Big Blue previewed its plans to bring both IBM i and AIX to the IBM Cloud at its annual believe conference in Las Vegas, on scale out machines aimed at wee and medium businesses as well as to customers who want to elope clusters of machines, and on scale up systems that maintain NUMA electronics that more tightly cluster them into shared memory systems.

The Power Systems slices served up on the IBM Cloud running IBM i and AIX were first rolled out for early access to selected customers to test the APIs for the control plane, which they assume is based on the PowerVC implementation of OpenStack. The initial customers who are kicking the tires were putative to only deploy evolution and test environments or protype code, certainly not anything running in production. The alpha and beta testing for the Power Systems slices on the IBM Cloud is on a pretty mercurial track, running from February into March, as you can see, and generic availability is slated for some time in March. External storage for applications and databases is on Storwize V7000 disk arrays in the racks near this Power iron, and are linked to the servers by Fibre Channel switches. Customers can participate machines or rent dedicated iron, depending on their proclivities for absolute security and dealing with Noisy neighbors on the virtual infrastructure.
Steve Sibley vice president and offering manager for the Cognitive Systems division at IBM, gave me a sneak peek at the future Power cloud slices on a visit to the Austin, Texas labs terminal week, ahead of the believe conference. Here is how the features and functions of the logical partitions on the IBM Cloud are shaping up:
Sibley told us that the pricing was not yet set in stone for the virtual Power capacity on the IBM Cloud, but when pressed about comparing the cost between buying gear and renting it on the cloud, Sibley estimated that for a given IBM i or AIX workload running on similarly configured hardware and logical partitions, running the cloud instance would cost about 30 percent to 40 percent more on the instance running full out over three years compared to buying the iron and using it for three years. The difference, of course, is that IBM is managing the Power Systems and paying for the datacenter, the electricity, the cooling, the security, patch updates on firmware, the installation of the PowerVM hypervisor and its update, and the installation of the IBM i or AIX operating system. When companies buy their own Power Systems machines, unless they rate augmented services from IBM or a business partner, it’s every bit of on them. Pricing for the virtual machines, the memory, the storage, and the operating system and databases are every bit of set per hour.
By the way, it is not lucid what IBM i and AIX releases are supported on the machines, but presumably the current IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3 releases are supported on the IBM Cloud as well as AIX 7.1 and AIX 7.2, which are likewise current. Linux is not mentioned as a supported platform, but SAP HANA workloads are and that implies that there is a Linux – and specifically Red Hat Enterprise Linux – underneath it since HANA in-memory databases are not supported on any Unix variant, or IBM i for that matter.

In the 1990s and well into the 2000s, if you had mission-critical applications that required zero downtime, resiliency, failover and high performance, but didn’t want a mainframe, Unix was your go-to solution.
If your database, ERP, HR, payroll, accounting, and other line-of-business apps weren’t elope on a mainframe, chances are they ran on Unix systems from four dominant vendors: Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM and SGI. Each had its own flavor of Unix and its own custom RISC processor. Servers running an x86 chip were at best used for file and print or maybe low-end departmental servers.
Today it’s a x86 and Linux world, with some Windows Server presence. Virtually every supercomputer on the Top 500 list runs some flavor of Linux and an x86 processor. SGI is long gone. Sun lived on for a while through Oracle, but in 2018 Oracle finally gave up. HP Enterprise only ships a few Unix servers a year, primarily as upgrades to existing customers with obsolete systems. Only IBM is noiseless in the game, delivering unusual systems and advances in its AIX operating system.
We aren’t going to dwell on how they got here. Instead, this is a behold at where commercial Unix is going, and how and when it will eventually die. (Note: We're specifically talking about the decline of commercial Unix. noiseless flourishing are the free and open-source variants such as FreeBSD, which was born out of the Berkeley Software evolution (BSD) project at the University of California, Berkeley, and GNU.)
Unix's gradual decline
Unix’s decline is “more of an artifact of the need of marketing appeal than it is the need of any presence,” says Joshua Greenbaum, principal analyst with Enterprise Applications Consulting. “No one markets Unix any more, it’s kindhearted of a extinct term. It’s noiseless around, it’s just not built around anyone’s strategy for high-end innovation. There is no future, and it’s not because there’s anything innately wrong with it, it’s just that anything innovative is going to the cloud.”
“The UNIX market is in inexorable decline,” says Daniel Bowers, research director for infrastructure and operations at Gartner. “Only 1 in 85 servers deployed this year uses Solaris, HP-UX, or AIX. Most applications on Unix that can breathe easily ported to Linux or Windows maintain actually already been moved.”
Most of what remains on Unix today are customized, mission-critical workloads in fields such as pecuniary services and healthcare. Because those apps are expensive and risky to migrate or rewrite, Bowers expects a long-tail decline in Unix that might terminal 20 years. “As a viable operating system, it’s got at least 10 years because there’s this long tail. Even 20 years from now, people will noiseless want to elope it,” he says.
Gartner tracks the decline of unusual Unix sales.
Gartner doesn’t track install base, just unusual sales, and the trend is down. In Q1 of 2014, Unix sales totaled $1.6 billion. By Q1 of 2018, sales were at $593 million. In terms of units, Unix sales are low, but they are almost always in the configuration of high-end, heavily decked-out servers that are much larger than your typical two-socket x86 server.

It’s remarkable how tight-lipped people are over the state of Unix. Oracle and HPE declined to comment, as did several IBM customers. IBM is noiseless in the game, but Bowers notes, “I view IBM investing $34 billion in Red Hat, but I don’t view IBM investing $34 billion in AIX.”
Steve Sibley, vice president of cognitive systems offerings at IBM, acknowledges the obvious but says IBM will noiseless maintain a substantial number of clients on AIX in ten years, with the majority of clients being big Fortune 500 clients. He adds that there will likewise breathe a stable number of midrange customers in some ways “because they don’t want to expend the investment to rate off AIX.”

So don’t believe for a minute that IBM is not going to eventually add back for Linux on this public Power infrastructure that it is rolling out. To breathe honest, it is a bit of a wonder that it is not happening concurrent with the rollout of AIX and IBM i on the cloud.
IBM has been providing hosting and outsourcing services for rent for six decades now, so it is a bit much to muster it a newcomer to selling cloudy infrastructure. The company has dabbled with selling capacity with utility pricing before. recollect the total Supercomputing On-Demand application back in January 2003? This included clusters of systems – people called them grids back then – based on both X86 and Power architectures, with capacity rented, not bought, and it preceded the launch of Amazon Web Services by more than three years. But it is unprejudiced to bid that substantial Blue did not respond quickly enough to build its own public cloud – neither did other system makers and outsourcers, to breathe unprejudiced – and that is why to rate back in the game it had to expend around $2 billion to acquire SoftLayer, a hosting provider that moved into virtualized and bare metal clouds that had amassed 25,000 customers and a fleet of over 100,000 servers in 13 datacenters when IBM bought it back in June 2013.
SoftLayer had built its own cloud controller and used the commercial XenServer hypervisor from Citrix Systems to chop up Supermicro servers into virtual slices. IBM sold off its System x X86-based server business to Lenovo a year later for $2.3 billion, so there was no reason to chase SoftLayer, now known as the IBM Cloud over to System x gear. And the Lenovo cash paid back most of the SoftLayer bill. IBM invested another $1.2 billion in SoftLayer birthright after the deal was done, and had hoped to build out 40 cloudy datacenters, with hundreds of thousands of machines and millions of virtual machines. They attain not know if IBM met these goals, and it doesn’t talk about them anymore in this way.
It took a surprisingly long time for IBM to rate Power-based machines on its public cloud, and it is lucid in hindsight that substantial Blue was waiting until its Power8 servers were fully ramped and it came up with a more cogent Linux strategy on Power Systems machines to really push Power architectures from the SoftLayer cloud, which it launched in May 2016. The four bare metal instances that debuted then based on its Power Systems LC machines are noiseless available today, based on the very single-socket “Habanero” system created by Tyan, with slightly different prices and with the very configurations that were available nearly three years ago. These Power Systems LC machines back Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Canonical Ubuntu Server operating systems and the PowerKVM hypervisor, but only Ubuntu Server was available on the cloudy versions on what is now known as the IBM Cloud. The Power instances are available in IBM Cloud datacenters in San Jose, Dallas, Washington DC, Sao Paulo, London, and Sydney.
IBM has not, as yet, offered cloudy instances of machines running AIX and IBM i, and it has similarly not offered bigger iron – both of which it sorely needed to attain to actually offer potential customers the very class of machines on the cloud as they maintain used in their datacenters.
With today’s launch, IBM is getting a bit closer, but it is a minute disconcerting that IBM Cloud is only offering SAP HANA in-memory databases atop Linux for running S/4 HANA applications on four-socket and eight-socket “Haswell” Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800 servers. IBM’s enterprise-class Power E950 and Power E980 machines, which expend Power9 processors and which scale to four or sixteen sockets, respectively, can elope circles around this obsolete Haswell iron. IBM’s Global Technology Services does plenty of outsourcing deals on such iron for running SAP HANA, which is a huge driver of the Power Systems business these days, but that is not the very thing as having remedy utility pricing. (We will rate into SAP HANA on Power in a divorce article, because IBM has some unique advantages that it is leveraging well here, and it is taking on Hewlett Packard Enterprise for the mantle in this enterprise arena.) Customers who need a larger memory footprint – they can double or quadruple this – can pay an incremental charge and IBM will load up some Power S922 machines with more capacity. The Power S922 servers are configured with disk and shimmer storage, and the instances can maintain anywhere from 10 GB to 2 TB of capacity on either, sold in 10 GB chunks.
IBM is likewise selling slices on a Power E880 servers based on Power8 chips and is planning on adding slices on Power E980 machines that are based on Power9 processors. Both machines scale from four to sixteen sockets, and in the case of the Power E880, IBM has set up systems that expend the ten-core Power8 chip that spins at 4.19 GHz to deliver systems that scale up to 160 cores in a unique system image. The memory and storage on this cloudy Power E880 scales the very as on the Power S922, with 8 GB to 64 GB per core for memory and up to 2 TB of disk and/or shimmer storage scalable in 10 GB increments.
Both types of Power Systems on the IBM Cloud are back-ended by capacity on IBM’s Storwize V7000 disk arrays, which link to the servers over Fibre Channel links. IBM installs the PowerVM hypervisor and either AIX or IBM i (and presumably Linux in the case of SAP HANA) and then customers maintain everything from the operating system and on up from there while IBM manages from the firmware on down.
Here is the set of features that IBM is rolling out for these Power instances:
IBM has been beta testing this cloudy Power infrastructure in its Washington DC data center since the middle of January. By March, IBM will maintain machines up and running in its Dallas datacenter as well and it will allow production workloads to produce expend of them. Somewhere in the second quarter it will roll out Power System slices in its Frankfurt datacenter in Germany, with other geographies to follow. So how will customers expend this cloudy Power iron? “I believe initially people will start by testing out their evolution and test environments and view if it can elope out here,” says Sibley. “I likewise believe they will view people using the cloud for cataclysm recovery for Power Systems, because while companies believe it is alright to own one datacenter, they don’t want to own two. And there is likewise a line of business angle, too. They maintain one customer that is starting a unusual business, and they want to start it out on the cloud on Power, and maybe some day they will chase it back to their datacenter and maybe they will withhold it there on the cloud.”
