IBM paid $3.5 billion for Lotus again within the day. The massive pieces listed here are Lotus Notes, Domino and Portal. These Have been a substantial a share of IBM’s enterprise traffic for a long time, however ultimate yr huge Blue begun to tug away, promoting the progress half to HCL, while retaining maneuver of revenue and advertising.

This announcement marks the conclusion of the line for IBM involvement. With the progress of the platform out of its control, and in want of money after spending $34 billion for red Hat, perhaps IBM with no vicissitude determined it now not made feel to support any a share of this in-house.

As for HCL, it sees a chance to proceed to construct the Notes/Domino enterprise, and it’s seizing it with this purchase. “The massive-scale deployments of these items supply us with a noteworthy possibility to attain and serve hundreds of global businesses across a substantial range of industries and markets,” C Vijayakumar, president and CEO at HCL technologies, pointed out in a statement announcing the deal.

Alan Lepofsky, an analyst at Constellation research who continues shut watch on the traffic collaboration space, says the sale might signify a sparkling start for utility that IBM hasn’t basically been paying close consideration to for some time. “HCL is passage more drawn to Notes/Domino than IBM has been for a decade. they are investing heavily, making an attempt to rejuvenate the brand,” Lepofsky advised TechCrunch.

while this application may additionally consider lengthy in the enamel, Notes and Domino are nevertheless in expend in lots of corners of the business, and here's very factual in EMEA (Europe, middle East and Africa) and AP (Asia Pacific), Lepofsky pointed out.

He brought that IBM seems to subsist absolutely exiting the collaboration zone with this sale. “It appears that IBM is achieved with collaboration, out of the online game,” he mentioned.

This flux makes sense for IBM, which is relocating in a distinct course as it develops its cloud company. The red Hat acquisition in October, in specific, indicates that the enterprise desires to embrace private and hybrid cloud deployments, and older application relish Lotus Notes and Domino don’t in reality play a job in that world.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval approaches, is expected to shut in the middle of subsequent year.

The edge of a unique platform

The common Lotus, which IBM purchased in 1995, stumbled within the mid 80s partly because of its infirm aid for the brand unique Macintosh. The company then held a lock on the DOS spreadsheet market with Lotus 1-2-3, however its equal product for Apple's unique Mac, called Lotus Jazz, failed miserably in share as a result of its lack of following Apple's human interface guidelines. Jazz become additionally expensive, late, and buggy.

That misstep allowed Microsoft to enter the Mac spreadsheet market virtually unchallenged, and upward thrust from being a DOS license distributor into a unique role as a substantial computing device application developer with excel on the Macintosh. Microsoft later ported excel to the DOS pc the expend of its windows atmosphere, and instantly ate into Lotus' 1-2-3 sales.

Lotus eventually ported its 1-2-3 flagship to the Mac in 1991, but by then it was too late. After IBM bought the continues to subsist of Lotus four years later, the pair floundered for years within the desktop software market, with Lotus' SmartSuite continuously losing market share to Microsoft's workplace, in huge measure because of the fact that Microsoft could promote office licenses directly to computing device makers tied to its dominant windows platform.

IBM has for the reason that improved its Mac pilot application.

business a virtually untapped abilities for Apple

despite enthusiastic hobby in Macs from users and a strategic competitive pastime in home windows alternate options from Apple amongst executives, IBM at the minute has a extremely minuscule share (under 1%) of its international workforce using Macs. Many other companies similarly Have a minuscule symmetry of Macs in their installed base.

although, Apple's dynamic and sustained multiply in other markets, together with its schooling stronghold and the a proper deal simpler to enter purchaser market, are having an impact on adoption in the commercial enterprise. revenue of Apple's Mac computers Have sharply risen at a fee of between 30 and forty% year over 12 months (Mac market share), in an criterion workstation market it is barely growing to subsist by using three-4%.

A survey of 750 global IT administrators and C-level executives by using the yankee community discovered that almost 4 out of 5 groups —or about 80%—have at the least a few Macs and the Mac OS X working device establish in in their networks, and practically one-quarter referred to their enterprise had a "huge" number of Macs establish in in their community of greater than 30 to 50 contraptions.

IBM's iNotes is the newest illustration of how the iPhone is assisting to stoke pastime in Apple's hardware, software, and building tackle in the business. Working with the OSGi Console | killexams.com existent questions and Pass4sure dumps

This chapter is from the engage 

Before delving into the inner workings of the OSGi console, it is best to briefly clarify OSGi. OSGi stands for Open Services Gateway initiative framework. This framework allows software to subsist written and executed as independent components. In OSGi-speak, these components are referred to as bundles. OSGi is used in a wide range of applications, from client programs such as Eclipse and IBM Lotus Notes, to mobile phones, to server applications such as IBM Lotus Domino. As a result of their modular nature, OSGi bundles can subsist started, stopped, and debugged on an individual basis, without the need for stopping or restarting the entire platform. Both the Domino server and the Notes client expend Eclipse’s implementation of OSGi (Equinox) as their OSGi runtime platform.

OSGi was added to the Domino platform in release 8.5.2. As a result, in Domino 8.5.2, the XPages runtime was repackaged to sprint as OSGi bundles (instead of just a regular collection of Java JARS), also referred to as Eclipse plug-ins.

The OSGi console allows for the input of commands that the OSGi platform then performs. The platform posts the results of such commands back to the console. The OSGi platform itself has a whole host of commands that can simplify the troubleshooting of problems. The OSGi console can assist developers in developing XPages controls and applications, as well as assisting support personnel in diagnosing runtime issues. Developers who extend the XPages runtime by creating libraries will find the OSGi console commands to subsist a particularly powerful tool in analyzing problems. The OSGi console is of particular expend when the developer/administrator needs to know whether individual plug-ins (or sets of plug-ins) are loading correctly or which version of a plug-in is in use.

As mentioned earlier, OSGi is embedded within both the Notes client and the Domino server. Depending on where your XPages application is running (whether on the client or the server), your passage of accessing the OSGi console will vary. They start by explaining how to access the OSGi console on the Domino server.

OSGi is embedded within the HTTP job on the Domino server, as a result, the OSGi console is started automatically whenever the HTTP job is started. OSGi console commands are routed to the OSGi console via the HTTP task. That is, when entering an OSGi console command on the Domino server, the user must inform the HTTP job to route the specified command to the OSGi console—for example:

tell http osgi <<command>>

Here, <<command>> is the designation of the OSGi console command. Any OSGi command can subsist executed using the preceding syntax.

When it comes to OSGi commands, every developer and administrator should know several rudimentary commands. These commands can subsist your “go to” commands when problems arise—say, when you suspect bundle loading might subsist a factor. Even when you accomplish not consider that bundle loading is the problem, it is often best to first corroborate that the bundle is actually loaded before proceeding with other debugging techniques.

Table 3.2 lists some of the more commonly used OSGi commands that are available to expend for diagnosing plug-in issues on the Domino server (and also the Notes client). In Table 3.2, bundle-symbolic-name is referenced extensively. This is the designation by which the OSGi platform references bundles. bundle-symbolic-name correlates directly to the Bundle-SymbolicName manifest header, often referred to as the plug-in name.

Table 3.2. OSGi Console Commands

Command Syntax

Description

tell http osgi diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

Diagnoses the status of the bundle whose designation is provided. Determines whether the bundle is resolved and, if not, states why the bundle is not resolved.

tell http osgi ss <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the status of every bit of bundles in the system. Optionally, a symbolic designation or a symbolic designation prefix can subsist provided to obtain the status of a particular bundle or a subset of bundles.

tell http osgi start <bundle-symbolic-name>

Starts the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

tell http osgi discontinue <bundle-symbolic-name>

Stops the bundle with the specified symbolic name.

tell http osgi b <bundle-symbolic-name>

Prints metadata relating to the specified bundle.

tell http osgi headers <bundle-symbolic-name>

Lists the OSGi headers for the specified bundle.

tell http osgi help

Lists every bit of the OSGi command available on the server, along with some text describing each command.

All the commands listed in Table 3.2 can subsist entered via the Domino server console, with the results of such commands being printed back to the console, as illustrated in figure 3.4.

Figure 3.4

Figure 3.4. Running an OSGi command on the Domino Server Console

All the commands referenced in Table 3.2 can alternatively recall the bundle id as a parameter (instead of the bundle-symbolic-name). The bundle id is a numeric ID that the OSGi runtime assigns to the bundle during platform initialization. The ID might vary from instance to instance of the platform, but users might find it easier to input than having to enter the entire bundle symbolic name. Examples of how to determine and expend the bundle id are given later in this chapter.

Rarely does a solitary OSGi console command retort every bit of the questions on why a plug-in is not loading or operating as expected. The following sections clarify in greater detail how you can expend each of these commands and the results you can hope to view from executing such commands.

diag <bundle-symbolic-name>

This is one of the most valuable commands in your arsenal and will likely subsist the one you’ll expend most frequently when diagnosing issues. You can expend this command to determine whether a bundle is resolved within the OSGi platform. The status returned by this command will subsist one of the following:

  • No unresolved constraints
  • Unresolved constraint
  • If No unresolved constraints is the returned status, it suggests that the system has recognized the bundle and that every bit of dependencies of the bundle are satisfied. When an Unresolved constraint status is returned, it suggests that one or more bundles or packages that the bundle requires are missing or cannot subsist loaded. It is worth noting here that a bundle might soundless fail to start even though the OSGi console reports that the bundle has been resolved. If a bundle fails to start and is resolved, some code in the bundle’s activator likely is failing (throwing an exception).

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core

Listing 3.8 shows the typical output of running the diag command against the com.ibm.xsp.core plug-in.

Listing 3.8. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Successful Case > inform http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.core 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM initial@reference:file:../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp. core_8.5.3.20110629-1645/[119] 10/17/2011 09:43:14 PM No unresolved constraints.

In this case, the diag command reports that there were No unresolved constraints against the entered bundle symbolic name—in other words, the system recognizes the given bundle. Upon closer examination, the user can obtain further information about the bundle in question. It can determine where the bundle being used by the platform is installed, and the platform-assigned bundle id can also subsist obtained.

From reading the console output, the user can view that the bundle is installed to ../../shared/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.core_8.5.3.20110629-1645. The location specified is relative to the osgi/rcp/eclipse directory, which is a child of the Domino program directory. In this case, the console output indicates that the plug-in is installed at: <domino program directory>/osgi/shared/eclipse/plugins.

Finally, the output states the platform-assigned bundle id for the specified bundle. 119 is the id assigned to this bundle in this example. As stated previously, the OSGi commands listed here can expend the bundle id interchangeably. In this example, executing the following command has identical output to that in Listing 3.8.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi diag 119

Listing 3.9 shows sample output of running the diag command in an unsuccessful scenario.

Listing 3.9. Result of Running the diag Command Against a Specific Bundle—Error Case > inform http osgi diag com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM update@../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com. ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar [116] 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Direct constraints which are unresolved: 09/09/2011 04:05:51 PM Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0.

In Listing 3.9, you can view that the OSGi platform reports that the bundle in question is not resolved as a result of a missing dependency. They can view from the console output that the OSGi platform has actually organize the bundle that they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt), but as one of the bundles that com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt depends on is not resolved, the com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt bundle does not gain resolved itself. Looking a cramped more closely at the console output, they can determine the following:

The bundle com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt is installed at ../../../data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt_8.5.3.201108111413.jar. They now know that this path is relative to the <domino program directory>/osgi/rcp/eclipse directory. Hence, they can deduce that com.ibm.extlib.sbt is installed at the <domino program directory>/data/domino/workspace/applications/eclipse/plugins/ directory.

The OSGi platform–assigned bundle id for this bundle is 116.

One other tidbit of information can subsist extracted from the console output, in this case. The final line of the output tells us that the host is missing:

    Missing host com.ibm.xsp.extlib_0.0.0

This tells us that the bundle they are looking for (com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt) is, in fact, a plug-in fragment, and the unresolved constraint (com.ibm.xsp.extlib) is the host plug-in.

ss, ss <bundle-symbolic-name>, or ss <bundle-name-prefix>

Similar to the diag command, this command quickly determines the status of a particular bundle—or every bit of the bundles installed in the platform. Users can optionally specify a bundle designation or a bundle designation prefix to gain the status of specific bundles. The returned status shows the bundle id, state, and bundle designation of every bit of bundles. In many situations, this command is just as useful as the diag command because it also reports the status of a bundle. This command does not inform the user why a particular bundle is not loading, but it does inform the user the condition of a bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss

Listing 3.10 shows the result of running the ss command without any parameters.

Listing 3.10. Listing 3.10 lists a subset of the information that displays when this command is sprint in a established server environment. However, the listing does disclose every bit of the information needed to understand the output of the command.

The command outputs several distinguished pieces of information about each bundle:

  • Bundle-id—for example, 2, which is the OSGi platform–assigned ID of the bundle.
  • Bundle state—for example, RESOLVED, which is the condition of the bundle within the OSGi platform. A bundle can Have one of seven states. Table 3.3 explains every bit of of these.
  • Bundle name—for sample com.ibm.eclipse.equinox.preferences.nl_6.2.3.20110624-1648, which is the bundle symbolic designation with its version information appended to the name.
  • Master or Fragments—for example, Master=71. This data tells whether the bundle in question is a plug-in or a fragment. If the bundle specifies neither Master nor Fragments, it is automatically implied that the bundle is a plug-in bundle. The digits corresponding to the fragments or plug-ins are the OSGi platform–assigned bundle ids of the fragments or the master plug-in of the bundle in question.
  • Sample usage:

    tell http osgi ss com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.11 shows the result of running the ss command with a bundle prefix specified.

Similar to Listing 3.10, Listing 3.11 shows the results of executing the ss command, only this time the command is passed a bundle symbolic designation as a parameter. The ss command finds every bit of bundles on the system that either start with the parameter or Have a bundle symbolic designation that is the very as the parameter. Listing 3.11 lists every bit of the bundles, along with their bundle id and state.

Table 3.3 lists every bit of the workable states of an OSGi bundle.

    Table 3.3. OSGi Bundle States

    State

    Description

    UNINSTALLED

The bundle is uninstalled and is unusable.

    INSTALLED

The bundle has been installed, but the platform has not yet resolved it.

    RESOLVED

The bundle has been resolved and is in a position to subsist started.Note that it is soundless workable for the bundle to fail to start, even though it has been resolved by the environment.

    <<LAZY>>

Similar to RESOLVED, the platform has resolved the bundle and is in a position to subsist started. The bundle is not yet vigorous because it has been configured (via its bundle manifest) to subsist initialized lazily–that is, only when another vigorous bundle references the bundle will it subsist activated.

    STARTING

The bundle is in the process of starting. Either another bundle has specifically caused the bundle to start (by referring to a class within the bundle) or the user has manually started the bundle via the console. Rarely is a bundle in this condition because it is transient.

    STOPPING

The bundle is in the process of shutting down. Similar to STARTING, a bundle rarely is in this state.

    ACTIVE

The bundle is running within the OSGi platform.

Developers and administrators should subsist conscious that, on the Domino server, the condition of a bundle is not persisted from one session to the next—that is, after the HTTP job is restarted, any bundles that were started manually in the previous session must subsist started again. Luckily, the ss command has an controversy for filtering every bit of bundles in a given state. The ss command can filter the bundles based on their state, by appending -s [state] to the command syntax.

    Sample usage:

tell http osgi ss -s active

Figure 3.5 shows the output of running the ss command with the -s vigorous argument.

    Figure 3.5

Figure 3.5. Result of running the ss command in the Domino server console

    start <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command requests that the platform manually start the specified bundle. Calling this command does not guarantee that the specified bundle will subsist started. An exception can soundless occur during bundle initialization that would antecedent the bundle initialization to fail. Performing an ss command after the start command reports the status of the bundle. This command is helpful when a unique bundle has been installed on the server, but the administrator or developer is not in a position to restart the HTTP job to start the unique bundle.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi start com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.6 shows that, by running a combination of the ss and start commands, a bundle can subsist started and its condition can subsist verified.

    Figure 3.6

Figure 3.6. Result of running the start and ss commands in the console

    stop <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command tells the platform to discontinue the specified bundle. Users should subsist observant when calling this on a production environment. In some cases, it might not subsist workable for the platform to discontinue the bundle. If this is the case, the reason will subsist printed to the console.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi discontinue com.ibm.xsp.extlib.sbt

Figure 3.7 shows how running a combination of the ss and discontinue command stops a bundle and verifies its state.

    Figure 3.7

Figure 3.7. Result of running the start and ss commands in the console

    b <bundle-symbolic-name>

This command prints every bit of metadata relating to the specified bundle. The metadata includes imported packages, required bundles, exported packages, bundle location, and so on. This command is useful when the developer needs to quickly verify that the bundle loaded by the platform has the meta information that the developer believes it has.

    Sample usage:

    tell http osgi b com.ibm.xsp.extlib

Listing 3.12 shows a subset of the output from running the b command against a specified bundle.

The Direct Stock Market uses Lotus Notes for E-commerce | killexams.com existent questions and Pass4sure dumps

    In-Depth

The Direct Stock Market uses Lotus Notes for E-commerce
  • By Jason J. Meserve
  • 07/23/2001
  • When it comes to the World-Wide Web, updating content is key to getting customers to return. But updating static pages with data from disparate sources, converting to HTML and posting online can subsist a daunting and repetitive task.

The Direct Stock Market of Santa Monica, Calif., faced this problem daily. Their site -- www.direct-stock-market.com -- advertises minuscule companies seeking investors for an initial public offering of stock. Stock offering announcements, company information and financials data for each company is accessible via the 'Net so prospective investors can view where their money will subsist invested.

"These smaller companies [which don't qualify for the Nasdaq minuscule Capital market] don't Have access to money used to raise capital," explained Kevin McCall, marketing coordinator for The Direct Stock Market. "We expend the Internet as an avenue to gain investors; that is much more cost efficient."

Inefficient was the process of keeping listed company information up-to-date: Companies who wanted to subsist listed or needed to update information had to transmit the proper data on a disk to The Direct Stock Market's Web person. The data on the disk, such as a word processing document or spreadsheet, had to subsist converted to HTML using editors or hand-coding, then placed online. Eight to nine static HTML pages had to subsist created or changed for each company listing. Information listed on the Web sites was also duplicated in an IBM Lotus Notes database, which the company had been using for years, accessible only from within The Direct Stock Market network via a Notes client.

In May of this year, The Direct Stock Market used Lotus' Domino to integrate the two data-entry processes into a solitary process that cuts out the Web programmer middleman and gives listed companies direct access to their own information using Netscape Navigator 3.0 from Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, Calif. Now companies can enter data directly into the Domino database and Have it appear on the The Direct Stock Market's site almost instantaneously.

"We've eliminated the duplication of creating, E-mailing and us putting the information up," said Cynthia Copsey, The Direct Stock Market's vice president of marketing. "It saves time and lets their customers' information subsist establish directly into their travail flow."

Fuel Creative, an Internet-based software developer and Web design solid also located in Santa Monica, designed the Domino back discontinuance and created what it calls an Intranet/Internet Application (Web site) Editor through Netscape. Brian Holmes and Michelangelo Capraro, Fuel's founders, built the site in approximately three-and-a-half months after extensive planning involving The Direct Stock Market.

"We talked to The Direct Stock Market a lot, getting background and opinions on their current site, then finding out how they would relish to view it improved," said Capraro.

Based on the talks with The Direct Stock Market, Fuel created a system where corporate information pages are dynamically generated out of the Domino database. However, Domino-generated pages are typically bland and sterile-looking, according to Capraro and Holmes. One of the hurdles Fuel faced was making the information the user sees in their browser more eye-pleasing.

Using Lotus Script, JavaScript and Shockwave Director, a multimedia plug-in for Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer from San Francisco-based Macromedia Inc., Fuel created agents that intercept the data coming out of the Domino server and reformat the data based on specific "preference pages" before the user sees the information appear in their browser. This passage allows The Direct Stock Market to change the determine of their site by modifying just the preferences page, rather than hundreds of individual pages.

"Our unique site is so much more user-friendly and navigable," said Copsey. She added that since companies enter their information themselves, it gives them a sense of ownership when they establish things on The Direct Stock Market site.

Currently, The Direct Stock Market and Fuel are working on upgrades and improvements to the site. Internal users at The Direct Stock Market must soundless expend a Notes client to accomplish much of the database administration. Fuel is working on a Web-based desktop that will let internal users modify and administer the site with only Navigator.

"With only one tool required to administer the site, a unique person [starting at The Direct Stock Market] only needs to learn how to click on "Netscape" to administer the site [rather than learning Notes]," said Fuel's Holmes. "We're pushing the limits of Notes with this technology."

The Direct Stock Market is also planning to build a "trading floor" on its site that will enable investors to trade these minuscule companies online. Copsey said the proposed trading floor is awaiting the approval of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Security Bytes: Mytob variants on the march | killexams.com existent questions and Pass4sure dumps

Mytob worm keeps multiplyingAntivirus firms convey the Mytob worm is multiplying at a dizzying pace with no discontinuance in sight. By Wednesday morning Symantec was reporting the appearance of Mytob-AV@mm and Mytob-AU@mm and its ThreatCon was at plane 2.

Russian-based Kaspersky Lab had its threat plane at yellow -- indicating a medium threat -- partly because of Mytob's spread. The original worm was first detected Feb. 26, Kaspersky said on its Web site, adding, "According to their detections, there are now 25 versions of the worm, with six unique versions being detected between [April 9 and 11]." The lab said the worm has been at the top of its virus stats, accounting for about 30% of every bit of mail traffic. "Additionally, six or seven other variants from the Mytob family are present in their Virus Top 20, showing that these worms Have [been] propagating steadily, intensifying the outbreak," the solid said.

Kaspersky said the outbreak could subsist made worse by Microsoft's latest security update, which listed several unique critical vulnerabilities. Eugene Kaspersky, head of AV research at the lab, said in a statement, "We're confident that the computer underground is working actively on creating unique and even more perilous malicious code [that] will exploit these loopholes. To support your data safe, they strongly recommend that you download and install the latest Microsoft patches now."

Kaspersky said Mytob is a modification of the Mydoom source code, but the author has added network worm functionality. This means the worm can propagate via Microsoft's LSASS vulnerability. It also has a bot role that lets a remote malicious user control infected computers through Internet Relay Chat [IRC] channels and freely access files on affected machines.

IBM fixes Lotus Notes/Domino flawsIBM has fixed several flaws in its Lotus Notes and Domino products. Danish security solid Secunia said the security holes are "highly critical" and that users should update to the 6.5.4 or 6.0.5 releases of Lotus Notes and Domino. The solid said the specific problems are:

  • A border error within the Domino server during the processing of confident time and date fields that can subsist updated from the Internet. Attackers can expend this to antecedent a buffer overflow by passing a specially crafted POST request. IBM said this could crash the Domino server.
  • A format string error in the Domino server when handling authentication using the NRPC Notes protocol. IBM said this could also subsist exploited to crash the Domino server.
  • An unspecified border error in notes.ini on a Lotus Notes client attackers can exploit to antecedent a buffer overflow.
  • An error in the @SetHTTPHeader role attackers can exploit to inject malicious content into the header and potentially conduct HTTP response splitting attacks or proxy cache poisoning.
  • The first problem was reported by vestige Litchfield of NGSSoftware. The second and third flaws were discovered by Ollie Whitehouse at Symantec. Researcher Juan Calderon reported the fourth issue. The Secunia advisory links to the various bulletins from IBM and NGS Software.

COAST collapsesThe COAST antispyware consortium died this week after a member exodus left it on life support. According to the Register, Computer Associates, Alluria and Webroot left in February, epigram COAST appeared unable to develop efficient antispyware standards. The icing on the cake came when a controversial member, 180solutions, joined the group. CA and McAfee both described 180solutions as adware, though the company claimed to subsist "a provider of search marketing solutions," the Register said. Either way, that point is now moot for the consortium.

Veritas patches flawSurrey, U.K.-based NGSSoftware reported a critical flaw in the Veritas i3 Focalpoint Server, which is bundled with other servers such as Indepth for Oracle. Versions 7.1 and earlier are vulnerable to the flaw. Veritas has released a patch and describes it as "enhancing the i3 Listener agent to support the installation of the Siebel AppTier with Interpoint/Oracle on the i3 server." The company recommends patching the servers that Have Indepth for Oracle Collector agents installed.

Sun fixes flaws in Java serversSun Microsystems has fixed flaws in the Java System Web Server and Java System Directory Server attackers could exploit to antecedent a denial of service.

The first problem is an unspecified vulnerability affecting Sun Java System Web Server 6.0 Service Pack 7 and earlier on Windows platforms. Sun said the issue has been fixed in version 6.0 Service Pack 8 and later. The second problem is that a local or remote unprivileged user could launch malicious commands and antecedent a denial of service by exploiting a vulnerability in Java System Directory Server 5.0.

At issue is a lack of bounds checking in some implementations of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) -- used to access network-based directories -- may allow a buffer used to generate error messages to overflow. "If a remote unauthenticated attacker supplies a LDAP server with a specially crafted request, they may subsist able to trigger the buffer overflow to compromise the vulnerable server," Sun said.

The advisory outlines steps for patching this problem.

PHP updated to fix flawsPHP has released updated versions of its software to amend multiple medium-risk vulnerabilities reported by David Litchfield of NGSSoftware in Surrey, U.K. Versions affected comprise PHP 5.0.3 and PHP 4.3.10. NGSSoftware is withholding details of the flaws for three months to allow users to apply the patches.
