !?

Would it subsist a worthy experiment for these networks to create a generic identity schema for a one-registration fits sum cartel!? I'm sick of managing multiple profiles! :-)

My answer: It sum looks like the same benevolent of fads that swept the Web in '99. Once again, they fill a lot of different sites, sum essentially offering the same thing. Once again, I find myself puzzled by the "you gotta try this" e-mails I accumulate from people on one site or another. Gimme a break! Limitations

    Processors

A p5-570 system can fill from one to four system drawers. Each drawer has two processor slots. A system with one drawer may fill one or two processor cards installed. A system with two, three, or four drawers must fill two processor cards in each drawer. When two or more processor cards are installed, sum cards must fill the same processor frequency. Each processor card has two processors and eight memory DIMM slots. The DIMM slots are different for DDR1 and DDR2 memory. sum processor cards must support the same memory technology, either DDR1 or DDR2.Systems configured with 1.5 GHz processors fill a maximum of eight processors and two drawers. All processor cards require one Processor Power Regulator. A second Processor Power Regulator provides redundant power support. Three power regulators in one drawer provides a redundant power regulator at the drawer level.Processor feature numbers 7832 and 7833 require the expend of redundant Processor Power Regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768. One processor card requires the expend of two regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768 per drawer. Two processor cards require the expend of three regulator feature numbers 7875 or 7768 per drawer.Processor feature number 8338 requires the expend of redundant Processor Power Regulator feature number 7768. One processor card requires the expend of two regulator feature numbers 7768 per drawer. Two processor cards require the expend of three regulator feature numbers 7768 per drawer.

    Memory

The 9117-570 must accommodate a minimum of 2 GB of system memory. memory is expandable up to a maximum of 512 GB with DDR1 DIMMs, or a maximum of 256 GB or 512 GB (processor dependent) with DDR2 DIMMs.Memory is installed in groups of four DIMMs mounted on the processor cards. Each processor card has eight DIMM slots.DDR1 memory is supported on 1.5 GHz processor cards (#7834), 1.65 GHz processor cards (#7830), and 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7832). DDR2 memory is supported on 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7833), 1.9 GHz processor cards (#7782), and 2.2 GHz processor card (#8338). sum DIMMs in a p5-570 system must expend the same memory technology, either DDR1 or DDR2.Memory feature number 4498 (32 GB DDR2) can only subsist used with processor feature number 8338 (2.2 GHz). Feature number 4498 cannot subsist mixed with other memory features on the same processor card. The presence of memory feature number 4498 in a CEC Drawer will reduce the frequency of sum memory in the system to 400 MHz.Each processor card must fill at least 2 GB of memory installed. Each processor card must fill at least four memory DIMMS installed. It is recommended that each processor card fill an equal amount of memory installed. Balancing memory across the installed processor cards allows memory accesses in a coordinated parallel manner.Memory feature numbers 4492, 4494, and 7049 can subsist mixed on the same processor card. No other memory features can subsist installed on the same processor card with feature numbers 4492, 4494, and 7049.The presence of memory feature numbers 4492, 4494, or 7049 in a CEC drawer will reduce the frequency of sum memory in the system to 200 MHz.Plans for future memory upgrades should subsist taken into account to wait on obtain optimal performance without limiting future memory expansion.
