IBM Power Systems Can achieve ample Data Analytics, Too | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Server workloads are typically broken down into two broad categories: transactional or analytical. For most IBM i shops, the focus is heavily on the transactional side of the equation. But as IBM i shops peek over the wall into the rapidly expanding world of ample data analytics, they will live pleased to find that IBM and its partners are bringing together a collection of ample data tooling that will happily dash on the system they already own.

Granted, the chances of the ample data analytics software running directly on IBM i are slim to none. While IBMers like Mike Cain will stand toe to toe with DB2/400…er, DB2 for i…against any relational database out there when it comes to performance, security, and scalability, the fact is that ample data analytics, as it exists today, largely lives beyond the realm of relational databases.

Most of the ample data products, such as IBM’s distribution of Hadoop (called InfoSphere BigInsights), dash on Linux, which is the de facto criterion for the new generation of ample data products. AIX noiseless has a foothold, especially for traditional trade intelligence tools like the SPSS statistics package and the Cognos reporting and data warehousing tools. But the platform focus for emerging data analytic product categories is primary Linux, according to Linton Ward, an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Chief Engineer Power Workload Optimized Systems.

“The preponderance of analytic growth over foreseeable future is in the Linux ecosystem,” Ward tells IT Jungle. “There are many players in the analytic space that we’ll live bringing out on the Linux on Power platform over the next year or so.”

You may live wondering why IBM thinks Power is a worthy platform for ample data analytics when the vast majority of ample data analytic products today were designed to dash on X86 machines. (You reflect of worthy questions!) After all, one of the main selling points of Hadoop is that it basically gives you supercomputing-like power on cheap Intel hardware but without the supercomputing-like cost. And Power, they know, is a rung-up from Intel in the cost department.

The answer, not surprisingly, is money. They are at the very tip of a surge in ample data analytic spending, and IBM wants a piece of the action with Power. But IBM is fighting an uphill battle in that its Power servers are typically more expensive than Intel-based servers (less so recently, but noiseless so).

Positioning Power for platforms like Hadoop is moreover forcing IBM to shift from the ample endian approach to a miniature endian one, and from a scale-up architecture to a scale-out one, Ward says.

The limitations of clustering traditional relational databases required IBM and other ample Unix server makers to focus on structure massive symmetric multi-processor (SMP) servers that could house great amounts of data in a solitary operating system footprint. But those limitations are starting to fade away, both for transactional and analytic workloads, thanks to Hadoop, NoSQL, and other ample data technologies.

Ward, for one, is bullish on this approach to tackling the ample data market occasion with a scale-out Power architecture. A bit piece of that passage is the OpenPower Foundation that IBM founded to bring together a group of partners to build “white box” servers built on Power8 chips. IBM has signed up the likes of Google, Nvidia, Mellanox, and Tyan to the OpenPower Foundation with the hope of giving IBM a scale-out record to retract up against Intel.

IBM is hoping that the higher performance and greater efficiency of its Power server will allow it to assume some share of new ample data workloads away from Intel. And ample Blue is putting its money where its mouth is by shipping the ship smaller 2U and 4U Power8 servers that will serve as nodes in a cluster before shipping the big-daddy SMP Power8 machines later this year.

Whether or not placing Power’s chips on a distributed, scale-out wager works, IBM will live working to figure out ways to yield ample data easier to adopt for its established real-world customers running transactional systems on IBM i, AIX, and z/OS. “We’re not abandoning AIX. We’re not walking away from IBM i .We’re not that stupid to walk away from those,” Ward reassures us.

It’s more about enabling new workloads, like Hadoop, for systems of date or systems of insight, he says. “It’s the notion that, for interacting with clients, the Web 2.0 environments and–to expend the IBM phrase–this new cognitive computing era, they believe there is substantial growth going forward.”

The rush to a white-box, scale-out, little-endian approach with Power Linux is aimed at attracting new customers and new workloads to the platform. IBM has invested $1 billion in prepping Power Linux for its new ample data and OpenStack roles. But that doesn’t value that IBM i shops can’t ride the coattails of this investment. With a miniature investment in skills and software, a typical midmarket IBM i shop could position itself to start taking handicap of some of IBM’s ample data investments.

The skills required to implement and dash Hadoop or a column-oriented data warehouse such as PureData for Operational Analytics (formerly Netezza) are quite different than the skills required to maintain an RPG-based ERP system running on DB2 for i. In particular, it is getting tougher and more expensive to find people with the requisite math, programming, and data science skills necessary to yield the fullest and best expend of big, unstructured data, which IBM says accounts for 80 percent of complete new data created today.

But it would appear that there are some cost savings to live had by utilizing Power to dash both transactional workloads on IBM i and analytic workloads on Linux. At a inevitable level, there should live some overlap in the IT skills necessary to manage and maintain the Power environments. Having one vendor to uphold both server environments may moreover live a blessing (although it might moreover live a curse, depending on how you ogle at it).

IBM has a decent selection of ample data software packages for Power today. It starts with the ample Insights package, and includes InfoSphere streams (for streaming ample data), DB2 BLU for column-oriented queries within a relational database (available only on DB2 for LUW), Cognos, SPSS, and ILOG. IBM has in-memory capabilities, recently bought a cloud-based NoSQL database company, and has no shortage of master data management, encryption, deduplication, and replication tools. It has complete the parts–perhaps more than it can sometimes coherently communicate without devolving into an overwhelming morass of options and parts numbers and license types (ahem).

And while there is a clear distinction between transactional and analytic, let’s not forget what IBM is doing with System z and the new zDoop Hadoop package it recently enabled to dash there (in the Linux subsystem). Because it takes so many MIPS to rush data off z/OS, some mainframe customers are better served by actually running Hadoop in station on the System z, where unstructured data from the much ample world can live blended with the structured data that runs so nicely on the mainframe. If this works on System z, there’s the possibility that there could live a market for this on IBM i, which is equally encamped in the structured-data world.

At the very least, IBM should build a connector that allows DB2 for i data to live easily pulled into ample Insights running on Power Linux. The latest release of ample Insights, version 3.0, brings a new release of the ample SQL component that allows users to labor with Hadoop data via SQL. Oracle‘s database is now supported, along with DB2 LUW and other sources, so why not DB2 for i?

EnterpriseDB comforts HP-UX shops with PostgreSQL | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

EnterpriseDB – the entity that sells an extended version of the open source PostgreSQL database as well as commercial-grade uphold for that software – is sitting pretty.

At just the moment that Hewlett-Packard is embroiled in a lawsuit concerning Oracle's cessation of development of its database, middleware, and applications on future Itanium processors – and therefore on current and future releases of the HP-UX variant of Unix from HP – EnterpriseDB is for the first time rolling out uphold for HP-UX with its PostgreSQL Plus Advanced Server 9.0 database.

The timing for official PostgreSQL uphold is not coincidental. In fact, according to Karen Padir, vice president of products and marketing at the upstart database distributor, says that HP approached EnterpriseDB in January or February, before the Itanium issue erupted between Oracle and the server maker but after Oracle had acquired HP Unix rival Sun Microsystems and former HP CEO and chairman stamp Hurd had moved to Oracle as co-president and the gloves had clearly foster off between these two former partners.

HP and EnterpriseDB were working on formal uphold for HP-UX/Itanium platforms at the request of a number of HP customers, not because of any specific learning of what Oracle would achieve only a few weeks later in March.

The open source PostgreSQL database has long-since dash on HP-UX systems with PA-RISC or Itanium processors for years, and indeed, according to its platform release notes, the open source version can live loaded and just about anything that looks or smells like Unix or Linux as well as Windows.

You can build PostgreSQL 7.3 or higher from source on HP-UX 10.X or 11.X versions on either PA-RISC or Itanium machines, provided you believe the prerogative compiler tools. This sort of thing is fine for a hyperscale Web company, but corporate data centers running trade applications are not that bunch when it comes to software. They like binaries for target platforms and lots of hand-holding for patching and for when things retract wrong.

This is where EnterpriseDB comes in, providing commercial uphold as well as some features that are not available in the open source PostgreSQL that justify paying for a uphold contract.

EnterpriseDB sells two versions of its database. criterion Server is a hardened version of the open source PostgreSQL code, which is open source like PostgreSQL itself, while Advanced Server has a bunch of add-ons, including an Oracle database compatibility layer, that are not in the open source program. That Oracle compatibility layer, by the way, was licensed by IBM to embed in its DB2 9.7 database and was independently licensed by data warehousing appliance maker Netezza as well before ample Blue bought the company last year.

    Apotheker Ellison PostgreSQL pinch

HP can yield Oracle feel the database pinch

The PostgreSQL Plus Advanced Server 9.0 includes the seventh generation of this Oracle database skinning technology. EnterpriseDB has been supporting Oracle's PL/SQL language, which is used to create triggers and stored procedures that salvage embedded in databases, for years now, but with the 9.0 release of Advanced Server, EnterpriseDB now supports Oracle's Pro*C embedded SQL programming language, which converts SQL to C or C++ and then compiles it down to the iron to dash quick and thwack against the database.

Two of the six core people working on the PostgreSQL project labor at EnterpriseDB, and Padir says that the company is absolutely undaunted about its talent to port Oracle databases to Advanced Server and point existing applications at its database management system instead of Larry Ellison's. Over the years, the company has developed an Oracle migration assessment that scans the databases, scripts, and code to reckon how difficult of a port a customer is facing. The assessment has a scale from 10, lifeless easy, to 1, this will occasions some sweating. "We salvage a lot of 7s," explains Padir. "But they believe the expertise and they can achieve just about anything if a customer wants it."

With Advanced Server 9.0, EnterpriseDB moreover includes a parallel database loader, which can reduce the load time by a factor of nine, depending on the hardware configuration. Advanced Server already had a utensil called xDB to replicate data directly from Oracle databases to PostgreSQL databases, and with the 9.0 release, now xDB can similarly replicate to Microsoft SQL Server databases.

The PostgreSQL community has moreover cooked up built-in replication and stinging standby database clustering that is analogous to the Dataguard feature for Oracle's databases, and the sempiternal Cache implementation of the memcached caching server running atop PostgreSQL has been tweaked to allow for server nodes to live added to the sempiternal Cache cluster without having to halt the caching servers.

    Oracle cat bounce

EnterpriseDB wants to assume the wind out of Oracle's sales

The HP-UX uphold is available in both the criterion and Advanced Editions of PostgreSQL Plus, so you don't believe to retract full-in to dash the PostgreSQL database on HP-UX. Padir tells El Reg that the database will scale well up to 24 cores, and HP and EnterpriseDB are working to extend that further. While the open source PostgreSQL code will dash on PA-RISC or Itanium iron with wither HP-UX 10.X or 11.X operating system versions, EnterpriseDB is only supporting HP-UX 11i v3 Update 1009 and only Itanium-based Integrity servers with PostgreSQL Plus 9.0.

Support for Oracle's and Fujitsu's Sparc platforms running Solaris 10 is coming this summer, and AIX uphold has not been done formally. (EnterpriseDB did a port of its Advanced Server to Linux on Power and even beta tested it, but it has not been productized yet.) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.X, Centos 5.X, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, Canonical Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R1 and R2. The Windows versions, by the way, as 32-bit builds.

PostgreSQL Plus 9.0 criterion Edition costs $2,495 per server socket with basic 9x5 uphold and $2,995 per socket for premium 24x7 support. The Advanced Edition costs $3,995 per socket for basic uphold and $4,495 per socket for premium support. If you want uphold for the open source community edition of PostgreSQL, EnterpriseDB will live pleased to achieve it, but that will cost you $3,250 per socket for basic uphold and $3,750 for premium support.

Rather than messing around, HP should buy out IBM's stake in EnterpriseDB and just finally salvage itself a database of its own to sell. Apotheker has software aspirations, and while he is at it, he should salvage sedate and buy Red Hat, too. That would give HP the operating system, middleware, and database options to counter both Oracle and IBM. While EnterpriseDB has grown decently, from 75 customers in 2006 to nearly 800 by the proximate of last year, it could grow a lot faster with the HP R&D and sales channel behind it. Buying Red Hat is just obvious. ®
