Cognos, around since the 1970s, entered the BI market in the 1990s. In late 2005, Cognos re-architected its BI product and released Cognos 8 BI. The product includes reporting, analysis, scorecarding, dashboards, trade event management, data integration, and a stalwart searching feature. Cognos acquired Applix, a well known vendor of performance analytics, in October 2007.
Cognos itself then was acquired by IBM in early 2008, allowing IBM its entry into the BI market. IBM stated that the acquisition took site in order to "accelerate its ‘Information on Demand' strategy." Now known as IBM Cognos 8, the product line has seen additions and updates to it since its acquisition. For example, Cognos was updated to involve a self-serve flash-based dashboard and newfangled mobile and search capabilities, as well as compatibility with devices including BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. Cognos Express, introduced in September 2009, provides integrated BI and planning for midsize companies; Cognos TM1 provides complete planning, analysis, and reporting with advanced personalization and real-time response; Cognos Analytic Applications provide packaged reports and analysis; and other Cognos software applications are available for consolidation, planning, and dimension management.
The company offers related products, as well. IWebFOCUS FLEX Enable, released in early 2008, uses Adobe Flex technology to incorporate interactive features, such as animation, into BI dashboards, which Information Builders calls "Flashboards." The company states that the product will work with any current or future version of WebFOCUS. In October 2008 the vendor introduced WebFOCUS InfoAssist, an ad hoc reporting solution built on AJAX technology with a Microsoft Office-like user interface.
Microsoft's BI product line comprises SQL Server 2008 R2 for data storage and management (encompassing data mining, data warehousing, data quality, and ad-hoc analysis); SharePoint Server 2010 for information delivery (encompassing dashboards, collaboration/search, managed reporting, visualization, and scorecards); and Excel, along with SQL Server, for query, reporting, and analysis (encompassing ad-hoc analysis, production reporting, and OLAP analysis).
Microsoft released SharePoint Server 2010 and Office 2010 on May 12, 2010; however, both products were involved in a large beta program. By the time of the products' release, 8.6 million people were already using Office 2010 and related products, and more than 1,000 partners were already pile solutions for the products.
Founded in 1989, MicroStrategy's latest BI release is MicroStrategy 9, released in March 2009. The product includes adaptive caching technology called In-memory ROLAP, which utilizes large addressable remembrance and provides a middle-tier database that can respond directly to data requests from reports, dashboards, and OLAP analyses. Additionally, MicroStrategy 9 offers SQL generation optimizations to improve performance for queries involving tangled metrics.
MicroStrategy has announced a newfangled application platform called MicroStrategy Mobile. Due to breathe launched in July 2010, the platform is designed for the Apple's iPad and iPhone, as well as the BlackBerry mobile device. The platform will allow an organization to develop specific applications that can hasten on those mobile devices, allowing users to access information in what MicroStrategy has billed "mobile intelligence."
Oracle's BI focus is based on its trade Intelligence Suite. This product line comprises Oracle BI Suite Enterprise Edition Plus, Oracle BI touchstone Edition One, and Oracle BI Oracle Publisher (formerly XML Publisher), an enterprise reporting solution for authoring, managing, and delivering highly formatted documents. The Oracle BI product line integrates the Oracle database with Fusion middleware and analytics software and moreover includes analytics software originally from Siebel Systems, another Oracle acquisition. The product family works with both Oracle and non-Oracle environments.
Oracle took another step in the direction of BI supremacy with the acquisition in March 2007 of Hyperion System 9 BI+. This product, originally called Hyperion Essbase (derived from Extended SpreadSheet database), was developed by Arbor Software, which Hyperion acquired in 1998. Oracle has now renamed it Oracle Essbase. The product includes reporting capabilities, dashboards, and an analysis feature that moreover can breathe used in Microsoft Excel. Additionally, it combines its BI functionality with pecuniary applications, making it more of a trade Process Management (BPM) system than "just" BI.
The company includes another product in with those pertaining to BI: Oracle's Real-Time Decisions (RTD) platform combines both rules and predictive analytics, enabling real-time intelligence via a high-performance transactional server. This server automatically renders decisions within a trade process and creates actionable intelligence from data flowing through the process in existent time.
Business Objects was acquired by SAP in a "friendly takeover" completed in 2008. At its completion, SAP announced the release of nine packages, combining solutions from both companies in various groupings that are being sold by the sales departments of both companies as well. The packages drop into three categories: performance optimization applications, including pecuniary Performance Management (FPM) and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC); trade intelligence platform packages that involve Visualization and Reporting, Enterprise Query, Reporting, and Analysis, Data Integration and Data character Management, and Master Data Services; and packages geared to wee and midsized companies, including SAP trade All-in-One with BusinessObjects Edge Standard, Crystal Reports Server, and BusinessObjects Edge Series, which now includes integration for SAP Solutions. According to Gartner, the combination of SAP and trade Objects formed the largest installed base in the market, with an estimated 46,000 customers.
However, even before its acquisition of trade Objects, SAP began to expand its BI capabilities via acquisition. In February 2007 the vendor acquired Pilot Software, a privately held company specializing in strategy management software, and its flagship product, PilotWorks. SAP has integrated PilotWorks with its own applications. Additionally, the company continues to market another BI product line. SAP's trade Intelligence software package is a component of the company's NetWeaver platform, which moreover includes an enterprise portal, tools for integrating SAP software with barcode readers and Bluetooth devices, and data management software, as well as tools for custom application development. The trade Intelligence component offers a plenary line of extraction, analysis, and reporting tools with the capability to publish information to an intranet portal or mobile device.
The vendor's solution, called SAS Enterprise BI Server, includes both BI tools and a BI architecture. Its features involve Web and desktop reporting interfaces, self-service query interfaces, a Web-based interface, OLAP data storage, and a suite of graphic data presentation options, and a centralized management framework. Additionally, the vendor offers a variety of specific industry solutions, including three geared for pecuniary services, two aimed at manufacturing, three intended for retail, and two for telecommunications.
In April 2007 SAS announced its Visual BI software that allows the creation of what the vendor calls "data movies" by manipulating a motion-enabled, graphical environment. The product includes a graphics library for presentations and customizable graphics generation accessible through a dashboard that displays totality content in a customizable environment. It is powered by SAS' JMP statistical discovery software. JMP, developed by SAS in-house, can dynamically link statistics with graphics on the desktop, allowing what the vendor bills as interactive data exploration.
The latest trend in this technology locality is called "self-service BI." Analyst solid Forrester refers to it as "the only artery to construct BI more pervasive, delivering insights into every decision-important or mundane-that drives your business. It's the key to empowering users with actionable insights while removing many mundane BI evolution and maintenance tasks from IT's crushing workload."
Information Today's "Unisphere Media" concurs on the import of this trend, stating that "organizations that construct BI tools more readily accessible to a larger number of determination makers... report faster delivery of reports and models." That is, indeed, the gist of self service: it allows trade determination makers to build their own trade performance reports, instead of waiting, sometimes for weeks, for IT resources to deliver reports, as has been traditional in the BI world. One trend that has slowed recently, likely due to the economic turndown, is the market consolidation that happens when enterprise vendors acquire best-of-breed, smaller vendors. An specimen of what is sometimes called vast Fish-Little Fish, whereby large companies gobble up smaller ones, only to breathe gobbled up themselves by even larger companies, began in late 2007 when Cognos acquired performance analytics solid Applix, and then was itself acquired by IBM several months later. IBM isn't alone; many of the major enterprise vendors contain been busy acquiring smaller ones to multiply their BI portfolio. Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP totality contain acquired former best-of-breed BI vendors as well.
The trend to acquisitions is not a newfangled one. It can breathe traced back over the years, but one of the first of major import was when trade Objects acquired Crystal Decisions, a specialist in reporting tools, in December 2003. Likewise, Hyperion acquired Brio to integrate the latter's reporting technology software into its own product suite. Other activity of note included trade Objects' acquisition of Firstlogic and Hyperion's acquisition of Upstream Software. Many acquisitions occurred in 2006: Oracle acquired Siebel Systems, best known for its customer relationship management (CRM) products; Microsoft acquired ProClarity; and trade Objects acquired Firstlogic, Inc., a provider of enterprise data character software, and Nsite, a "software-as-a-service" (SaaS) provider.
In 2007 the previously mentioned Cognos and Applix acquisition happened, SAP acquired Pilot Software, and Oracle continued its buying frenzy by acquiring a major BI vendor, Hyperion Solutions. In 2008 SAP acquired trade Objects, IBM acquired Cognos, and Microsoft acquired enjoy a flash Search & Transfer ASA and DATAllegro.
Software as a Service
Often referred to by the acronym "SaaS," this software application delivery model was previously called "hosting." A vendor offers an application for utilize by customers over the Internet, and charges customers for its use, precluding the need for them to buy a similar application. Most BI vendors-particularly those courting the mid-size market-now back some character of on-demand service. For example, trade Objects, now an SAP company, specifically acquired a SaaS provider, Nsite, in November 2006 in order to offer a stronger on-demand service.
In 2007 Microsoft introduced its view of "software plus services," defined as a blended model that includes desktop software, the Internet, and data and applications on servers that can breathe delivered as services. Microsoft's point is to ensure that its Office suite can breathe used as a front conclude to other SaaS applications.
In spite of the trend of major vendors to offer their own SaaS solutions, interest continues in trade intelligence and data warehousing services offered through third-party ASPs,. Hosted services are particularly attractive to wee and mid-size firms, who were traditionally shut out of the trade intelligence market, since data-analysis capabilities can breathe delivered without the time and cost associated with client-based implementations.
Vendors contain begun adding to their BI products the competence to search throughout corporate data sources, including pecuniary and operational reports, by anyone within an organization. Cognos, now owned by IBM, first added its own search capability, called Cognos Go! Search Service; shortly thereafter, the vendor announced an alliance with Google, where searching was made even easier via Google technology. Search Service and those of WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition (a key component of the IBM WebSphere Content Discovery platform) to locate and anatomize information by including Cognos BI information as allotment of IBM enterprise search results. In addition, Information Builders moreover announced an brilliant Search capability that uses its subsidiary IWay's connectivity capability to link WebFOCUS with Google's Search Appliance.
Microsoft joined in on the credence in the import of enterprise searching capabilities. In 2008 Microsoft acquired enjoy a flash Search & Transfer ASA, a provider of enterprise search solutions. The company, which now operates as a Microsoft subsidiary, refers to the solution as "business intelligence built on search (BIBOS)."

Mobile offers wireless access to Cognos BI data via a mobile client. SAP's offering includes the capability to publish information to an intranet portal or mobile device. And Microsoft is touting mobile device back to its BI products by third parties.
Enterprise Information Portals
Increasingly, information from disparate and disconnected systems is being accumulated and presented through enterprise portals, which are accessible via ordinary desktop browsers. A portal can provide determination makers with a real-time, customized view of the business, thereby providing the competence to manage key processes. Delivery over a Web interface improves ease-of-use, which is a significant determination criterion for organizations that are evaluating trade intelligence solutions.
Strategic Planning Implications
In many cases, organizations considering the implementation of a trade intelligence solution will already contain in site a trade intelligence platform, such as an Oracle database. Adding trade intelligence capabilities to an existing platform could significantly minimize learning curves, implementation difficulties, and costs. The alternative would breathe to patch-on a third-party product.
Enterprise-wide solutions from database vendors are not the best option in totality situations, however, and other considerations weigh in favor of the best-of-breed approach. For example, BI vendors are looking to expand into smaller and mid-sized businesses (SMB); for this segment, a standalone BI product, rather than an enterprise solution, is probably a smarter choice.
In theory, a trade intelligence instrument with tangled analytic and reporting tools offers the most value to an organization; in practice, however, an application with a narrowly defined set of functions may prove the most beneficial. trade intelligence tools can breathe narrowly defined by focusing on only one locality of decision-making, such as product development, or by being delivered to a limited group of users as opposed to an entire organization. Although the current trend is toward solutions that provide access to trade intelligence information across an entire enterprise, to executive and end-users alike, department-level solutions remain a viable option in many circumstances.
Business intelligence solutions plane to reduce the confusion produced by maintaining data in disparate systems across multiple departments. Often the tools only add to the confusion, however, creating an additional layer of complexity for users. As a result, solution providers are spending significant evolution resources to ensure that their tools can deliver effective printed reports and can integrate well with common applications such as Microsoft Excel. Ultimately, the primary consideration in selecting a trade intelligence solution is whether it will provide information that is useful in making strategic decisions; information will breathe useful only to the extent that it can breathe easily and quickly accessed.

Redmond's live Dead: Microsoft's 8 Most accepted 'Zombie Products'
These products aren't really alive, but they're not quite extinct, either. They're the walking departed of Microsoft product lines, and it's best to avoid them -- if you can.

Every day in Redmond is the night of the live dead. While vibrant, well-supported, accepted offerings from the company live happily on the Microsoft campus, the ranks of their undead counterparts are swelling totality the time.
The undead are Microsoft zombie products: Offerings that Microsoft has tried to assassinate but that haven't yet settled in the software graveyard. Their production days are over, and their back days are either limited or finished. Yet they live on in IT departments, sometimes serving faultfinding purposes and requiring maintenance that becomes harder and harder to provide as their life accommodate from Redmond drains away.
Sometimes, when Microsoft kills a product, it does so in spectacular style -- the Kin phones and Windows XP SP2 are examples of that. Sometimes, though, Microsoft kills one of its offerings softly, burying the plot to exterminate it in an FAQ document or a statement stashed away on its Web site. IT professionals, beware these eight products that might behold alive but are, in fact, pretty much departed -- at least from the Microsoft perspective.
Microsoft Office wee trade AccountingThis undead app was spawned back in 2005 to tap into the lucrative wee trade accounting market, so ably dominated by Intuit with its ubiquitous QuickBooks. A year later, it was renamed Microsoft Office Accounting (MOA) and offered in a free Express Edition and a paid Professional Edition.
MOA provided a wee trade accounting application with what seemed at the time to breathe a hard-to-beat advantage: integration with apps in the Office suite. The MOA package moreover came with numerous "strategically informative ways to utilize and understand pecuniary data": everything from forecasting tools to more than 60 customizable lists and reports -- a fairly innovative attempt to salvage trade intelligence (BI) into a packaged accounting application.
And yet, despite a splashy debut, subsequent discounts and a mail-in rebate program, MOA never made much headway over the established market leaders. Intuit continued to command more than 90 percent of the market. Its closest competitor, Peachtree, owned less than 5 percent.
Microsoft officially discontinued distribution of the product on Nov. 16, 2009. In its announcement, Microsoft said: "We continually evaluate their trade strategies to construct sure we're working to meet the needs of customers, partners and shareholders. With that in mind, we've determined that existing free templates within Office used with surpass are a better option for wee businesses."
Microsoft might contain killed it, but MOA still walks the earth. The company has promised to continue providing back for the software for five years. And you can still find newfangled copies of even the 2006 edition for sale on the Web.
Microsoft MoneyPreceding MOA into the grave was Redmond's personal finance software package, Microsoft Money. It was first released as allotment of the Microsoft Home product family in the early 1990s, and quickly emerged as a worthy competitor to Intuit Quicken and other desktop financial-management apps.
Microsoft Money attracted a respectable user base over the years, but never neared the market-leading position of Intuit, which the company actually sought to buy in the mid-1990s. In August 2008, Microsoft informed its customers that it would desist releasing incremental updates of the product annually; there would breathe no 2009 version. A year later, the company officially pulled the plug on evolution of the product.
Explaining its decision, Microsoft said on its "Money Plus" Web site: "The category of personal financial-management software has changed considerably in the 17 years since Money was first established. As more users shift their attention to full-service offerings provided by banks and brokerages, claim for a comprehensive personal finance toolset has declined."
Among those changes was the advent of free, Internet-based competitors, including Mint.com and the Intuit Quicken Online program, which took the desktop finance software market into territory where Microsoft doesn't contain the surest footing.
Moreover, the death of Microsoft Money was seen by industry watchers as allotment of an overall cost-cutting effort, announced in early 2009, which included a procedure to lay off as many as 5,000 employees. A Microsoft spokesperson said at the time that the company was "planning for economic uncertainty."
Microsoft has promised to back the still-animated corpse of Money through January 2011. And several editions of Microsoft Money Plus 2008 can still breathe institute shuffling around on online retail sites.
Response PointLaunched in March 2007 amid much fanfare, this Microsoft on-premises, Voice over IP (VoIP)-based private arm exchange (PBX) system was aimed at wee businesses that couldn't afford expensive and tangled switchboard systems, but still needed that capability. The procedure was to construct PBX inexpensive and accessible via the Internet, and Microsoft partnered with several phone makers to dispense the product.
But Response Point was a targeted, niche play that just didn't pan out. During a June 2009 Microsoft Town Hall meeting with value added resellers, the company revealed that the product had gone into "maintenance mode," and no future releases were planned. The product is scheduled to associate the ranks of the walking departed this year on Aug. 31, when Microsoft will discontinue it officially.
As Microsoft explained in its announcement: "Despite benign initial response from customers and channel partners since launch, they haven't seen the necessary claim materialize to sustain Response Point as a viable standalone business. To continue to back the needs of the wee trade community, they expect to consolidate their efforts and offerings in this space around Microsoft Office Communications Server."
Current Response Point customers will breathe able to continue using the product, as Microsoft says, "per their equipment manufacturer purchase agreement." And Redmond promises to continue to back its partners and current customers via a special Web site, until Nov. 1, 2011.
PerformancePoint ServerOn June 6, 2006, Microsoft unveiled a newfangled trade process management product that pulled together several existing products, including its trade Scorecard Manager, components from its Dynamics product line, and the newly acquired analytics tools from ProClarity. Dubbed PerformancePoint Server, it provided a number of features, including dashboards, scorecards, key performance indicators, reports, filters and strategy maps, totality delivered via a monitoring server.
The product was released in September 2007, and industry watchers notable that Microsoft was entering a maturing market late -- perhaps too late to ensnare up with BPM offerings from IBM Corp., Oracle Corp., SAP AG and SAS Institute Inc., not to mention products from BI and enterprise resource planning vendors. But they moreover expected Microsoft to conclude what Microsoft does: stick with the product, refining versions until it gained market traction.
But a down economy and a customer base that, as Microsoft establish it, "needs to conclude more with less," caused the company to assassinate the standalone product in April 2009, and then quickly resurrect several of its features in SharePoint 2010 as PerformancePoint Services for SharePoint. Those features included the scorecard, dashboard and analytic functionality.
"Our determination is based on wanting customers to truly experience pervasive trade intelligence in their organization at a low cost through the tools they utilize every day," Kurt DelBene, senior VP of the Microsoft Office trade Platform Group, said at the time. "In today's economic climate, having the most pertinent information available, allowing you to clearly view the health of your organization, is imperative. They want to give what customers need in a artery that makes sense for their trade -- through the widely adopted Office SharePoint Server, the planning and analysis instrument Microsoft Office Excel, and the highly scalable Microsoft SQL Server."
Windows Live OneCareIntroduced in 2006, Windows Live OneCare was the Microsoft all-in-one security package aimed at the home PC user. Offered on a subscription basis, it provided a combination of anti-virus software, a firewall, back-up and restore utilities, a tune-up utility and malware protection.
Live OneCare stirred up the market for a while, seemingly scaring the pants off competitors. (Symantec CEO John Thompson threw snarky barbs about the product's pricing.) But they shouldn't contain worried: OneCare never really won a significant partake of the consumer PC security market.
Microsoft announced its plans to haul the plug on Windows Live OneCare in November 2008, but didn't discontinue sales of the standalone product until on June 30, 2009. The company essentially replaced Live OneCare with Microsoft Security Essentials, a free, downloadable anti-malware program -- no back-up or tune-up utilities included.
Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Microsoft Online Services and Windows Division, said in a statement at the time: "Customers around the world contain told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from newfangled and existing threats, and they bewitch that concern seriously. This new, no-cost offering will give us the competence to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of newfangled PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware."
Microsoft has promised to continue supporting the users of this undead software through the terms of their subscriptions. But Redmond hasn't optimized the product for the Windows 7 OS or Windows XP mode in Windows 7.
Windows Essential trade ServerMicrosoft Windows Essential trade Server (EBS) was designed to provide an IT infrastructure for midsize businesses. The product was built from the Windows Server 2008 code base, and included three licenses of the OS plus Exchange Server 2007, System heart Essentials 2007, Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Forefront Threat Management Gateway (Medium trade Edition). The Premium Edition added another Windows Server 2008 touchstone Edition license and the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 touchstone database software.
Microsoft released version 2008 of the product, but would never release version 2010. The company cited need of demand, but moreover a market shift within the midsize trade segment to cloud-based management and virtualization. Windows EBS seemed to breathe offering a solution to a market segment that didn't need one.
In a March 2010 blog entry, the Windows EBS team wrote: "Since the launch of EBS, several changes contain occurred that drove their determination to streamline their server product portfolio. First, midsize businesses are rapidly turning to technologies such as management, virtualization and cloud computing as a means to cleave costs, improve efficiency and multiply competitiveness. Those capabilities are already available through other offerings, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System heart and the Microsoft trade Productivity Online Suite."
Microsoft announced it would discontinue evolution of Windows EBS as of June 30, 2010, and that it would no longer breathe available for purchase as of July 1, 2010.
The blog went on to announce a "limited offer" for current EBS 2008 customers, who, from June 30, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2010, would breathe able to salvage the individual component software from the EBS 2008 suite for free (plus local taxes and shipping and handling charges). The company promised that the death of Windows EBS would not "impact any other Windows Server products and solutions, including the next version of Windows wee trade Server (SBS)."
