In the 1990s and well into the 2000s, if you had mission-critical applications that required zero downtime, resiliency, failover and elevated performance, but didn’t want a mainframe, Unix was your go-to solution.
If your database, ERP, HR, payroll, accounting, and other line-of-business apps weren’t rush on a mainframe, chances are they ran on Unix systems from four dominant vendors: Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM and SGI. Each had its own flavor of Unix and its own custom RISC processor. Servers running an x86 chip were at best used for file and print or maybe low-end departmental servers.
Today it’s a x86 and Linux world, with some Windows Server presence. Virtually every supercomputer on the Top 500 list runs some flavor of Linux and an x86 processor. SGI is long gone. Sun lived on for a while through Oracle, but in 2018 Oracle finally gave up. HP Enterprise only ships a few Unix servers a year, primarily as upgrades to existing customers with worn systems. Only IBM is noiseless in the game, delivering novel systems and advances in its AIX operating system.
We aren’t going to dwell on how they got here. Instead, this is a inspect at where commercial Unix is going, and how and when it will eventually die. Unix's slack decline
Unix’s decline is “more of an artifact of the want of marketing appeal than it is the want of any presence,” says Joshua Greenbaum, principal analyst with Enterprise Applications Consulting. “No one markets Unix any more, it’s benign of a deceased term. It’s noiseless around, it’s just not built around anyone’s strategy for high-end innovation. There is no future, and it’s not because there’s anything innately wrong with it, it’s just that anything innovative is going to the cloud.”
“The UNIX market is in inexorable decline,” says Daniel Bowers, research director for infrastructure and operations at Gartner. “Only 1 in 85 servers deployed this year uses Solaris, HP-UX, or AIX. Most applications on Unix that can be easily ported to Linux or Windows believe actually already been moved.”
Most of what remains on Unix today are customized, mission-critical workloads in fields such as pecuniary services and healthcare. Because those apps are expensive and risky to migrate or rewrite, Bowers expects a long-tail decline in Unix that might final 20 years. “As a viable operating system, it’s got at least 10 years because there’s this long tail. Even 20 years from now, people will noiseless want to rush it,” he says.
Gartner tracks the decline of novel Unix sales.
Gartner doesn’t track install base, just novel sales, and the trend is down. In Q1 of 2014, Unix sales totaled $1.6 billion. By Q1 of 2018, sales were at $593 million. In terms of units, Unix sales are low, but they are almost always in the profile of high-end, heavily decked-out servers that are much larger than your typical two-socket x86 server.
IBM the final UNIX man standing
It’s remarkable how tight-lipped people are over the condition of Unix. Oracle and HPE declined to comment, as did several IBM customers. IBM is noiseless in the game, but Bowers notes, “I remark IBM investing $34 billion in Red Hat, but I don’t remark IBM investing $34 billion in AIX.”
Steve Sibley, vice president of cognitive systems offerings at IBM, acknowledges the obvious but says IBM will noiseless believe a substantial number of clients on AIX in ten years, with the majority of clients being great Fortune 500 clients. “Because 20% is the larger enterprise systems, it is a very sizable segment. In healthcare, many stable tier 1 production environments continue to invest and fancy the stability and security of AIX. Established and embedded ERP systems conclude likewise at perfect layers,” McNelly says.
Many novel applications pursue Linux, which
IBM, which arguably has the largest remaining sizable iron server traffic in the world, is one step closer to making systems based on its own Power processors peers to the Xeon-based machinery that utterly dominates its IBM Cloud public cloud. With the latest moves, IBM now has scale-out and scale-up systems based on a coalesce of its Power8 and Power9 processors available for rent, but these systems are only for the moment running its own AIX variant of Unix and its own IBM i proprietary operating system.
It would not buy more than a few minutes to load up Linux partitions on the machinery IBM is starting to rollout in several of its datacenters. So don’t mediate for a minute that IBM is not going to eventually add champion for Linux on this public Power infrastructure that it is rolling out. To be honest, it is a bit of a sensation that it is not happening concurrent with the rollout of AIX and IBM i on the cloud.
IBM has been providing hosting and outsourcing services for rent for six decades now, so it is a bit much to convene it a newcomer to selling cloudy infrastructure. The company has dabbled with selling capacity with utility pricing before. bethink the total Supercomputing On-Demand exertion back in January 2003? IBM sold off its System x X86-based server traffic to Lenovo a year later for $2.3 billion, so there was no judgement to paddle SoftLayer, now known as the IBM Cloud over to System x gear. And the Lenovo cash paid back most of the SoftLayer bill. IBM invested another $1.2 billion in SoftLayer privilege after the deal was done, and had hoped to build out 40 cloudy datacenters, with hundreds of thousands of machines and millions of virtual machines. They conclude not know if IBM met these goals, and it doesn’t talk about them anymore in this way.
It took a surprisingly long time for IBM to glean Power-based machines on its public cloud, and it is pellucid in hindsight that sizable Blue was waiting until its Power8 servers were fully ramped and it came up with a more cogent Linux strategy on Power Systems machines to really propel Power architectures from the SoftLayer cloud, which it launched in May 2016. The four bare metal instances that debuted then based on its Power Systems LC machines are noiseless available today, based on the identical single-socket “Habanero” system created by Tyan, with slightly different prices and with the identical configurations that were available nearly three years ago. These Power Systems LC machines champion Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Canonical Ubuntu Server operating systems and the PowerKVM hypervisor, but only Ubuntu Server was available on the cloudy versions on what is now known as the IBM Cloud. The Power instances are available in IBM Cloud datacenters in San Jose, Dallas, Washington DC, Sao Paulo, London, and Sydney.
IBM has not, as yet, offered cloudy instances of machines running AIX and IBM i, and it has similarly not offered bigger iron – both of which it sorely needed to conclude to actually present potential customers the identical class of machines on the cloud as they believe used in their datacenters.
With today’s launch, IBM is getting a bit closer, but it is a petite disconcerting that IBM Cloud is only offering SAP HANA in-memory databases atop Linux for running S/4 HANA applications on four-socket and eight-socket “Haswell” Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800 servers. IBM’s enterprise-class Power E950 and Power E980 machines, which consume Power9 processors and which scale to four or sixteen sockets, respectively, can rush circles around this worn Haswell iron. IBM’s Global Technology Services does plenty of outsourcing deals on such iron for running SAP HANA, which is a huge driver of the Power Systems traffic these days, but that is not the identical thing as having apt utility pricing. (We will glean into SAP HANA on Power in a part article, because IBM has some unique advantages that it is leveraging well here, and it is taking on Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the mantle in this enterprise arena.) IBM does contrivance to present SAP HANA on the novel Power cloud instances, so that implies that IBM is going to champion Linux underneath it. And that moreover implies that it can champion Linux – and they posit Red Hat Enterprise Linux, considering that IBM is spending $34 billion to acquire Red Hat – on these Power slices on the IBM Cloud.
IBM is chopping up two different types of Power machines on the most recent public cloud, and they are far more useful than the single-socket machines that came out three years ago. The reminiscence and storage on this cloudy Power E880 scales the identical as on the Power S922, with 8 GB to 64 GB per core for reminiscence and up to 2 TB of disk and/or glisten storage scalable in 10 GB increments.
Both types of Power Systems on the IBM Cloud are back-ended by capacity on IBM’s Storwize V7000 disk arrays, which link to the servers over Fibre Channel links. IBM installs the PowerVM hypervisor and either AIX or IBM i (and presumably Linux in the case of SAP HANA) and then customers maintain everything from the operating system and on up from there while IBM manages from the firmware on down.
Here is the set of features that IBM is rolling out for these Power instances:
IBM has been beta testing this cloudy Power infrastructure in its Washington DC data heart since the middle of January. By March, IBM will believe machines up and running in its Dallas datacenter as well and it will allow production workloads to discharge consume of them. Somewhere in the second quarter it will roll out Power System slices in its Frankfurt datacenter in Germany, with other geographies to follow. Presumably IBM’s own DB2 relational database and its WebSphere middleware stack will be available on the machines with hourly pricing, and ditto for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. And in cases where you necessity to demonstrate dedicated capacity – a requirement for database licensing usually – IBM can lock down a slice of a machine, or the total thing. And finally, the Power slices running on the IBM Cloud will be provisioned using Terraform, an open source utensil from HashiCorp, that is moreover used by the IBM Cloud Private stack, so it will be practicable to paddle virtual machines from private to public capacity and back again if necessary.
So how will customers consume this cloudy Power iron? “I mediate initially people will start by testing out their development and test environments and remark if it can rush out here,” says Sibley. “I moreover mediate they will remark people using the cloud for disaster recovery for Power Systems, because while companies mediate it is alright to own one datacenter, they don’t want to own two. We expect before too long IBM will be ramping up the PowerKVM hypervisor on the Power S922 machines so Linux can be supported there in a more aboriginal format, and that Linux will be added to the sizable iron Power E880 and Power E980 boxes using the PowerVM hypervisor. They would not be at perfect surprised to remark the Power E950 systems running AIX and Linux appear perfect sliced up on the IBM Cloud, either.
