Coriant analysis has estimated that more resilient bandwidth allocation in response to application-driven traffic requirements can generate total mobile backhaul capital expenditure savings of up to 35%. A dynamic path control plane can automate S1 activation to virtual gateways, swirl on small cells as needed based on network usage, and optimize the S1 path in real time based on network performance, alarms, or congestion from other sites and applications.
More broadly, SDN automation can ensure optimal routing to maintain QoE across mobile backhaul and fixed-mobile converged networks and can be linked to on-demand service delivery.
Network uphold for Distributed Virtual Gateways (Smart Mobile Cloud). In the dynamic network of the future, instead of directing traffic to one central gateway, a coalesce of virtual resources (EPCs, ADCs, security gateways, etc.) will be available on demand, just as virtual servers are activated in data centers today. Virtual appliances will be distributed to more effectively cover urban metro areas, bucolic communities, enterprise customers, or dedicated IoT applications.
To uphold this dynamic environment, access and aggregation networks must adapt in real time to provide connectivity on the soar as virtual resources are activated. SDN-based network automation is required where destination routing using static MPLS tunnels does not provide sufficient flexibility. Having a pellucid understanding of the highest potential applications for SDN in MBH, as well as developing consistent criteria for solution evaluation, will be essential to gain maximum profit from these initial deployments.

Kyle Sisk knew exactly how his nonprofit organization could accelerate streaming educational video to its subscribers. The only problem was that he couldn't afford it, or so he thought.
Best described as a tiny Netflix for a specialized audience, Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP), headquartered in Silver Spring, Md., is funded by U.S. Department of Education grants to deal educational video content to K-12 students with visual and/or hearing impairments. But the organization is at the clemency of available bandwidth and a wide variety of network issues.
As informational systems manager at DCMP, Sisk wanted subscribers to be able to access DCMP's library of 7,000-plus videos without suffering the buffering coterie of death that signals network problems. From his background in video production, Sisk knew a content delivery network (CDN) could accelerate distribution by caching videos on servers on the network edge located as near to the user as possible.
Hosting its own sparkle Media Server in-house for two years, DCMP's IT staff had spent hours dealing with bandwidth constraints and troubleshooting with users to try to deliver video through school firewalls, where DCMP's IP address often wasn't recognized as a trusted provider. That's when the organization decided to study at CDNs again.
"We assessed a lot of small CDN players because they assumed that was complete they could afford," Sisk says, although he too contacted cloud-based Limelight Networks, one of the larger CDN service providers, but only to regain a baseline so he could compare it to the prices, services and geographic compass of the smaller players.
"In talking with [Limelight's] sales engineers, they figured out that they could actually afford it. They were shocked, to be honest," Sisk says.
CDN market grows
DCMP is just one of a growing number of organizations using CDN services to accelerate the delivery of content by caching it locally. And more enterprises are weighing whether CDNs could travail for them.
First created in the late 1990s, content delivery networks were originally the province of the biggest online media outlets, software distributors and e-commerce companies that wanted to deliver content as near to the user's location as possible. At the time, network bandwidth was constrained and latency was high. Akamai Technologies, the oldest denomination in CDNs, launched service in 1999 to address penniless content delivery by placing distributed infrastructure -- often hundreds or thousands of servers -- at points of presence (POPs) or data centers around the world.
Like getting an Amazon order delivered the selfsame day from a local Amazon warehouse, distributed CDN architecture offloads content from the customer and accelerates its delivery by caching a copy and serving it to the user from the POP closest to them. While CDN services weren't cheap, they were a necessity for companies that depended on website performance and availability.
With customer-facing websites now commonplace, the concept of serving content locally is flourishing. Due to the increased expend of video, the growing digital economy and increased cloud services adoption, a number of fresh CDN providers Have launched in the past five years. To compete against established companies like Akamai, many target specific types of customers at prices lower than ever before, making CDN services affordable to the many rather than the few.
CDNs typically address three core areas -- software, media and website delivery -- which now too includes mobile application delivery, says Gartner CDN analyst Lydia Leong.
Branching out over the years, CDN providers Have too added complementary services that construct their value about more than speed. Options comprehend distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, web application firewall services, streaming video platforms, load-balancing, web content optimization and analytics. Some CDNs give customers access to their platforms, allowing developers to expend their application program interfaces (APIs) to add features to their own applications. Others construct testing before buying easy so businesses can view immediately what CDN services can execute for them.

CDN service prices and options
The trick for any enterprise is finding the CDN service that fits its needs at the prerogative price.
Traditional CDN pricing is driven by volume -- the number of viewers, the object size of the cached content and the number of distributed locations serving it. towering volume often means towering discounts. Cloud-based CDN services are usually lower, and the more basic the service, the lower the price.
It helps to start the CDN search process knowing how many objects might need to be cached, the mediocre size of those objects and how many visitors you expect. It's too useful to factor in the costs the enterprise already pays to Run its website to wait on compare it to the cost of using CDN services. These comprehend the obvious storage and server costs, along with less-obvious components like the cost of API-driven store look-up features that using a CDN might offset.
Akamai remains the mammoth daddy of CDNs, with its own network, intellectual property, customer list that reads like a who's who of internet companies, and services for complete CDN market segments. With longevity and 215,000 servers deployed in more than 2,000 locations, Akamai has between 50% and 60% of the market share.
With Akamai's depth and breadth, it may sound like other providers should pack up their tents. But customer options continue to grow.
Some CDNs differentiate themselves on the fact that they're not Akamai, pitching themselves as "new and nimble," if smaller. Some serve specific regions; others target small and midsize businesses, or appeal to developers with their open APIs.
The fresh world of CDN competition includes providers like Fastly with its API-driven focus; ChinaCache with extensive presence in China; CloudFlare; Amazon's CloudFront; CDNetworks; Yottaa with its mobile performance focus; and Limelight Networks' video services. The list goes on.
A typical Akamai customer often pays from $10,000 per month and up, Leong says, usually not a small-business price. Yet Akamai sells some of its CDN services at lower prices through hosting companies or service providers. The availability of cloud-based CDNs has given accelerated content delivery a boost for companies of complete sizes, however. Cloud-based CDNs aren't as expensive to launch because they're not necessarily buying piles of their own servers. "That means you can start a CDN as if it were a software company," Leong says.
In making their choices, businesses may not be of a size to economically expend Akamai, but there are options, Leong says. "Because the cloud is driving fresh opportunities, the digitalization of the economy is driving tremendous fresh ranges of things that reside on the internet."
Using its cloud services dominance, Amazon Web Services (AWS), as the largest cloud services provider, is driving CDN awareness (and lower pricing models). AWS makes it easy and affordable for AWS cloud customers by integrating its cloud storage with its own CDN, CloudFront.
While there may be reasons to expend a more sophisticated CDN service, AWS's approach is compelling as a starting point, Leong says.
"If you're a startup or other company delivering your online property using AWS, it makes a lot of sense in many cases to expend Amazon's CDN," she says. "Amazon makes it easy, so more people can, in a sense, play with it to view if it works for them."
Testing, testing, testing
The capacity to test CDN services in real time and view the immediate inequity a CDN can construct -- or not -- may be the strongest selling point for growing CDN adoption. Rather than conducting a huge request for proposal, customers can just try a CDN and view what happens, Leong says, adding that SMB-focused CloudFlare lets users symptom up and expend it without paying anything upfront.
"We always recommend that customers study at CDNs by actually trying them to regain a sense of how much caching improves performance," Leong says, adding that businesses can then resolve if basic caching is enough or they need a more sophisticated service.
Test results can too wait on enterprises regain buy-in from multiple stakeholders within their companies since CDNs don't tumble strictly under the jurisdiction or budget of networking or IT.
Testing made the inequity for About.com, one of the oldest established web properties. The fresh York-based company, launched in 1997, offers more than 3.5 million pieces of largely static content on about 1,000 topics that generate about 30 million page views a month. For years, the company assumed most of those page views came from North America, says Matt Landolf, About's director of operations.
About.com has traditionally tested content delivery every couple of years, and the results were never compelling enough to warrant buying CDN services, so it continued to serve its content from its three POPs in San Jose, Dallas and fresh York. That changed in 2012 when the team extended testing to international locations with both Akamai and Fastly.
"We Have really profitable BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) peering and are partnered well, and they were still under the impression that most of their main audience was in North America," Landolf says. Expanding its testing to Australia and Southeast Asia showed those segments of About's audience had grown and that it could elect an unacceptable eight seconds to regain a page served in some locations.
"We chopped down their response time by more than half for 20% of their audience with just a quick change," Landolf says.
About.com chose Fastly's CDN services, and uses other services from Akamai. The biggest selling point to the About.com developers and decision-makers concerned about making a mammoth change was seeing how quickly they could construct changes to Fastly's global caches.
Using Fastly's Instant Purge feature, "If there was a mistake or something unforeseen happened, you could change it and the configuration would be replicated around the world in less than three seconds," Landolf says.
Who will buy?
Pain points usually drive the search for a CDN service, but CDN buyers aren't easily classified. Not only execute the types of businesses buying CDNs vary, but the stakeholders within them Have a wide ambit of roles that comprehend network architects, network security architects, web application developers, CIOs, chief marketing officers, even individual lines of trade that may Have a mobile app they want to perform better.
Coming from a nontechnical background, Mirjana Novkovic, vice president of marketing at speakers bureau Harry Walker Agency, needed to ameliorate video delivery via the agency's website. After reading it, Novkovic decided to comprehend CDNs in her video platform search process.
"It was really a huge learning curve for me because I'm not a technical person, so they were looking for a colleague that could truly be an extension of their department," she says.
In her conversations with top video platform providers and CDNs, Limelight won hands-down for customer service and the information they provided her company. If she has a problem, Novkovic says she sends a quick email and gets one prerogative back from someone on the case. "It's a name, a person I can call. I judge that's so important. They provided more than 200% over what I was even looking for," she says.
In the growing CDN service market, most providers proffer businesses content delivery services along with crossover services that comprehend security, video and optimization. And by targeting specific businesses and making their networks more programmable, Gartner's Leong says more CDNs are addressing segments of the market that haven't been included in the past. At this point, almost any company could potentially need a CDN.

The first thing you notice when entering Studio A at the new, state-of-the-art facility where NBCUniversal Owned TV Stations Division’s WCAU Philadelphia newscasts will soon be produced is an gigantic cityscape behind the anchor desk.
Measuring 20 feet across by 10 feet high, the image is not unlike those on many TV stations these days. Except that on this one, flags are affecting in a slight walkaway and the water of the Delaware River is flowing by on a gray, overcast day.
“It’s a 4K LED monitor which will broadcast 4K video from a 4K camera,” explains Ric Harris, president and general manager of NBC10 and sister station WWSI (Telemundo62). “It’s going to give us the best skyline shot of Philadelphia.”
The facility, too home to WWSI, offers imposing views from any of its windows. It’s located on three floors (12-14) of the 60-floor, 1,121-foot Comcast Technology hub in downtown Philadelphia.
Inward from Studio A, you can study across a glass enclosed, two-story atrium to view a similar studio — just steps away — where the WWSI anchors will sit in front of another, only slightly smaller, 4K monitor.
An open staircase just outside the entrance to Studio A descends to a large, open newsroom, flooded with daylight from the atrium’s main wall, where reporters and producers from both stations travail together.
But the real marvel of the position may not be the architecture and interior design, but the cutting-edge fibered-linked IP infrastructure at its core.
The open newsroom
“I didn’t want to be restricted by traditional SDI routers, and I wanted the capacity to build video coming in and Have it journey anywhere else in the plant,” says Tony Plosz, WCAU-WWSI VP of engineering and operations.
“I too wanted the flexibility so that staff could expend any system, and travail anywhere across the floors, or even in the field. The ‘anywhere, anything’ philosophy was really mammoth in the design.”
Having originally planned to launch in late 2017, NBCU has been letting its 2018 launch date — now set for sometime this tumble — quietly slip as engineers travail to finalize software and staff gets up to accelerate on updated platforms.
“We are using the latest versions of the technologies they Have installed, and they are working now to construct certain everything works together as it should,” Harris says. “We will launch when they know it’s right.”
The stations’ sales, traffic, finance and human resources departments have already moved in and news, creative services and engineering staff Have been splitting time between the fresh space and the existing station in suburban Bala Cynwyd, which will eventually be vacated.
“It’s been a long road, and like any other large-scale project, we’ve made changes along the way,” says Plosz. “It’s been a lot of fun, seeing a concrete slab swirl into functioning office space.”
Integration And Connectivity
Comcast Technology hub is Run by NBC parent Comcast and real estate investment reliance Liberty Property Trust. Besides the stations, the other primary tenants are Comcast and a Four Seasons Hotel, which occupies the top of the building.
LF Driscoll is the general contractor of the structure with Diversified handling the technical integration for the broadcast facility.
The broadcast facility will accommodate about 180 employees. An additional 60 employees, such as photographers and reporters, will mostly stick to the field.
The journey into the fresh facility is allowing NBCU to further integrate WCAU with WWSI, which it acquired in 2013. “We’re taking it another step further here, and they are truly on the selfsame platform,” says Plosz. “They Have identical control rooms, the selfsame technology in the studios, everything is the same. Before, so much was build together on the fly, while here they start from complete scratch.”
Another of the goals is to better integrate broadcast and digital production. Reporters, producers and anchors working on a expose gather at a pod — one of several long narrow black tables topped by black monitors — where they can collaborate as they regain closer to air. Steps away is the digital pod for both stations, and immediately behind that is the assignment desk.
“It’s complete connected,” Harris says. “Weather, expose pods, digital, assignment desk — all within steps of walking to one another.”
The open floor concept contrasts with the chopped-up configuration in Bala Cynwyd where Plosz says “everybody was in their own Little corner or section. There’s no hunting for someone, complete the core groups are on 12.”
Nestled next to Studio A — and a few feet away from a reception desk — is Harris’ office. “This is a microcosm of what the station is about,” he says. “There is a sense of connectivity. My office isn’t off in the hinterlands. I’m centrally located so I Have access to their folks and the team has access to me.”
There are three studios. The 2,600-square-foot Studio A for WCAU, a 2,400-square-foot studio for WWSI and a 1,500-square-foot auxiliary studio with a great green screen that covers the entire rear wall, giving the station the chance to execute full virtual set operation in the future.
Plosz sees that third studio as a “really resilient space” that will be used for special news segments as well as being employed by creative services to produce commercials for local advertisers.
The 13th floor houses back-office functions including sales and traffic as well as executive offices. The 14th floor contains the finance and human resources departments, a great conference elbowroom and the Central outfit elbowroom (CER), which represents the technical guts of the facility.
IP At The Core
The routing core is a Cisco 100-gigabit Ethernet “Fabric for Media” architecture that links to Grass Valley IPG (IP gateway) cards, allowing the stations to elect video and “route it via IP to wherever it needs to go,” says Engineering VP Tony Plosz.
When the stations did the technical design 2.5 years ago, Plosz opted to journey with an IP routing core. But at that point the SMPTE 2110 criterion didn’t yet exist, and vendors at the 2016 NAB expose were mostly talking about supporting the IP transport of content instead of actually doing it.
“When they did the proof of concept with Diversified in Atlanta, it was Little different than traditional TV stations they had done,” says Plosz. “There were a lot of things that didn’t exist.”
Since he couldn’t design a completely IP operation in 2016, Plosz opted for an IP core, with no traditional SDI router, but “off-ramps to SDI” throughout the stations’ operations. The routing core is a Cisco 100-gigabit Ethernet “Fabric for Media” architecture that links to Grass Valley IPG (IP gateway) cards, allowing the stations to elect video and “route it via IP to wherever it needs to go,” says Plosz.
“When they first started this endeavor, they didn’t know who was making what,” says Plosz. “There was [SMPTE] 2022-6, and 2022-7, but they didn’t know what would be compatible. Over the course of two years the design changed, as even more things went autochthonous IP.”
For example, in that time Ross Video’s graphics went from “SDI islands” to direct IP, he notes.
The Cisco routing switches are configured in a traditional spine-and-leaf architecture, says Plosz, with distributed routing across the entire central outfit room. That allows the station to easily plug in fresh outfit to the top of a rack and cuts down on overall cabling. There is no need to Run cable to one back row, as the gross router is distributed across mulitple rack rows.
When Plosz began looking in 2016 at broadcast vendors to uphold the IP infrastructure, he quickly narrowed the choices to Grass Valley and Evertz and eventually settled on Grass Valley.
At that point Evertz already had some great IP installations at major broadcasters like ESPN, using its proprietary ASPEN video-over-IP transport protocol.
“They did so well before there were any standards created — they were affecting IP packets and they had some ripen product,” says Plosz. “But what was the inequity between that and a traditional SDI router? They were affecting IP video around, but it was still done through their own switch, and you couldn’t journey other data through it. Did I really want to supersede one proprietary router with another?”
In the end, Plosz thought that Grass Valley had a more comprehensive long-term vision for IP routing and would “be better partners through the science project.”
One of his design criteria was that if the station was going to build its routing on a COTS (common off-the-shelf hardware) switch, it still needed the full uphold of whatever traditional broadcast vendor was interfacing with it.
“Grass Valley is their ‘one throat to choke,’ so to speak,” jokes Plosz. “We Have a imposing relationship with Cisco, but if they Have any issues, they journey to Grass Valley.”
In addition to the IP gateways, Grass Valley has too supplied its LDX 86 studio cameras. Besides Cisco and Grass Valley, other key vendors for the fresh facility comprehend Dalet Galaxy asset management, Ross Overdrive production automation, Adobe Premiere nonlinear editing, Lawo audio processing and EMC Isilon solid-state storage.
Fiber, Fiber Everywhere
Being fraction of the Comcast enterprise means this fresh facility has an incredible amount of fiber-optic connectivity. That is vital when housing a station in a skyscraper, notes Plosz, as he’s not going to position a microwave tower on the roof.
“This structure is extremely well connected, and the levels of redundancy here are nothing short of staggering,” says Plosz. “There’s half a terabit per second of I/O in and out of this place, with two complete diverse paths.”

In all, there are 60 miles of fiber in the Comcast Technology hub with 1,100 access points. complete the major wireless carriers Have multiple transmitters in the building, says Plosz, and cellphones travail even in the “deepest, darkest corner” in the parking garage.
“It’s a phenomenal data system,” he says.
All of the beauty cameras the stations expend around Philadelphia now Run on the Comcast IP network. The facility is too converting its studio-to-transmitter link to IP with two physically diverse 100-gigabit fiber paths.
The transmitter site is in Roxborough, northwest of downtown.
“There’s still some microwave gear there, and a Little satellite farm,” says Plosz. “We’re going to extend their Media Fabric over fiber out to Roxborough and construct it fraction of their [network], an operator here could pull from there and won’t know any difference. They wouldn’t be able to execute that without the connectivity they have.”
The fresh broadcast facility is designed to be one of the most energy-efficient TV operations in the country. It uses heating/cooling and ventilating systems that ameliorate indoor property and reduce noise, and incorporates other green features like capturing natural light from its wall-to-floor windows, water and energy conservation throughout and automated window shades to reduce summer heat. The stations Have too tried to expend Energy Star-compliant displays and computers wherever possible.
The stations Have applied for an LEED Platinum certification, which if approved by the U.S. Green structure Council, would be the first time a local broadcast TV station achieves the Platinum LEED level.
Another unique feature of the Comcast Technology hub is the sheer volume of broadcast service panels located throughout the building, including in the lobby, outside on the street, in the cafeteria and the building’s “town hall space,” and in several locations within the Four Seasons Hotel including the ballroom and restaurants on the top two floors.
“We already handle their newsroom as a fourth studio,” says Plosz. “Now the structure becomes that fifth studio — there are so many places to easily plug in and journey live.”
