Spanish open hardware phone platform manufacturer Geeksphone, which created the first developer preview devices for Mozilla’s Firefox OS (aka Peak and Keon), has announced it’s now taking pre-orders for a unique beefed up consumer version of its Peak smartphone that it’s called Peak+.
Geeksphone’s original two developer-focused devices sold out a few hours after going on sale — doubtless helped by their low prices of $194 and $119 respectively. The Peak+ looks likely to garner similar levels of demand, thanks to a similarly low pre-order price, although there is now more competition for Firefox devices — with Telefonica selling the ZTE Open in Spain (and elsewhere) for as little as €69/$90. (Albeit, the more expensive Peak+ does tender beefier, mid-range specs vs the very budget ZTE Open.)
Geeksphone has created a pre-sale reservation list for consumers wanting to buy the device for a “one-time, limited promotional price” of €149/$196 (excluding taxes) — after which it will exist sold at a “standard price” via the startup’s online store, from September. Geeksphone would not substantiate exactly how much the phone will ultimately retail for, saying only it would exist “slightly higher”.
On paper, the Peak+ is a slightly beefier version of the original Peak, with double (1GB) the RAM and the latest version of the Firefox OS (v1.1). Other specs are the selfsame as the original Peak, including its dual-core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm 8225 chipset, 4.3” qHD IPS multitouch screen, 8-megapixel rear camera (with flash), 2 megapixel front camera, and tri-band UMTS / HSPA, plus a 1800 mAh battery. But Geeksphone says it has improved battery management and graphical performance.
It too says it has “enhanced” the external materials and inner construction for “a more polished finish and pleasant touch, as demanded by their users”. Storage wise, the Peak+ has 4GB of internal storage which can exist expanded up to 32 GB via MicroSD. It will too reach with 25GB of cloud storage (from Fiabee).
Geeksphone said the vast majority (93%) of buyers of its earlier developer devices came from outside its home country. require was apparently especially tall in Germany, France and Japan. Several other Asian and Latin American countries were too said to exist very keen on the devices.
Mozilla’s Firefox OS is aiming to provide an open alternative to Google’s Android OS, especially at the budget to mid-tier smartphone handset price range, and has signed up considerable carrier support for the initiative. This contrasts to Canonical’s tall halt approach, with its circa $600 Ubuntu Edge smartphone — currently seeking $32 million in crowdfunding backing to build an open source-based smartphone that can double as a PC.
Update: A Mozilla spokesperson has been in palpate requesting a “correction” that the Peak+ is not a Firefox OS phone, but rather is “based on Boot to Gecko technology” — aka Mozilla’s original codename for the Firefox OS Linux-based open source software project.
“We want to clarify that this unique phone that was announced is based on Boot to Gecko technology with pre-release software, but is not a certified or supported Firefox OS device,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
This is basically an issue of brand control. It’s worth noting that Mozilla has been criticised by others in the open software movement for the lengths it goes to to preserve its branding. And Firefox OS is a key unique brand for Mozilla, which it’s clearly keen to protect and control.
As to why Geeksphone’s Peak+ does not own Firefox OS branding, TechCrunch understands the Firefox OS branding scheme is currently only available to carrier-backed devices. We’ve reached out to Mozilla for clarification on what mobile makers own to consequence to achieve Firefox OS certification/branding and will update this post with any response.

The storage market leader added data protection and mobility features to unity Operating Environment (OE) 4.4 and capacity and performance improvements to SC progression Operating System (SCOS) 7.3.
Dell's $60 billion-plus acquisition of EMC in 2016 left the combined vendor's unique enterprise IT division with multiple Dell EMC midrange storage platforms. Dell EMC has resisted phasing out either of its two main midrange systems, the EMC unity and Dell SC (Compellent) brands, despite calls from industry experts to consolidate its product lineup.
Both Dell EMC midrange storage product lines are sold as all-flash or hybrid arrays. The unity line integrates obstruct and file support on a unique array. It was launched in 2016 to supersede VNX and VNXe midrange appliances. SC arrays provide a lower-cost midrange alternative. Dell EMC is winding down support for its midrange P progression storage arrays, formerly known as Dell EqualLogic.
In the near term, SC and unity will hasten separate operating software, although Dell EMC has hinted at plans to consolidate them on a unique management platform. Foreshadowing workable consolidation is an HTML 5 management interface and remote management added to SCOS, mirroring a similar user interface in unity OE versions.
"Product transitions dote this don't occur overnight," said Sean Kinney, a Dell EMC senior director of product marketing. "There may exist a next-generation platform at some point in the future, but it will exist a nondisruptive migration path for every unique of them."
The latest unity and SC upgrades are nondisruptive to customers, Kinney said, acceptation the systems will remain available during the upgrades.
Dell EMC's two main midrange systems targeted different sets of customers, said Eric Burgener, a research vice president for storage at IT analyst firm IDC.
"The SC progression is based around the traditional dual controller, scale-up array design, while unity is more of a web-scale design. Both products are competitive with other midmarket offerings in terms of performance, scalability, functionality and price, but the web-scale design is probably the future," allowing for more storage functionality to reside in software, Burgener said.
"The SC progression is for folks that want better value for the money and prefer the SCOS operating environment. This is needful because a lot of companies own to travel through an extensive requalification effort to certify a unique platform," Burgener said.
A unique node of the SC progression can exist more powerful than a unique node of Unity, he added, "but you can scale unity more easily by just adding more unity nodes. unity is more about data mobility from heterogeneous storage arrays and better integration with the data hub ecosystem of platforms."
Keeping both midrange appliances ensures Dell EMC retains the large SC installed base, while gradually merging the two OSes, Burgener said.
"There were more changes in the management GUI with this latest release that consequence just that -- the two GUIs examine more alike," he added. "And both platforms now support the CloudIQ cloud-based management dashboard, which wasn't on SC before."
Unity bolsters data migration, replication and security
Dell EMC claims shipments of unity own exceeded 1 EB of raw sparkle capacity since the product launched in 2016.
"We're seeing continued quarter-on-quarter adoption of flash, as [an increasing] percentage of their total storage capacity shipped with unity and SC. As the economics of sparkle reach more in line with traditional spinning disk, more and more customers are saying, 'Hey, I'm going to travel with all-flash,'" Kinney said.

Data protection in unity OE 4.4 includes MetroSync array-based asynchronous and synchronous replication for transactional file applications. The feature is in addition to Unity's existing block-based replication. MetroSync enables disaster recovery across long distances, using data aggregation and distribution to accelerate data recovery objectives.
Dell EMC enhanced its SAN Copy data mobility technology to let customers migrate their storage to unity from other vendors' obstruct arrays. The addition of two-way Network Data Management Protocol helps to boost NAS backup by eliminating the exigency to travel through the network to reach backup servers.
Kinney said performance enhancements for Microsoft embrace vigorous Directory and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol to boost searchability and security.
SC Series: Dell EMC midrange storage for 'price-sensitive' customers
SCOS 7.3 is based on re-engineered code that Dell EMC claims doubles the maximum IOPS of each SC array. The latest software boosts SC array performance by at least 100,000 IOPS on mixed workloads, Kinney said.
The SCOS update extends data-in-place upgrades to SC4020, which uses TLC NAND SSDs. The feature allows customers to migrate to newer SC array models.
Support for 25 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet iSCSI has been made touchstone on SC arrays. Distributed economical on SC arrays can enlarge I/O efficiency and accelerate RAID rebuilds, Dell EMC said.
According to a report in June by analyst firm IDC, Dell EMC midrange storage increased its market share by four percentage points over second-place Hewlett Packard Enterprise in the first quarter of 2018. IDC estimated Dell EMC's first-quarter overall storage systems revenue at more than $2 billion.
Dell EMC executives said the quarter that ended in March saw its first storage market share gains since the 2016 merger. Midrange storage sales were cited as a sore spot in previous quarters.
