IBM is banking on Lotus Domino's collaborative aid to aid fend off Microsoft change. for his or her part, Domino/Notes administrators are enthusiastic about the Lotus Sametime and QuickPlace collaborative apps, however a few of them are biding their time about upgrading to new releases of Lotus's products.
"Microsoft trade is doing phenomenally neatly. How can IBM respond? one in every its suggestions is to broaden the category to involve collaboration, as well," followed Jasmine Noel, who heads up trade analyst enterprise J Noel pals.
QuickPlace 3.0, the latest free up of Lotus's rapid messaging software, presents multiplied integration with Lotus's Sametime collaborative application. cease clients can now birth a Sametime chat from inside QuickPlace, as an instance, and descry which different users are on-line, observed Tim Kounadis, senior market manager for IBM Lotus utility.
In Sametime 3.0, additionally accessible now, IBM planned so as to add steer for a SIM gateway, aimed at at ease communications throughout supported Sametime communities. Late in the progress cycle, notwithstanding, this characteristic turned into pulled from three.0, in choose of inserting it in a future Sametime liberate as a substitute.
Microsoft network (MSN) and the usa online (AOL) are additionally contemplating aid for the rising SIP/elementary protocol, Kounadis cited. other new collaborative and administrative features, although, did develop it into Sametime three.0.
Many clients are satisfied, anywayMany clients emerge jubilant with Sametime and QuickTime without further enhancements, anyway. At Ryder programs Inc., as an example, QuickPlace and Sametime are helping a Notes-primarily based expertise portal from a third-birthday celebration utility company.
"We're the usage of QuickPlace quickly messaging as a replacement for some of their mobilephone calls. earlier than calling americans, they ping them first to develop confident they are obtainable. This helps us to crop down on telephone tag," according to Dave Baildon, Ryder's neighborhood director of product and abilities management.
Sametime comes into play at Ryder for collaborative conferences around topics starting from fiscal budgets to truck dispatch schedules. "We furthermore consume Sametime to locate people who're expertise consultants in particular areas," Baildon added.
meanwhile, Lotus has additionally launched the first version of LearningSpace - digital lecture room, a "collaborative gaining knowledge of environment" for on-line steer in realtime. virtual school margin builds on capabilities already existing in Sametime and previous versions of LearningSpace, in keeping with Susan Lawler, international offerings manager for IBM Mindspan solutions.
Lotus has been beta trying out the brand new versions of its collaborative utility among users that involve Daimler-Chrysler and CUNA, for instance.
"we've got gone live with virtual school margin a few times. or not it's really making a difference, as a result of they can present two sorts of curriculum and grasp breakout organizations for every," referred to Marlo Foltz, supervisor of eSchool production at CUNA. CUNA has experimented with a reside polling feature, too.
now not every and sundry, besides the fact that children, has been willing to labor with beta utility. Ryder, a QuickPlace/Sametime person on account that the 12 months 2000, is interested in some of the different new points in QuickPlace and Sametime, in line with Baildon.
"We contain not gotten to 3.0 yet, notwithstanding. They don't conclude betas. it really is just their policy, as a result of they should not contain the time. as soon as the new software is accessible and approved, they will explore at various it in a nonproduction environment. they will bang on it until we're certain we're getting the most profitable out of it, and then they are going to acclimate (our users) to it," he talked about.
meanwhile, facilitites administration outsourcer Unicco, a former cc:Mail client, is now using Notes, Quickplace, and Domino.doc to help build a collection of built-in portals for exterior users, clients and personnel. Unicco's future plans require the consume of Sametime meetings to assist crop down on worker trip prices, stated Jeff Peterson, Unicco's VP of know-how.
IBM, although, is running into new competition recently within the collaborative area, as smartly. Documentum, for instance, currently purchased eRoom. "however IBM isn't pretty much as worried about corporations relish this than about Microsoft," Joel mentioned.
a further IBM strategy, of path, is to spot Notes/Domino as an improved administrative ambiance than alternate. for example, Lotus Domino/Notes 6.0, additionally launched this month, provides capabilities starting from consumer interface enhancements to built-in spam filtering and more advantageous help for server consolidation, Kounadis pointed out.
"Many Notes four.6 customers who did not upgrade to release 5.0 are planning to upgrade to free up 6.0," he contended.
Having it each methods?different analysts, too, contain pointed to IBM's tenor to pitch Lotus's products in each collaborative and administrative directions. "IBM has a finished product household that relates intently to and integrates with the messaging/collaboration of Lotus Domino/Notes. It includes Lotus QuickPlace (a crew collaborative software); Sametime (a real-time conferencing, rapid messaging, and online presence cognizance application); Discovery device (a search and retrieval server); Domino.Doc (a document management customer utility), Domino trade Integration connectors, and Everyplace ( a cell access server)," in keeping with a fresh document from IDC.
"IBM should be addressing IT administration requirements with the next version of Domino, (6.0), that (are) expected to encompass superior performance (replication, customer/server interactions, community compression); coverage-based administration, facts monitoring, roaming person support, ASP administration and configuration, and centralized directory," IDC referred to.
With QuickPlace and Sametime 3.0, as smartly as the new LearningSpace - virtual school room, IBM seems to be rolling these two ideas collectively. Even in 2.0, some users are finding QuickPlace to be a extra cozy IM environment than other alternatives.
"Lotus gives you security at the application, content material, and community layers. QuickPlace is encrypted end-to-conclusion," maintained Ryder programs' Baildon.
without protections relish these, IM may furthermore be "like having a enterprise assembly on the street -- and this simply isn't applicable to a lot of businesses," Joel accompanied.
Uncontrolled IM site visitors can additionally tie up bandwidth on costly WAN links, according to Joel. "but when chat expertise may furthermore be comfy - if administrators can handle the course it flows throughout the network - then it may be capable for primetime as a trade device, and here is what IBM is making an attempt to bring."
The newest editions of IBM's collaborative apps are naturally succeeding at retaining some valued clientele in the Domino/Notes fold. Ryder became a long-time Notes store anyway, however the transportation enterprise became to an outside consultant a few years ago for help in identifying even if to consume QuickPlace/Sametime or a 3rd-birthday celebration vendor to meet its "company wants" for collaboration and messaging.
"it be their realizing that IBM has sped up performance in three.0. this will help us lots, mainly with clients who are dialing in through modem," Baildon spoke of.
"Sametime can contain new rig for measuring who's the usage of it, and how an imperfect lot. QuickPlace will start letting you support song of which QuickPlace businesses you might be in. prior to now, they contain been counting on spreadsheets to conclude this."
SIP Connector and Crossplatform ConsiderationsTo secure essentially the most out of Sametime, QuickPlace and virtual school room, directors requisite to be watchful of the ins-and-outs of these products, of course. Even when Sametime does add SIP assist, as an example, you're going to nonetheless deserve to learn how to set up a part upcoming product from Lotus, confidential as the SIP Connector.
Lotus's collaborative purposes require consume of a Domino server. Domino offers greater crossplatform help on the server aspect than the collaborative apps. on the other hand, practically every of Lotus' products present you more multiplatform operability than Microsoft does.
Let's grasp Sametime, as an example. Sametime is a consumer-server utility for collaborative activities reminiscent of chat, monitor sharing, shared whiteboarding, meetings, and audio/video streaming. The Sametime server operates best on windows 2000, windows NT, and IBM iSeries and pSeries servers. that you can configure the Sametime server as both a Domino or an LDAP server, although.
Domino, however, is already obtainable for windows 2000, NT, IBM AIX edition four.three.3x and 5.1, solar Solaris 2.8/SPARC; crimson Hat 7.2 and SuSE eight.0 Linux, operating on Intel; and IBM iSeries and zSeries servers. The IBM iSeries and zSeries aid multiple instances of Domino.
Which customer does what? The Lotus Notes customer runs on windows and Mac machines. Sametime, however, works with no longer just Notes shoppers but 5 different customer applications:
Sametime connect customer;
Sametime meeting margin customer;
Sametime Broadcast customer
H.323-compliant valued clientele reminiscent of Microsoft NetMeeting.
What's extra, Sametime's six client applications each contain part sets of capabilities. The Sametime connect customer is a windows app which contains a "presence listing" displaying which clients are online. In distinction, Sametime meeting margin customer is a Java applet which runs on the person's browser every through "rapid" and "scheduled" meetings.
The meeting margin and Broadcast customers each play a job every over proclaims of streaming media content material. The presenter makes consume of the meeting margin customer, whereas the viewers-participants consume the view-only, noninteractive BroadCast client.
To complicate matters a bit extra, the Notes customer can furthermore be used for having access to a Sametime dialogue or TeamRoom database, but not for gaining access to the Sametime server domestic web page or Sametime assembly middle on the internet. These pages will furthermore be used from a web browser best.
Authentication, Encryption and Password AdministrationSametime three.0 helps authentication through each Domino SSO and secrets and techniques and Tokens databases. really, the Sametime three.0 server is deploy to help secrets and techniques and Tokens by default. Future editions of Sametime, besides the fact that children, will consume handiest SSO for authentication, based on Lotus's Sametime three.0 Administrator's e-book. if you're using a 3rd-party product such as Netegrity SiteMinder which depends on Domino web server API (DSAPI) filters, develop confident to be certain that Sametime three.0 is set to steer secrets and techniques and Tokens.
Chat recreation between the Sametime three.0 server and Sametime three.0 and a pair of.5 shoppers is always encrypted. if you are the consume of Sametime purchasers lessen than version 2.5, though, you'll greater tarry on top of things.
These earlier versions enable cease clients to determine to conduct unencrypted chats, even when the consume of a Sametime 3.0 server.
a different option is to encrypt every T.120 screen-sharing, whiteboarding and audio/video records that passing between the assembly margin and Broadcast customer.
you can store time on password administration via enabling automatic login for "Sametime join for browsers." To conclude so, stagger to the Configuration - neighborhood services option" of the Sametime Administration device. Then, choose "allow join clients to retailer their person name, password and proxy suggestions" from the checkbox.
however, in cases requiring taut security, you may develop a conclusion to drive users to specify a "assembly password" that might be decent for that certain meeting handiest.
Sametime 3.0 gives you a lot of other security of administration facets, together with charts, logging tools, and plenty of administrative controls. presented in the course of the Sametime Administration instrument in 3.0, the charts are for monitoring free disk belt on the server, net facts, assembly capabilities, broadcast features, audio/video functions, and community functions.
Separate tools are inbuilt for Sametime logging and Domino logging. that you may additionally stipulate which actions will be logged, and no matter if activities may be logged to a database or to text data.
Ironing out the quirks?Lotus' items allow for a lot of flexibility on both the collaborative and administrative sides. nonetheless, although, administrators contain encountered some system defects in Sametime, QuickPlace, and digital classroom, in addition to in Notes. In beta trying out, IM hasn't every the time panned out neatly, based on CUNA's Foltz. Foltz, youngsters, blames the issues on practicing concerns. "a few of their users contain under no circumstances executed immediate messaging before," she mentioned.
For its part, Ryder has arrive throughout difficulties with each whiteboarding and "working offline" capabilities.
"We regularly secure oversight messages after they are attempting to synchronize - and in whiteboarding, every now and then it works better to connect the presentation to the whiteboard as a (Microsoft) PowerPoint file," Baildon referred to . in the unlock Notes for Sametime 3.0, Lotus says the whiteboard can be saved in either of two codecs: wealthy textual content layout (RFT) or Sametime Whiteboard (SWB).
"We're hoping that Lotus has ironed out these little quirks of 2.0," based on Ryder's Baildon.
The sky's the limit?meanwhile, IBM has large ambitions for future development. In subsequent versions of the digital lecture margin product, Lotus is expected so as to add more capabilities in the areas of each administration and "blended getting to know," or integration with different kinds of digital and school margin media.
sooner or later, Lotus will construct an infrastructure for "tying (virtual lecture room) into lower back conclusion programs and launching differerent applications," Lawler predicted.
Lotus is additionally eyeing the probability of bringing together Sametime and QuickPlace into a solitary product, Kounadis admitted. both utility choices are already being bought facet-by means of-side in some product bundling offers.
IBM Corp.’s Lotus utility group on Tuesday formally took the wraps off of the long-awaited free up 6 (R6) of its Notes and Domino messaging and collaboration items. The primary enhancements to Notes/Domino on the grounds that Lotus closing refreshed the items virtually three years in the past contain efforts directed at decreasing total cost of possession (TCO).
Alan Lepofsky, choices manager for Lotus application, touts Domino R6’s stronger steer for server consolidation, together with its new tools for coverage-based administration, as purely two of the ideas in which Lotus proposes to crop back Domino’s complete pervade of ownership.
To facilitate migrations from current Domino R5 systems, Lotus will assist for the primary time in Domino R6 edition coexistence amongst part releases of Domino, Lepofsky confirms.
in accordance with James Kobielus, a senior analyst with consultancy Burton group, each Lotus and Microsoft contain struggled to inspire clients to better to new models of their messaging and collaboration products.
“Most agencies contain a massive investment in both Domino or alternate, and they want to tarry with these items and slowly or systematically migrate or enhance those items … they don’t upgrade in lockstep with a vendor’s new announcement,” he comments, speculating that it took approximately two years for even a quarter of Notes/Domino R4 users to upgrade to R5: “I doubt that perhaps greater than 1 / 4 of exchange 5.5 [shops] contain upgraded to trade 2000 by means of now, both.”
because of Notes’ new compression capabilities, Lepofsky argues, IT environments can crop back Notes-to-Domino-related site visitors on their networks by 35 to 50 percent. Compression furthermore consequences in a reduction of Domino server-to-server network traffic of 25 to 30 %. This has the added benefit of assisting purchasers to consolidate Domino servers, Lepofsky argues.
“The amount of users they can secure on to a given desktop has been dramatically more advantageous on account of issues relish [network compression],” he says.
moreover, Lepofsky concludes, Domino’s shared-nothing clustering capabilities – which develop it viable to fail-over from one server to one more across a wide-area network – continue to be unmatched by using its closest competitor, Microsoft Corp.
“in the Domino atmosphere, clustering is the true failover and fault recuperation of an entire server,” he asserts, stressing that Lotus can additionally support failover between heterogeneous working programs. “we will cluster an AS/four hundred and a Linux container, and failover [from the one to the other].” Domino additionally runs on windows servers.
Lotus is furthermore incorporating assist for spam blacklisting into Domino R6. What this ability, says Burton group’s Kobielus, is that Domino may be capable of reject e-mail site visitors despatched from the domains or IP handle stages of established SPAMmers. as soon as once more, he notes, Lotus is forward of Microsoft, which has promised to interpolate equivalent anti-spam amenities in its coming near near Titanium and Kodiak models of trade – but hasn’t yet provided specifics. Microsoft is expected to supply more aspect about its plans at the Microsoft alternate convention subsequent week in Anaheim, Calif.
“[Lotus] has a lead privilege here on Microsoft within the sense that Domino R6 is now shipping, however don’t neglect that Microsoft has promised to convey anti-spam aspects in Titanium, too,” he says.
Revamped Collaboration tools
Lotus furthermore used the event of its Domino R6 announcement to unveil updates for its SameTime and QuickPlace collaborative products, as smartly.
Lotus up-to-date its SameTime instant messaging (IM) and collaboration product to version three.0. new in the SameTime three.0 IM Gateway is assist for the Session Initiation Protocol for immediate Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (primary) protocol, which, Lepofsky says, enables SameTime to interoperate with different IM products that steer the fundamental usual.
This means that users of Microsoft Corp.’s windows XP client ambiance – which ships with an easy-enabled IM client, MSN Messenger – can develop the most touchstone capabilities in Lotus SameTime 3.0 which are at the moment unavailable to them in Microsoft’s change 2000 messaging and collaboration server.
“Microsoft had the first essential-enabled client product in the marketplace with windows XP, however alas, Microsoft had no longer implemented that [SIMPLE] stack below change or beneath its MSN Messenger service,” says Burton neighborhood’s Kobielus.
in other places on the collaboration entrance, Lotus’ revamped QuickPlace 3 will ship with a Java- and XML-primarily based API that now makes it feasible to embed crew collaboration capabilities in web applications.
New Pricing model
beginning in January, Lotus will originate pricing Domino on a per-CPU groundwork. For the moment, Domino R6 can be accessible for $894 per server -- $2,308 per server for Domino utility Server. each would require a Notes or iNotes client entry license (CAL) for clients, Lepofsky acknowledges. Lotus furthermore markets a Domino Utility Server which, despite a cost of a whopping $eleven,750 per CPU, doesn’t require CALs. Lotus’ SameTime and QuickPlace collaborative apps are priced on a per-user groundwork at $38 and $39, respectively.
in line with Marcel Nienhuis, a market analyst with messaging consultancy Radicati community, Lotus at present boasts a lower initial acquisition pervade than its closest competitor, Microsoft exchange. while he received’t speculate as to how Lotus’ revamped pricing model will contain an impact on its TCO, Nienhuis does witness that both messaging systems will continue to be “neck-and-neck” in terms of charge.
“We did a TCO examine closing yr, and they contain Lotus a little bit cheaper than Microsoft on the acquisition can charge, nevertheless it’s furthermore extra costly to maneuver Lotus than it's to manage Microsoft. Over a three yr length, they institute that the TCO change between them both turned into $three.”
Radicati estimates that mutually, Lotus and Microsoft control 80-85 p.c of the messaging market. As of its ultimate count, Nienhuis confirms, Radicati discovered that Microsoft had surpassed Lotus in the complete number of customer licenses.
“the brand new unencumber of Lotus might probably exchange issues or shift issues in wish of Notes, but as of now, we've Microsoft ahead by course of just a few million [seats],” he confirms.

Stephen Swoyer is a Nashville, TN-primarily based freelance journalist who writes about technology.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Warning letters in hand, Zach Rybarczyk patrolled the food court at Union Station, trying to find offenders.
past Auntie Anne's, previous Johnny Rockets. At Lotus specific, a chinese food joint, Rybarczyk peeled the wrapper from a pink straw and bent the conclusion — the telltale giveaway.
Washington has become the newest metropolis in a nationwide flux to ban plastic straws, and or not it's up to Rybarczyk, an inspector for the D.C. department of power and ambiance, to enforce the new legislations.
The straw cop left the rattled cashier at Lotus specific with a warning that if the store changed into noiseless using plastic straws with the aid of July, when a grace duration expires, it can be fined as much as $800.
9 years after the District instituted a nickel tax on plastic baggage and three years after it banned plastic foam meals containers, it has became on plastic straws — the latest target of environmentalists making an attempt to in the reduction of hundreds of thousands of hundreds plastic that leads to timber, waterways and within the bellies of natural world. the hassle has been galvanized by course of a viral video of a sea turtle with a straw caught in its nostril.
"it be pretty absurd the amount of components they build into growing plastic materials that they are using for 5 minutes to an hour, and then certainly not once more," stated Julie Lawson, director of D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser's office of the clear city. "Single-use plastics are taking the equal cultural belt as tobacco the spot or not it's socially unacceptable."
Straws and the District contain an extended heritage; the modern ingesting straw become born in Washington in 1888, when inventor Marvin Chester Stone received the first patent for an "synthetic straw" made from paper and produced them in his manufacturing facility on F highway NW.
Over the subsequent century, the straw developed from straight to bendable, from paper to plastic.
however the popularity of the plastic straw, and its requisite of aptitude to decompose, is proving to be its undoing.
city officers evaluate that plastic straws develop up less than 1 p.c of the trash within the Anacostia and Potomac rivers. still, they pose a problem. Their thin design makes them too little for many recycling machinery, so that they arrive to be in trash and in the cease in waterways. Volunteers accrued 10,000 plastic straws every over the thirtieth annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup in April.
"Plastic toxins that finally ends up at streetlevel is carried with the aid of rain water into storm drains and at eventual into streams and rivers," Laura Cattell Noll of the Alice Ferguson groundwork, a local environmental group, advised the D.C. Council. "in many cases, this storm water is untreated, leaving aboriginal waterways jam-packed with plastic luggage, Styrofoam, plastic bottles and plastic straws."
The plastics trade has been pushing for decreased consume instead of a ban.
"We conclude not suppose the ban is the remedy approach since it finally ends up substituting one cloth for a further," observed Keith Christman, managing director of plastics markets for the American Chemistry Council, which represents plastics producers. "What they requisite to conclude here is crop back fritter and never grasp a straw should you conclude not want one."
The District is among at the least 15 jurisdictions which contain outlawed plastic straws, including Seattle, Monmouth beach, N.J., and a string of coastal cities in southern Florida and California, including San Francisco. There are no statewide bans, youngsters California requires restaurants to serve straws handiest at shoppers' request. An expanding variety of firms, together with Starbucks, Marriott and American airways, are voluntarily phasing out plastic straws.
the effort in the District has been pushed alongside by Dan Simons, co-owner of the Farmers Restaurant neighborhood.
Simons not ever stocked plastic straws at his seven restaurants, including the flagship Founding Farmers in Foggy bottom, preferring bioplastic straws that are hypothetical to decompose.
however when he caught a bioplastic straw in a container of salt water for six months and it didn't change, he was convinced that they, too, contain drawbacks.
remaining spring, Simons formed Their final Straw, a coalition of D.C.-area eating places, bars, motels, event venues and groups to lobby for an cease to single-use plastic straws. He mentioned it become exceptionally convenient to influence others to be fragment of.
"when you are in fact getting into discussions with individuals on this theme and you analyze pictures and movies about the volume of trash within the ocean, this is simply so logical and evident that human habits must exchange," Simons mentioned.
He argued that the delivered pervade of alternate options to plastic could be offset if restaurants consume much less.
"in case you disburse twice as a lot but consume half as many, the math is pretty basic," Simons talked about.
At Union Station during the first week of January, when the ban took impact, many eating spots on the leading degree had already switched to compostable straws. however within the basement meals court docket, Rybarczyk drew antiseptic stares from cashiers who had no theory in regards to the ban.
At Lotus categorical, the inspector, considered one of three dispatched with the aid of the city to assess cafeterias, bars and restaurants, scribbled the restaurant's identify on the paper sleeve of the plastic straw and tucked it into his back pocket, along with two others from scofflaw eating places. He planned to later check whether they floated in water, yet another telltale badge of prohibited plastic.
"absolutely there should be some holdouts except July, once they beginning issuing fines. nonetheless it's most reasonable to give businesses a heads up," observed Rybarczyk, who maintains a metal straw for his very own consume in his backpack.
At Sakura Japan, Rybarczyk defined the new guidelines to a cashier as a man anticipating his lunch appeared on in disgust.
"What, is this California now?" grumbled the client, who declined to give his identify. "All these legal guidelines are only spreading from California. everything is getting taken far from us, man. here is so dull."
In 2014, D.C. lawmakers banned disposable food provider items that can not be recycled or composted, however the city's department of energy and environment released assistance maxim plastic straws contain been consummate to develop consume of.
D.C. Council individuals Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward three) and Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) sought to apposite that closing 12 months with the aid of explicitly outlawing plastic straws, but the Bowser administration beat them to the punch, including plastic straws and stirrers to the record of banned food containers and utensils that includes plastic foam bins and foil-lined deli paper.
Bars and meals firms within the nation's capital were replacing plastic with straws crafted from paper, hay, bamboo or cornstarch.
"actually, they haven't heard one criticism," talked about Kathy Hollinger, who leads the Restaurant association of Metropolitan Washington. "Our individuals will inform us pretty immediately if there's a ample upshot on their bottom line, and they contain not heard that with this situation."
At Blue Bottle espresso in Union Station, manager Derek Henry certain Rybarczyk that the support has been the consume of straws manufactured from vegetable fabric for four years.
"each product they supply a visitor is compostable. it be been one among their core values," Henry mentioned, besides the fact that children he acknowledged the straws become in the trash as a result of Union Station does not present composting.
company is booming for producers of straws made from eco-friendly alternate options to plastic.
Orders contain gone up so a august deal for Indiana-primarily based Aardvark Straws — which has made paper straws for greater than a decade — that there's a six-to-eight-week backlog, and the company obligatory to open a brand new manufacturing facility.
As long island city considers a plastic-straw ban, Aardvark Straws wishes it to hold off unless 2020.
"All these bans simply began hitting at once," pointed out David Rhodes, world company director for Aardvark. "The final aspect they want to conclude is delivery a circulation and be equipped that they can not meet the demand."
One challenge dealing with D.C. restaurants, bars and low retail outlets: What to conclude with outlawed plastic straws?
On the primary day the law took impact, a Starbucks shop downtown threw away ample baggage filled with straws, a circulate that looked as if it would subjugate the goal of the ban.
The D.C. fork of energy and environment advises corporations to retain a little inventory of plastic straws for purchasers with disabilities who want them, while returning the leisure to a corporation or sending them to agencies in Maryland or Virginia.
The rigor got here up in Seattle when activists heralded a restaurant that voluntarily ditched plastic straws before the ban took upshot — only to recognize that restaurant simply gave the straws to a bar throughout the street.
"It become a reminder to us to not consume them every up and not just toss them out," mentioned Dune Ives, the Seattle-based executive director of Lonely Whale, a nonprofit devoted to doing away with plastic straws. "If they are going to conclude the very best job they are able to, they ought to secure these straws out of the fritter move."
Ives has been collecting straws from organizations and has thousands piling up in her basement. She plans to ship them to a Netherlands company that makes furniture out of plastic.
within the District, Simons wants Their closing Straw to act as a repository for plastic straws from different agencies. He hopes to crop a grasp supervision of a recycling facility to accept a huge shipment of straws without delay, heading off the problems of skinny ones being misplaced in device throughout cloth sorting.
"I definitely don't wish to descry them stagger in the trash," Simons observed.
Some conservatives and restaurant-goers snort or not it's heavy-handed to target plastic straws when they don't appear to be a leading supply of pollution.

IBM is banking on Lotus Domino's collaborative support to help fend off Microsoft Exchange. For their part, Domino/Notes administrators are enthusiastic about the Lotus Sametime and QuickPlace collaborative apps, but some of them are biding their time about upgrading to new releases of Lotus's products.
"Microsoft Exchange is doing phenomenally well. How can IBM respond? One of its strategies is to broaden the category to involve collaboration, as well," observed Jasmine Noel, who heads up industry analyst firm J Noel Associates.
QuickPlace 3.0, the latest release of Lotus's instant messaging software, offers increased integration with Lotus's Sametime collaborative software. cease users can now start a Sametime chat from within QuickPlace, for instance, and descry which other users are online, said Tim Kounadis, senior market manager for IBM Lotus Software.
In Sametime 3.0, furthermore available now, IBM planned to add support for a SIM gateway, aimed at secure communications across supported Sametime communities. Late in the progress cycle, though, this feature was pulled from 3.0, in favor of putting it in a future Sametime release instead.
Microsoft Network (MSN) and America Online (AOL) are furthermore contemplating support for the emerging SIP/SIMPLE protocol, Kounadis pointed out. Other new collaborative and administrative features, though, did develop it into Sametime 3.0.
Many users are happy, anywayMany users appear jubilant with Sametime and QuickTime without further enhancements, anyway. At Ryder Systems Inc., for example, QuickPlace and Sametime are supporting a Notes-based knowledge portal from a third-party software provider.
"We're using QuickPlace instant messaging as a replacement for some of their phone calls. Before calling people, they ping them first to develop confident they're available. This helps us to crop down on phone tag," according to Dave Baildon, Ryder's group director of product and knowledge management.
Sametime comes into play at Ryder for collaborative meetings around topics ranging from fiscal budgets to truck dispatch schedules. "We furthermore consume Sametime to find people who are knowledge experts in particular areas," Baildon added.
Meanwhile, Lotus has furthermore launched the first edition of LearningSpace - Virtual Classroom, a "collaborative learning environment" for online instruction in realtime. Virtual Classroom builds on capabilities already present in Sametime and earlier editions of LearningSpace, according to Susan Lawler, global offerings manager for IBM Mindspan Solutions.
Lotus has been beta testing the new editions of its collaborative software among users that involve Daimler-Chrysler and CUNA, for example.
"We've gone live with Virtual Classroom a yoke of times. It's really making a difference, because they can present two types of curriculum and hold breakout groups for each," said Marlo Foltz, manager of eSchool production at CUNA. CUNA has experimented with a live polling function, too.
Not everyone, however, has been willing to labor with beta software. Ryder, a QuickPlace/Sametime user since the year 2000, is interested in some of the other new features in QuickPlace and Sametime, according to Baildon.
"We haven't gotten to 3.0 yet, though. They don't conclude betas. That's just their policy, because they don't contain the time. Once the new software is out there and approved, we'll test it in a nonproduction environment. We'll bang on it till we're confident we're getting the best out of it, and then we'll acclimate (our users) to it," he said.
Meanwhile, facilitites management outsourcer Unicco, a former cc:Mail customer, is now using Notes, Quickplace, and Domino.doc to help build a sequence of integrated portals for external users, customers and employees. Unicco's future plans convoke for using Sametime meetings to help crop down on employee travel costs, said Jeff Peterson, Unicco's VP of technology.
IBM, however, is running into new competition lately in the collaborative space, as well. Documentum, for instance, recently purchased eRoom. "But IBM isn't nearly as concerned about companies relish this than about Microsoft," Joel pointed out.
Another IBM strategy, of course, is to position Notes/Domino as a better administrative environment than Exchange. For example, Lotus Domino/Notes 6.0, furthermore released this month, adds capabilities ranging from user interface enhancements to built-in spam filtering and better support for server consolidation, Kounadis said.
"Many Notes 4.6 customers who didn't upgrade to Release 5.0 are planning to upgrade to Release 6.0," he contended.
Having it both ways?Other analysts, too, contain pointed to IBM's tenor to pitch Lotus's products in both collaborative and administrative directions. "IBM has a comprehensive product family that relates closely to and integrates with the messaging/collaboration of Lotus Domino/Notes. It includes Lotus QuickPlace (a team collaborative application); Sametime (a real-time conferencing, instant messaging, and online presence awareness application); Discovery System (a search and retrieval server); Domino.Doc (a document management client application), Domino Enterprise Integration connectors, and Everyplace ( a mobile access server)," according to a recent report from IDC.
"IBM will be addressing IT administration requirements with the next version of Domino, (6.0), that (are) expected to involve enhanced performance (replication, client/server interactions, network compression); policy-based management, statistics monitoring, roaming user support, ASP administration and configuration, and centralized directory," IDC noted.
With QuickPlace and Sametime 3.0, as well as the new LearningSpace - Virtual Classroom, IBM appears to be rolling these two strategies together. Even in 2.0, some users are finding QuickPlace to be a more secure IM environment than other alternatives.
"Lotus gives you security at the application, content, and network layers. QuickPlace is encrypted end-to-end," maintained Ryder Systems' Baildon.
Without protections relish these, IM can be "like having a trade meeting in the street -- and this just isn't acceptable to a lot of companies," Joel observed.
Uncontrolled IM traffic can furthermore tie up bandwidth on expensive WAN links, according to Joel. "But if chat technology can be secure - if administrators can control how it flows through the network - then it will be ready for primetime as a trade tool, and this is what IBM is trying to deliver."
The latest editions of IBM's collaborative apps are clearly succeeding at keeping some customers in the Domino/Notes fold. Ryder was a long-time Notes shop anyway, but the transportation firm turned to an outside consultant a yoke of years ago for help in deciding whether to consume QuickPlace/Sametime or a third-party vendor to meet its "business needs" for collaboration and messaging.
"It's their understanding that IBM has sped up performance in 3.0. This will help us a lot, especially with users who are dialing in by modem," Baildon said.
"Sametime will contain new tools for measuring who's using it, and how much. QuickPlace will start letting you support track of which QuickPlace groups you're in. Up to now, we've been relying on spreadsheets to conclude this."
SIP Connector and Crossplatform ConsiderationsTo secure the most out of Sametime, QuickPlace and Virtual Classroom, administrators requisite to know the ins-and-outs of these products, of course. Even when Sametime does add SIP support, for instance, you'll noiseless requisite to learn how to install a part upcoming product from Lotus, known as the SIP Connector.
Lotus's collaborative applications require consume of a Domino server. Domino provides greater crossplatform support on the server side than the collaborative apps. On the other hand, virtually every of Lotus' products give you more multiplatform operability than Microsoft does.
Let's grasp Sametime, for example. Sametime is a client-server application for collaborative activities such as chat, screen sharing, shared whiteboarding, meetings, and audio/video streaming. The Sametime server operates only on Windows 2000, Windows NT, and IBM iSeries and pSeries servers. You can configure the Sametime server as either a Domino or an LDAP server, though.
Domino, on the other hand, is already available for Windows 2000, NT, IBM AIX Version 4.3.3x and 5.1, Sun Solaris 2.8/SPARC; Red Hat 7.2 and SuSE 8.0 Linux, running on Intel; and IBM iSeries and zSeries servers. The IBM iSeries and zSeries support multiple instances of Domino.
Which client does what? The Lotus Notes client runs on Windows and Mac machines. Sametime, however, works with not just Notes clients but five other client applications:
Sametime Connect client;
Sametime Meeting margin client;
Sametime Broadcast client
H.323-compliant clients such as Microsoft NetMeeting.
What's more, Sametime's six client applications each contain different sets of capabilities. The Sametime Connect client is a Windows app which contains a "presence list" showing which users are online. In contrast, Sametime Meeting margin client is a Java applet which runs on the user's browser during "instant" and "scheduled" meetings.
The Meeting margin and Broadcast clients each play a role during broadcasts of streaming media content. The presenter uses the Meeting margin client, whereas the audience-members consume the view-only, noninteractive BroadCast client.
To complicate matters a bit more, the Notes client can be used for accessing a Sametime Discussion or TeamRoom database, but not for accessing the Sametime server home page or Sametime Meeting seat on the Web. These pages can be used from a Web browser only.
Authentication, Encryption and Password AdministrationSametime 3.0 supports authentication through both Domino SSO and Secrets and Tokens databases. In fact, the Sametime 3.0 server is set up to support Secrets and Tokens by default. Future editions of Sametime, however, will consume only SSO for authentication, according to Lotus's Sametime 3.0 Administrator's Guide. If you're using a third-party product such as Netegrity SiteMinder which relies on Domino Web server API (DSAPI) filters, you should develop confident that Sametime 3.0 is set to support Secrets and Tokens.
Chat activity between the Sametime 3.0 server and Sametime 3.0 and 2.5 clients is always encrypted. If you're using Sametime clients lower than version 2.5, though, you'd better tarry on top of things.
These earlier versions allow cease users to determine to conduct unencrypted chats, even when using a Sametime 3.0 server.
Another option is to encrypt every T.120 screen-sharing, whiteboarding and audio/video data that passing between the Meeting margin and Broadcast client.
You can redeem time on password administration by enabling automatic login for "Sametime Connect for browsers." To conclude so, stagger to the Configuration - Community Services option" of the Sametime Administration Tool. Then, select "Allow Connect users to redeem their user name, password and proxy information" from the checkbox.
Alternatively, in situations requiring taut security, you might determine to force users to specify a "meeting password" that will be salubrious for that particular meeting only.
Sametime 3.0 gives you a lot of other security of management features, including charts, logging tools, and a variety of administrative controls. Supplied through the Sametime Administration instrument in 3.0, the charts are for monitoring free disk space on the server, Web statistics, meeting services, broadcast services, audio/video services, and community services.
Separate tools are built in for Sametime logging and Domino logging. You can furthermore stipulate which activities will be logged, and whether activities will be logged to a database or to text files.
Ironing out the quirks?Lotus' products allow for a lot of flexibility on both the collaborative and administrative sides. Still, though, administrators contain encountered some glitches in Sametime, QuickPlace, and Virtual Classroom, as well as in Notes. In beta testing, IM hasn't always panned out well, according to CUNA's Foltz. Foltz, however, blames the problems on training issues. "Some of their users contain never done instant messaging before," she acknowledged.
For its part, Ryder has arrive across difficulties with both whiteboarding and "working offline" functions.
"We often secure oversight messages when they try to synchronize - and in whiteboarding, sometimes it works better to attach the presentation to the whiteboard as a (Microsoft) PowerPoint file," Baildon said . In the Release Notes for Sametime 3.0, Lotus says the whiteboard can be saved in either of two formats: moneyed Text Format (RFT) or Sametime Whiteboard (SWB).
"We're hoping that Lotus has ironed out these little quirks of 2.0," according to Ryder's Baildon.
The sky's the limit?Meanwhile, IBM has ample ambitions for future development. In subsequent editions of the Virtual Classroom product, Lotus is expected to add more capabilities in the areas of both administration and "blended learning," or integration with other sorts of electronic and classroom media.
Ultimately, Lotus will build an infrastructure for "tying (Virtual Classroom) into back cease systems and launching differerent applications," Lawler predicted.
Lotus is furthermore eyeing the possibility of bringing together Sametime and QuickPlace into a solitary product, Kounadis admitted. The two software offerings are already being sold side-by-side in some product bundling deals.
IBM Corp.’s Lotus Software Group on Tuesday officially took the wraps off of the long-awaited Release 6 (R6) of its Notes and Domino messaging and collaboration products. The major enhancements to Notes/Domino since Lotus eventual refreshed the products almost three years ago involve efforts directed at reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).
Alan Lepofsky, offerings manager for Lotus software, touts Domino R6’s enhanced support for server consolidation, along with its new tools for policy-based administration, as merely two of the strategies by which Lotus proposes to reduce Domino’s total cost of ownership.
To facilitate migrations from existing Domino R5 systems, Lotus will support for the first time in Domino R6 version coexistence among different releases of Domino, Lepofsky confirms.
According to James Kobielus, a senior analyst with consultancy Burton Group, both Lotus and Microsoft contain struggled to inspirit users to upgrade to new versions of their messaging and collaboration products.
“Most companies contain a massive investment in either Domino or Exchange, and they want to tarry with those products and slowly or systematically migrate or enhance those products … they don’t upgrade in lockstep with a vendor’s new announcement,” he comments, speculating that it took approximately two years for even a quarter of Notes/Domino R4 users to upgrade to R5: “I doubt that maybe more than a quarter of Exchange 5.5 [shops] contain upgraded to Exchange 2000 by now, either.”
As a result of Notes’ new compression capabilities, Lepofsky argues, IT environments can reduce Notes-to-Domino-related traffic on their networks by 35 to 50 percent. Compression furthermore results in a reduction of Domino server-to-server network traffic of 25 to 30 percent. This has the added benefit of helping customers to consolidate Domino servers, Lepofsky argues.
“The amount of users they can secure on to a given machine has been dramatically improved because of things relish [network compression],” he says.
In addition, Lepofsky concludes, Domino’s shared-nothing clustering capabilities – which develop it possible to fail-over from one server to another across a wide-area network – remain unmatched by its closest competitor, Microsoft Corp.
“In the Domino environment, clustering is the remedy failover and fault recovery of an entire server,” he asserts, stressing that Lotus can furthermore support failover between heterogeneous operating systems. “We can cluster an AS/400 and a Linux box, and failover [from the one to the other].” Domino furthermore runs on Windows servers.
Lotus is furthermore incorporating support for SPAM blacklisting into Domino R6. What this means, says Burton Group’s Kobielus, is that Domino will be able to reject e-mail traffic sent from the domains or IP address ranges of known SPAMmers. Once again, he notes, Lotus is ahead of Microsoft, which has promised to interpolate similar anti-SPAM facilities in its forthcoming Titanium and Kodiak versions of Exchange – but hasn’t yet provided specifics. Microsoft is expected to provide more detail about its plans at the Microsoft Exchange Conference next week in Anaheim, Calif.
“[Lotus] has a lead here on Microsoft in the sense that Domino R6 is now shipping, but don’t forget that Microsoft has promised to deliver anti-SPAM features in Titanium, too,” he says.
Revamped Collaboration Tools
Lotus furthermore used the occasion of its Domino R6 announcement to unveil updates for its SameTime and QuickPlace collaborative products, as well.
Lotus updated its SameTime instant messaging (IM) and collaboration product to version 3.0. new in the SameTime 3.0 IM Gateway is support for the Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE) protocol, which, Lepofsky says, makes it possible for SameTime to interoperate with other IM products that support the SIMPLE standard.
This means that users of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows XP client environment – which ships with a SIMPLE-enabled IM client, MSN Messenger – can exploit SIMPLE capabilities in Lotus SameTime 3.0 that are currently unavailable to them in Microsoft’s Exchange 2000 messaging and collaboration server.
“Microsoft had the first SIMPLE-enabled client product on the market with Windows XP, but unfortunately, Microsoft had not implemented that [SIMPLE] stack under Exchange or under its MSN Messenger service,” says Burton Group’s Kobielus.
Elsewhere on the collaboration front, Lotus’ revamped QuickPlace 3 will ship with a Java- and XML-based API that now makes it possible to embed team collaboration capabilities in Web applications.
New Pricing Model
Starting in January, Lotus will originate pricing Domino on a per-CPU basis. For the moment, Domino R6 will be available for $894 per server -- $2,308 per server for Domino Application Server. Both will require a Notes or iNotes client access license (CAL) for users, Lepofsky acknowledges. Lotus furthermore markets a Domino Utility Server which, despite a cost of a whopping $11,750 per CPU, doesn’t require CALs. Lotus’ SameTime and QuickPlace collaborative apps are priced on a per-user basis at $38 and $39, respectively.
According to Marcel Nienhuis, a market analyst with messaging consultancy Radicati Group, Lotus currently boasts a lower initial acquisition cost than its closest competitor, Microsoft Exchange. While he won’t speculate as to how Lotus’ revamped pricing model will impact its TCO, Nienhuis does witness that the two messaging platforms will continue to be “neck-and-neck” in terms of cost.
“We did a TCO study eventual year, and they contain Lotus a little bit cheaper than Microsoft on the acquisition cost, but it’s furthermore more costly to manage Lotus than it is to manage Microsoft. Over a three year period, they institute that the TCO disagreement between them both was $3.”
Radicati estimates that collectively, Lotus and Microsoft control 80-85 percent of the messaging market. As of its eventual count, Nienhuis confirms, Radicati institute that Microsoft had surpassed Lotus in the total number of client licenses.
“The new release of Lotus might maybe change things or shift things in favor of Notes, but as of now, they contain Microsoft ahead by a few million [seats],” he confirms.

LONDON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - The Haas Formula One team transformed their brokendown grey livery into a slick black and gold explore at a launch on Thursday while a new, if little-known, energy drink title sponsor talked about taking on Red Bull.
The U.S.-owned outfit contain signed a deal with British-based moneyed Energy, a startup depicted by entrepreneur front man William Storey as a David ready to grasp on the Goliath of the industry.
“We are looking forward to taking on Red Bull, on and off the track,” said Storey after the covers came off the team’s rebranded car in the august foyer of London’s exclusive Royal Automobile Club.
“I’m complete of admiration for Red Bull, they’re a very salubrious business, but they feel we’ve got a compelling proposition, a better brand.

Team principal Guenther Steiner said Ferrari-powered Haas, fifth of 10 teams eventual year, were a salubrious apt as relative newcomers furthermore “trying to grasp on the ample boys”.

Haas entered the sport in 2016 and contain yet to score a podium finish. No fiscal figures contain been given for the moneyed partnership.
The new livery revived memories of now-defunct Lotus teams that furthermore raced in black and gold.
Haas’s experienced French driver Romain Grosjean, who raced and stood on the podium for the most recent Lotus team, welcomed the new paint job.
“I cherish those colours, they are very iconic in motorsport,” he told Reuters.
“Let’s hope we’re not bankrupt when they stand on the podium,” he joked. “That was an gripping time... I deem with Haas and moneyed Energy we’re in a different league in that aspect.”
Rich Energy tried to buy force India, to some scepticism from F1 insiders, when that team went into administration eventual year and were furthermore in talks with struggling former champions Williams.
If cans of the drink contain been hard to find, Storey shrugged off those who questioned the company’s fundamentals. He said moneyed had a presence in 43 countries and had recently sold 90 million cans.
“For a drink that (supposedly) doesn’t exist, that’s quite an gripping statistic,” he said.
The bearded businessman said David Sullivan, the billionaire co-owner of Premier League club West Ham United, was one of seven backers but in a personal capacity.
He said the involvement in Formula One was a long-term project with significant expenditure and institutional investors.
“David Sullivan is a shareholder of the business,” he said. “But in terms of the people that we’ve got behind us, one of the conditions really is that they wanted a bit of anonymity. I built this, I’m sort of the pan of the business.” (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Christian Radnedge)
